Our artist led Hospital Mixtape series continues! Over the years, S.P.Y has become one of the most well-respected producers and DJs in the game with an astute ear for the crispest, deepest and darkest drum & bass.

S.P.Y’s sets are consistently crammed with the highest quality selections, which hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2015 he was chosen to present the prestigious BBC Radio 1 Essential mix for Pete Tong and subsequently joined Annie Mac at her BBC Radio 1 stage at Glastonbury Festival.

A DJ in high demand, S.P.Y has spent the last year touring the globe from USA to Canada, Australia to New Zealand. Last summer he took to the stage at Bestival, Sun & Bass, EDC and Tomorrow World! He’s given a helping hand to brother Unreal featuring on his fire-fuelled track ‘Enduro’ and a got his head down to produce a Jungle VIP of BCee’s – ‘Back To The Street’.

S.P.Y’s been in hot demand for his remixing skills in the past year with his (Not So Glittery) Sigma remix hitting the BBC Radio 1Xtra playlist for a huge six weeks running. He’s done it again with four fresh reworks of: TC – ‘Rep’ ft Jakes, London Elektricity – ‘Why Are We Here?’, Fred V & Grafix – ‘Ultraviolet’ and and Digital – ‘Deadline’. For the first time ever, the International Library of African Music has been made available for artists to remix. Originally recorded by ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey, 35,000 recordings were made across Africa between the 1920s and '70s. That alone was a staggering cultural achievement and, in tribute to Tracey's work and that of the artists he recorded, a raft of producers and artists have been brought in to reimagine the work for the Beating Heart - Malawi album (due June 3). Money raised from the project will go directly to helping the communities where the original recordings were made. Rudimental, Clap! Clap!, Kidnap Kid, Machinedrum, Luke Vibert and Throwing Shade have all contributed efforts but it was this version from My Nu Leng that piqued our interest. Taking an uplifting vocal chant, the duo build a devastating assault of low-end stabs and popping drums that explode violently across the track with each iteration. If you've ever caught My Nu Leng live, imagine that energy distilled into four minutes and 19 seconds.

Through its 10-year history, Skankandbass has been dedicated to the official promotion of drum & bass, and providing a platform for up-and-coming talent.  It was through the launch of its record label that they took it to the next level, and since its first release in late 2015, Skankandbass Records has provided an exposure platform that is second to none for some of the scene’s most exciting newcomer producers.

To see the successes of the label alumni, you need not look any further than the tracklist of SNB50.  Skankandbass’ most ambitious release yet, the various artists EP features the reworking of five of the most distinct cuts from the label’s short history. 

Recent Metalheadz signee Grey Code’s excellent track ‘Veilig’ is given a hypnotic rework by Data 3, while Mitekiss (fresh off the release of his debut LP on Hospital) is remixed by Shogun residents Deadline. Critical signee Cruk, the extremely talented Klinical, and Particle (whose Original Nuttah bootleg tore through the scene last year) round off the release, all with stellar efforts. 

Releasing on Friday 19th April 2019, SNB050 is a testament to the incredible talent which Skankandbass has always attempted to shine a light on, and will be celebrated with a takeover of room three of the iconic fabric London on the same night of release.
