Deep house heroes Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson have been playing records and producing music for over two decades. With releases on esteemed labels like Large, Innervisions, Local Talk, Freerange and Defected, their 90s residency at the legendary Sir Henry’s pretty much introduced a generation of Irish clubbers to house. Starting out on pirate radio, their long standing FGD radio show is going strong. ‘This Bit of Earth’ is a collection of tracks out on their home label Go Deep, their third album to date. Work began in the relative normality of 2019, finishing the tracks over the strange summer of 2020. The result mirrors the thoughts that such upheaval brings up - our world and our place in it - while also functioning as a kind of travelogue of journeys past and planned, real and imaginary. Mixing samples with modular synths, programmed drums with jazz loops, and quirky plugins with outboard gear, the album ranges far and wide while retaining a warm, natural sound.

The title track ‘This Bit Of Earth’ opens on an ambiguous note. A double bass motif weaves around a misheard vocal sample, layers of piano and vibraphone take up the call, as it gradually spins off axis to a distorted, disjointed finish. A highlight for me is the sonically stunning ‘Suburban Key’, with its dusty groove and fast paced drums, piano, and cinematic strings reminiscent of a Four Hero orchestral masterpiece. ‘Alice on Jupiter’ takes a deep breath and blends field recordings, gentle pads, modular bursts and a recurring melody. ‘Back Trace Dub’ strolls the imagined streets of Irish author Kevin Barry’s ‘City of Bohane’, noting the “taint of badness” in the air and revelling in the tense, dub-noir atmosphere. The spoken word intro of ‘I Could See’ expresses the dread of confinement and the relief and ecstasy of release, a theme the music reflects as it steadily builds to a joyful climax. Closing the album on an optimistic note, the languid, emotional ‘Culatra Ferry’ remembers better, beautiful days in the sun and looks hopefully forward to more.

Bambu Huts in 11.02.24. This is  no ordinary venue; it was a place I had stumbled upon a year before, a serendipitous discovery during a quiet moment of exploration. From the moment I set foot on its sandy shores, I felt an inexplicable connection to it.

The setting sun painted the sky in a palette of warm colours, reflecting off the rough waters of the bay that day.

As I began to mix, I let the surroundings guide my song selection. The melodic beats of uplifting Indie Dance echoed off the cliffs, blending harmoniously with the gentle lapping of the waves. Each track seemed to tell a story, weaving through the salty air and into the hearts of those gathered.

Time lost its meaning as the music carried us on a journey of sound.
We had experienced something truly special, a fleeting moment of unity and harmony with nature and music. The hidden bay had once again worked its magic, leaving us all with a sense of wonder and gratitude for the beauty of the moment.

As I packed up my gear, the gentle sound of the waves served as a reminder that this place held a piece of my heart. I knew I would return, drawn by the irresistible pull of the hidden bay and the memories of an unforgettable DJ set.

Slouk @slouk is a French DJ and record collector currently based in Brighton, UK. He discovered the sound of arpeggios as a child, through the 80s Synth-pop tapes from his parents and CDs borrowed at the multimedia library. In his early twenties, he moved to Canada where he heard the sound of Hi-NRG and Italo on the dancefloors of Montreal. Ever since, he started to collect records. Slouk's musical journey took a darker path five years ago, while he was living in Berlin. It is behind the missed doors of the Melancholie 2 fridge and the Wrong Era parties that he discovered another facet of Italo and Dark disco... Through this mix, he tried to transcribe the dark and energetic atmosphere he experienced there.
