A 
short story
 is a piece of prose fiction that can typically be read in a single sitting and focuses on a self-contained incident or series of linked incidents, with the intent of evoking a single effect or mood. The short story is one of the oldest types of literature and has existed in the form of legends, mythic tales, folk tales, fairy tales, tall tales, fables and anecdotes in various ancient communities around the world. The modern short story developed in the early 19th century.[1]


The short story is a crafted form in its own right. Short stories make use of plot, resonance and other dynamic components as in a novel, but typically to a lesser degree. While the short story is largely distinct from the novel or novella/short novel, authors generally draw from a common pool of literary techniques.[

] The short story is sometimes referred to as a genre.[2]


Determining what exactly defines a short story has been recurrently problematic.[3] A classic definition of a short story is that one should be able to read it in one sitting, a point most notably made in Edgar Allan Poe's essay "The Philosophy of Composition" (1846).[4] H.G. Wells described the purpose of the short story as "The jolly art, of making something very bright and moving; it may be horrible or pathetic or funny or profoundly illuminating, having only this essential, that it should take from fifteen to fifty minutes to read aloud."[5] According to William Faulkner, a short story is character-driven and a writer's job is to "...trot along behind him with a paper and pencil trying to keep up long enough to put down what he says and does."[6]


Some authors have argued that a short story must have a strict form. Somerset Maugham thought that the short story "must have a definite design, which includes a point of departure, a climax and a point of test; in other words, it must have a plot".[5] Hugh Walpole had a similar view: "A story should be a story; a record of things happening full of incidents, swift movements, unexpected development, leading through suspense to a climax and a satisfying denouement."[5]


This view of the short story as a finished product of art is however opposed by Anton Chekov, who thought that a story should have neither a beginning nor an end. It should just be a "slice of life", presented suggestively. In his stories, Chekov does not round off the end but leaves it to the readers to draw their own conclusions.[5]





Sukumar Azhikode defined a short story as "a brief prose narrative with an intense episodic or anecdotal effect".[3] Flannery O'Connor emphasized the need to consider what is exactly meant by the descriptor short.[7] Short story writers may define their works as part of the artistic and personal expression of the form. They may also attempt to resist categorization by genre and fixed formation.[5]

Short stories have no set length. In terms of word count, there is no official demarcation between an anecdote, a short story, and a novel. Rather, the form's parameters are given by the rhetorical and practical context in which a given story is produced and considered so that what constitutes a short story may differ between genres, countries, eras, and commentators.[12] Like the novel, the short story's predominant

Catalytic performance of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) electrostatically adsorbed on nanometric and semiconducting Fe-doped titanate (FT) nanosheets was successfully manipulated by visible light illumination. A colloidal solution of FT with a narrow band gap corresponding to a visible light region was fabricated through a hydrolysis reaction of metals sources. HRP could be easily bound to the FT at pH = 4 through an electrostatic interaction between them, and the formed HRP-FT was utilized for the visible-light-driven enzymatic reaction. Under exposure to visible light with enough energy for band gap excitation of the FT, catalytic activity of HRP-FT was dramatically enhanced as compared with free (unbound) HRP and was simply adjusted by light intensity. In addition, wavelength dependence of an enzymatic reaction rate was analogous to an optical absorption spectrum of the FT. These results substantiated an expected reaction mechanism in which the photoenzymatic reaction was initiated by band gap excitation of FT followed by transferring holes generated in the valence band of irradiated FT to HRP. The excited HRP oxidized substrates (amplex ultrared: AUR) accompanied by two-electron reduction to regenerate the resting state. In addition, the catalytic activity was clearly switched by turning on and off the light source.

What if a bad guy were to threaten Earth with a nigh-unkillable leech-plant, which he used to make his power exponentially greater? What if someone threatened the afterlife?  founders Morita and Ibuka realized that to achieve success and grow, their business had to expand to the global market, which required labeling their products with a short and easy brand name.[22] While looking for a romanized name, they at first strongly considered using their initials, TTK. The primary reason they did not is that the railway company Tokyo Kyuko was known as TTK.[19] The company occasionally used the acronym "Totsuko" in Japan, but during his visit to the United States, Morita discovered that Americans had trouble pronouncing that name. Another early name that was tried out for a while was "Tokyo Teletech" until Akio Morita discovered that there was an American company already using Teletech as a brand name.[23]


Sony co-founder Akio Morita founded Sony Corporation of America in 1960.[18] In the process, he was struck by the mobility of employees between American companies, which was unheard of in Japan at that time.[18] When he returned to Japan, he encouraged experienced, middle-aged employees of other companies to reevaluate their careers and consider joining Sony.[18] The company filled many positions in this manner, and inspired other Japanese companies to do the same.[18] Moreover, Sony played a major role in the development of Japan as a powerful exporter during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s,[28] supplying the U.S. Military with bomb parts used in the Vietnam War.[29] It also helped to significantly improve American perceptions of "made in Japan" products.[30] Known for its production quality, Sony was able to charge above-market prices for its consumer electronics and resisted lowering prices.[30]


Under the vision of co-founder Akio Morita[32] and his successors, the company had aggressively expanded into new businesses.[28] Part of its motivation for doing so was the pursuit of "convergence", linking film, music and digital electronics via the Internet.[28] This expansion proved unrewarding and unprofitable,[28] threatening Sony's ability to charge a premium on its products[32] as well as its brand name.[32] In 2005, Howard Stringer replaced Nobuyuki Idei as chief executive officer, marking the first time that a foreigner had run a major Japanese electronics firm. Stringer helped to reinvigorate the company's struggling media businesses, encouraging blockbusters such as 
Spider-Man
 while cutting 9,000 jobs.[28] He hoped to sell off peripheral business and focus the company again on electronics.[32] Furthermore, he aimed to increase cooperation between business units,[32] which he described as "silos" operating in isolation from one another.[33] In a bid to provide a unified brand for its global operations, Sony introduced a slogan

In the late 1990s, Kamal Haasan narrated the premise of a film to the director K. S. Ravikumar as they sought to collaborate following 
Avvai Shanmughi
 (1996). The initial script followed two men who meet in a train, quarrel, become friends and ultimately, one of them sacrifices everything for the other man. One individual was a Sri Lankan Tamil communist, while the other was a person who followed a right-wing political belief. Haasan had wanted to act in the film alongside Mohanlal, but Ravikumar refused the opportunity, saying it was not his usual film genre of expertise.[22] Haasan and Ravikumar instead moved on to work on a different project titled 
Thenali
 (2000) and chose to make the film's title character a Sri Lankan Tamil as discussed in the earlier script.[23]


After completing the draft for the film's script with alterations in early 2002, Haasan approached the Malayalam filmmaker Priyadarshan to direct it.[24] The two men were keen to work together since the late 1990s, and upon reading the script, Priyadarshan believed that it had the potential to be an "emotional love story".[24] The film's title 
Anbe Sivam
 was derived from the Shaivite saint Tirumular's poem 
Tirumantiram
.[25] In June 2002, Priyadarshan opted out of the project owing to creative differences.[26] Sundar C. came in as a replacement to work on the film.[27]

 was co-produced and distributed by V. Swaminathan, K. Muralitharan and G. Venugopal under the production banner of Lakshmi Movie Makers.[6][28]


In addition to being the film's writer, Haasan also played the central character, Nallasivam. Madhavan was selected to play Anbarasu in January 2002.[29] According to Kiran Rathod, she received a phone call from Haasan's office informing her that she was offered the role of Balasaraswathi, which she accepted.[30] Rathod's voice in the film was dubbed by the singer Anuradha Sriram.[31] Uma Riyaz Khan played the role of Nallasivam's friend and professional colleague, Mehrunissa.[32] In a 2019 interview with

, the film's script assistant and costume designer, Sujatha Narayanan, revealed that Nandita Das and Shobana were the original choices for Balasaraswathi and Mehrunissa respectively and that both of them declined due to schedule conflicts.[19]


Arthur A. Wilson, M. Prabhaharan and P. Sai Suresh handled the film's cinematography, art direction and editing, respectively.[6][5] Brinda, Chinni Prakash and Dinesh Kumar were in charge of the choreography while the stunt sequences were co-ordinated by Vikram Dharma.[37][38] Muthulakshmi Varadhan, Bharathi's sister-in-law, worked as an assistant editor in the film.[39] The make-up for Haasan's scars was designed by Michael Westmore and Anil Pemgirkar.[37][40] In May 2002, Haasan completed the makeup for his character Nallasivam in Los Angeles after filming the song sequences for
