We're proud to announce the first solo album from Papir guitar player Nicklas Sørensen coming out February 19! 

While there’s certain similarities with the records Nicklas has created with Papir it quickly becomes apparent that this is something quite different. “Solo” begins and ends with the instrument the Copenhagen native fully masters by now: the guitar. Throughout the album his main instrument is being explored as a generator of otherworldly, esoteric sounds as well as a compositional tool and - perhaps most importantly - a transmitter of pristine, cascading melodies.

There’s a peaceful, savory quality to the record that manifests a musical maturity. With help from the rhythm section of Papir as well as Causa Sui’s Jonas munk, who also recorded the album in El Paraiso Records’ new studio, Nicklas has created a wide, shimmering sound that seems to allude to a multitude of different styles and traditions. Considering that Nicklas is best known as a hard rocking guitar player with a knack for improvisation it’s perhaps surprising that his inclination for pattern-based minimalism, blissed-out ambience and experimental british “oceanic” music from the 1980s and early 1990s dominates throughout this set. This is the kind of record that rewards repeated listens - each listen revealing new layers in the architecture of sound. “Solo” is an affable, slowburning album where each component is given its own space and place to gently unfold and work its magic in the mind of the listener.

L'Arrivee d'Autrechose

In the Lens, Solo Andata’s fourth full-length album, was born from recordings found in the interstices of decades-old hard drives, lost email threads from disused accounts, and forgotten samples recorded on cassette dictaphones. These fragments were combined and re-worked with newer elements to create an album very much in the spirit of the band’s debut Fyris Swan (Hefty Records, 2006), an album touched by both folk and jazz and swathed in a dusty, narcotic haze.
Solo Andata’s Kane Ikin and Paul Fiocco have always pushed aside the digital studio in favor of a more haphazard and hands-on workshop vibe to their productions. They prefer near-broken acoustic instruments, cheap microphones and, as can be witnessed by their live performances, tend to turn anything they can get their hands on into a beautiful sound-making object.

While there is a raw and guileless nature to the duo’s sound it is precisely this that makes their music so powerful amidst the over-produced cliches of much modern music. The beauty of their work is how simple instruments and objects can be physically manipulated into creating such rich, layered sound. Dark, swaying, almost-looped melodies from piano, woodwinds and horns wrap themselves in smoky obscurity around remnants of percussion and warm beds of noise and the world around us.

In The Lens is very much a late-night record, reflected in the rain-soaked cover imagery, dripping with half-forgotten memories. Jittery yet calming, rhythmic, yet unhurried, it leads you down its dark corridors to a soft resting space. Ikin and Fiocco have created a new story around the chemistry of their creations that were taking place during the early days of their musical explorations.

Following the debut release of his minimal-music ensemble BANANA earlier this year, Josiah Steinbrick, the Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer returns with his first collection of solo works titled Meeting Of Waters, available October 27th on LEAVING Records. The album shares some of that ensemble’s concerns, notably in its interest in pattern based music, but here the emphasis is placed on subtle explorations of percussive tones and creating interior or imagined worlds.

The works on Meeting of Waters stem from Steinbrick's childhood fascination with anthropology and travel tales and almost operates like a cartography of some indeterminate landscape. Each piece has a palette of one to five elements that work in harmony together -- with synthesizers, marimbaphones, tuned wood, idiophones, bells, and gongs providing resonant tones that slowly accrete in detail. There's a measured yet thoroughly engaging pace throughout, that, much like Malaysian Temiar Dream Music, seems to "interpret the heart of reality".

As in the work of David Toop, Toshi Tsuchitori, Walter Maioli, or Luis Pérez Ixoneztli (whom Steinbrick recently collaborated with), the pre-historic and hyper-modern are effortlessly intertwined. If - as famed French Structural Anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss believed - myths, music, and dreams are "machines for the suppression of time", then "Meeting of Waters" features nine ingeniously and exquisitely crafted examples of that theory in action.
