Listened to Summertime (George Gershwin) 12 years ago when I just moved to America, I felt the heart wrenching feeling and thick summer sound of Vietnam from the song. The next thing I knew was I had to play this song one day. Many of you have been listening to different versions of this song but here is my version of Summertime on dan Bau (the one-string instrument with pitch-bending bar made by water buffalo horn). Accompanied by Frank Martin on piano and the song was arranged by Nguyen Le (the great jazz guitarist, composer from France).

2011 release, the long-awaited eighth album from the Hip Hop/Rock trio. Hot Sauce Committee Part Two was produced by Beastie Boys and mixed by Philippe Zdar. This album marks Mike "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "Ad Rock" Horovitz and Adam "MCA" Yauch's first full length effort since 2007's Grammy-winning all-instrumental The Mix-Up.

Similar to All Clear, in Three-Mountain Pass I was interested in creating new sounds for the instruments. And in every piece I compose, I want to create layers of sounds, symbols, meanings, and voices in my music. 

The lyric was adapted from the poem "Three-Mountain Pass" by the 18th century female poet Ho Xuan Huong. I have admired her work since I was a little girl. Ho Xuan Huong's daring voice and multi-layered meanings in her poems are a pleasure for any reader. 

In respond to the poem, I created multi-layers through using various traditional instruments and the Hang (the modified steel drum invented in Switzerland). At the beginning of the piece, the dan Bau (the mono chord with pitch bending whammy bar made by water buffalo horn) was the calling voice of human’s desires especially of women’s desires. Later on, this “voice” was actualized with my own vocal. 

For my vocal, I developed it from A Dao (sung poetry) and Chau Van (medium’s trance singing) from Vietnamese traditional music. Using this style allowed me to half singing, half talking and really express different emotion, desires, voices, and thoughts of women.

The chanting starting at 5:27 was used as another desire voice of monks as they were sometime just human like us. As it’s a status quo in Vietnamese culture that women should hide their true voices or desires deeply away, this composition is my own revolution for women like us.
