Santa Claus

Samhain XXIV at Tangent, Oct 26 in Detroit. Erika did a captivating under 120 bpm techno set to launch the night, Wata Igarashi was on directly after me, with Mike Servito following Wata and ultimately Scott Zacharias closing the 12 hour party. In the other room the Luv NRG Soundsystem raged as T4T did their thing. 

For this set I took the approach that at this time of year, in the Halloween time period, that feelings morph and change, how we feel about music on these nights is different, the context is altered. What is stern, scary, and stark can be very exciting at this time. What is warm and funky also takes a new shape and can be oh so freaky. I felt an impeding doom in the air and I wanted to channel that into solid sound system experience that was transformative and immersive. A sonic description of another world, the true power of techno. I am extremely excited about the shifting of eras happening within techno right now, and there was so much fresh music that fit the No Way Back concepts, but within a more pure techno language. I was also thinking of Mike Huckaby, who I worked with in the Record Time Dance Room, and his theories that a few amount of sounds makes a record the most powerful. There’s so many thrilling jams with only 4 sounds right now, this set gave me a special chance to explore that. 

Technically I used 4 CDJ-3000s and a Pioneer V10 and its internal effects with lots of layering with a new approach to mixing. If I’m doing something historic, it has to fit perfectly within the sonic context of what I’m playing, and for an older cut that can be very hard with today’s sonics, so I spend time remastering the older songs through my mixer and outboard equipment to give them a way to be played and allow them to glow within this new and living context. It’s all experimental at this point, a work in progress. The ones called QM are an older “quick master” technique that I did with software. Enjoy this journey to the other side.

BMG at Samhain XXIV

Lowfish Live 2001 (Remastered 2025)
Now Lounge Toronto, Canada.

This is a remastered recording of a live set I did at Now Magazine’s Lounge in Toronto in 2002. The venue was literally just up the street from my studio and home at the time, and you can tell by the length of some of my delay feedback transitions that I was pretty self-assured in the music I was making at the time (“they will love this two minutes of feedback as much as I do - I know it” :) 

My live setup at the time was centred around a Roland VS-880, TR-808, SH-101, Korg SDD-3000 delay, and a Deltalab Effectron delay, plus a mini-disc player and mixer, etc. I had no intention of maintaining momentum throughout the set it would seem and I played what I wanted. The version of Fatblex was improvised, as was the first track (the never-released “Precision Hell”).  I have just completed the remix of Solvent’s “A Panel of Experts” and finished the set with that. It's somewhat weird to play a remix of another artist in your live set, but I was (and am) super proud of how it turned out and remember wanting to hear it loud.

A little experiment making a bass from a Roland Mc202 and a Roland sh1a, notable extras from the Ms20, Solina Strings and Jupiter 4. Drums from Cherry Audios KR-55C. As usual, no fucks given and it took as long to make as a chippy tea to eat.

Ghost Notes - Ghost Notes EP (CTX001)- VINYL OUT!

This track was recorded in late 1996 it was released on a clear blue vinyl 12" in 1997...by the Detroit-based label Interdimensional Transmissions (I.T.)..  on the compilation "From Beyond"...  with the seminal elctro hit I-F's "Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass"

Spacelings & Bassheads (emerged from the early to mid 90's Detroit Techno scene)- Being a live electronic duo (John Ryan (aka dr. disko dust) and Doug Keeney (aka Doug Surreal)  They frequently played live sets that consisted of lugging a soundcraft 24 track mixing console to the mega raves along with an array of synths, drum machines, effects & guitar pedals (most of which were analog).  Sometimes played live guitar, synth or even bass & frequently had a live mic. w/ messed up dubbed out vocals that questioned what the fuck was going on with the vibes, the people, the party, the universe,etc... sometimes taunting the audience and sometimes laughing with the audience but most of all sending bass waves through the earth & making people feel bass sounds that they didn't know existed.   It was not uncommon for the duo to be on a trip or 2 during performance// resulting in abnormal antics such as stripping down, requesting the audience to get naked or appearing on stage dressed in an ape suit in depends diapers in shackles on acid, were to be regularly expected.
