Guy Contact is the alias of Perth-based producer and rising star Callum Chute.  Specialising in his own contemporary brand of hardware-focused progressive house, Guy Contact has been hard at work refining his sound since his EP ‘Liminal Space’ dropped on Butter Sessions nearing the end of 2019. The result is a unique and unquestionably cohesive sound palette of pulsating grooves, trance-like overtones and blissful pads - all wrapped up and raring to energise any dancefloor. Following a run of stand out 12” EPs on the likes of Coymix Ltd, Haws Music and Craigie Knowes, Guy Contact is also plotting a follow up release on Butter Sessions due by the end of the year. With quality output to boot in 2021, Guy Contact is commanding the attention of local and global audiences - evidenced also by recent and inspiring contributions to both esteemed Amsterdam based Oddysee mix series and home grown stalwart series Melbourne Deepcast. Awesome mix I acquired at uni, just identified with help from Chris Weir (big up): 'At the last ever Sabresonic in Dec 95, Andrew gave out tapes (hence the caption on the tape “game over”) that were recorded on previous Sabresonic nights'. Game Over Tape 1 is a downtempo selection from Andrew - classic US hip-hop instrumentals, obscure bugged-out beats, crazy samples and general weirdness. I've had a go at a tracklisting below, please leave a comment if you can fill a blank.

The Godson, Rick Wilhite, is at the controls for FACT mix 198.

As proprietor of the legendary Vibes store in Detroit, which closed in 2008, and as a DJ and producer, Wilhite has become a world-renowned purveyor of soulful electronic music. A core member of the Three Chairs production team that also numbers Theo Parrish, Kenny Dixon Jr. and latterly Marcellus Pittmann, he’s released a number of highly sought-after solo records, including a trio of KDJ 12″s that were virtually impossible to get hold of until Rush Hour began reissuing them last year.

Rick has put together his FACT mix to celebrate the release of Vibes New &amp; Rare Music. This Rush Hour compilation is available as a single CD or spread across four 12″s, and is comprised entirely of new and exclusive tracks from Chicago and Detroit. Many of the names involved will be familiar to you – the likes of Theo, Pittman Kyle Hall, Urban Tribe, Glenn Underground and Wilhite himself (as The Godson) all contribute – but arguably the real booty is the material from less familiar faces, among them Ricardo Miranda, Derwyn Hall and Marc King.

FACT mix 198 - Rick Wilhite (Nov '10)

This Friday’s mix celebrates some of the earlier work of Cleveland techno legend Dan Curtin. Herein you shall find a glorious selection of melodic, acidic electronica and tech house, rich with his complex, layered sound. I discovered Dan’s 1994 masterpiece The Silicon Dawn in the late 90s, and although I loved it dearly from the off, never really dug into his wonderfully diverse back catalogue to the extent that his talent warrants. Well, that’s all changed now :)

The tracklist on this mix is shorter than usual and with good reason. These tunes really deserve a chance to breathe, jam-packed as they are with ideas - you get three tracks’ worth of melodies, acidic riffs and bleeps in one. In a few cases it was hard to cut a tune even after 5 minutes, knowing yet another earworm was just around the corner. 

I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did compiling and making it - if you do, and weren’t overly familiar with Dan Curtin before, I strongly recommend picking up The Silicon Dawn for starters, it’s an absolute classic.
