In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Monica Bolles are joined by the founder and CEO of Sound Particles Nuno Fonseca from Leiria, Portugal. 

Nuno Fonseca (PhD), is the founder and CEO of Sound Particles company, and was the creator of Sound Particles software, a 3D CGI-like audio software used in all major Hollywood studios in productions such as “Star Wars 9”, “Frozen II”, “Aquaman” or “Game of Thrones”. Former university professor (computer science and music technology areas),  Nuno is the author of the Portuguese book “Introdução à Engenharia de Som” (Introduction to Sound Engineering), co-author of the Portuguese book “Desenvolvimento em iOS” (iOS Development), author of "All You Need to Know About 3D Audio" ebook, and author of more than 20 papers regarding audio research. He is a member of AES, SMPTE, CAS, MPSE, AMPS, and a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Technical Committee on “Audio for Cinema”. 

In this episode, Nuno shares the story of the creation of Sound Particles and he explains the core operational principles of Physics-based Audio and its unique sonic properties.

The alien weaponry is initiated and computer/lock on systems boot up. Intimidating mechanisms start to spin followed by the sound of armour locking into place. The sound finishes on a quick zoom out and a view of the entire alien system.

All of the audio in this clip was designed,recorded, mixed and mastered entirely by Nathan Palmer Audio using a vast range of synthesis and  recording techniques.

Retro Sci-Fi Machine Noise Drone 12 - Unpleasant [loop]

Field Recordings of the Mysterious Ringing Rocks/Montana, music made with rocks. Near Butte Montana, and part of the edge of the Boulder Batholith, is a large jumbled pile of boulders, the rocks in this unique geologic formation chime melodically when tapped lightly with a crescent wrench or mallet.

It is believed that the ringing is a combination of the composition of the rock and the way the joining patterns have developed as the rocks have eroded away, though ultimately a concrete scientific explanation has yet to be arrived at. Curiously, if a boulder is removed from the pile, it no longer rings.

Slightly different pitches and timbres emanate from thousands of rocks in the formation, and in theory Butte's Ringing Rocks could form the basic ostinato for the "Music of the Spheres."(Musica Universalis)

Give me a minute to take you to the river. It's a glorious summer morning on the Macquarie River, running through the heart of Dubbo City in Central NSW. The birds, bees and water insects are doing their thing as the brown water swirls and eddies, gently washing over the pebbly beach on its way further west.

Another random science fiction sound effect. I made this one using the iVCS3 synthesiser app, with heavy reverb added in Garageband. The same sound loops round several times, with slight changes on each repeat.
