Music for Interference Patterns (2014)

Day 14 of 31 days of new works in just intonation:

Day 14 is a mostly 7-limit work (there is one 17-limit note) that features several long sustained tones. I determined that the long tones should not change, but rather the other notes would alter their frequencies. This resulted in the entire work raising in pitch by about 52 cents (a quarter step) by the one minute mark. For the last couple bars, I switched unprepared back to the stating frequencies. To my ear there's no abrupt shift or noticeable sound of the key resetting. I assume those out there with perfect pitch will notice the pitch drift throughout the whole work.

Recorded 2 February 2014. Semi-dronal improvisation on cluster chords which often closely approximate just otonalities in (mainly) the 13-limit.

One of my first recordings to showcase 50EDO's wonderful shimmering quality in the more complex ratios. Both neutral tones as well as the lesser minor third see a lot of use in moving between 3, 11 and 13 identities.

The third of movement of 'Three Pieces for Electric Kantele in Just Intonation' (2009). Emma Kuntsi at her graduation recital, Sibelius Academy, Finland, Apr 23, 2016. Special kantele with the following 21 pitch classes (1/1 = C): 1/1, 25/24, 27/25, 9/8, 75/64, 6/5, 5/4, 32/25, 125/96, 4/3, 25/18, 36/25, 3/2, 25/16, 8/5, 5/3, 125/72, 9/5, 15/8, 48/25, 125/64. Fifth-tones ('diesis') abound, and septimal intervals, such as 7:4 and 7:6, are approximated by 5-limit intervals, making use of the 225/224 comma.
