[PREMIERE] | Random Sequence – Race Pace [KR019]

The third chapter in On Board Music’s The Meaning Of Time compilation series takes a different approach. The label engaged its community with an open call for tracks, and then tasked its core, established artists with remixes of each. The resulting, 22-track offering is a sublime snapshot of modern ambient and deep techno, showcasing the label’s richly talented roster and an exciting next generation. As with the previous compilations, all proceeds will be donated to Sea Watch and the important work they do for the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea.

Previously during the first national lockdown Third Son wrote, mixed and mastered his debut album in 20 days. Watch a short Stamp The Wax documentary on the work here. Following on from this remarkable achievement, Joseph has been going back to his early music collections that informed and inspired his work over many years, making his own re-imagined interpretations of them to form a new body of work called Retrograde.
Released in June, the covers span a broad church, from electronic, to rock, to minimal piano and ambient. The LP will be accompanied by a short run of tapes, the medium mostly used by the artist in formative years. The album was produced from his home studio in London.
“Over the last year I’ve been listening to key music from artists I’ve always gone back to over the years. The songs and pieces that still grab me after 100 listens. I slowly made my own interpretations, which kept me occupied during the drudgery of lockdown. We all need a project. I ended up with something for all settings, the sitting on the floor in the lounge listen, the kitchen disco listen and even an optimistic club listen.” Third Son Over his short but intensely packed musical history Third Son has been meticulously honing his craft and sound and has received accolades and spins from a huge cross section of the industry to include Maya Jane Coles, Michael Mayer, Anja Schneider, Jackmaster, Jasper James, Kolsch, Dark Sky, Terr, Lena Willikens, Moscoman, DJ Boring, Sasha and many more. As well as this he has seen praise from household publications such as DJ Mag, Mixmag, Beatport, Future Music among others. Following releases on Dusky's 17 Steps and Matthew Herbert's Accidental Jnr, 2021 is a bumper year with the artist releasing on Shall Not Fade, Unknown To the Unknown sub label Soft Computing, Disco Halal and Permanent Vacation. This plethora of names is testament to Joseph's ability to continually stay ahead of the curve and keep the listener guessing.

Next Summer is a journey through the on-going lockdown and summarizes Semodi’s work in his Berlin Kreuzberg studio during the pandemic winter months of late 2021. While tiresome for everybody, for Semodi it was also a time of inspiration and musical exploration crossing the boundaries of genres. Coming back from his walks through the streets of Kreuzberg, he often brought home a new melody that he could then craft into his music.

Ultimately Semodi came up with three distinct tracks and presents us with a touching and emotional record that reflects his perception and experiences during the lockdown. He thus opens up a musical perspective to this special time, that we can all relate to. While “Into Deep” is an older and more techno composition that found its way onto the record, Semodi started to work with singers to implement an element of storytelling into his more recent works.

For the title track “Next Summer” Semodi teamed up with his partner Maïlys who tells her story of the lockdown in Berlin with nothing to do outside and her desire to go out and do things again. Her spoken-word performance is embedded in a dry beat accompanied by a simple but melodic bass line. And as Maïlys expresses her hope for the time after the lockdown and her desire to dance again next summer, the music opens up and illustrates her hope with melodic arpeggios.

“Oh Boy” is a deep and driven piece of music that guides the listener into a dreamy and psychedelic parallel universe. Guest artist Antigone adds a mesmerizing dimension to the track and completes the picture with her outstanding vocal performance.

With Melokind, Nico Pusch and Theus Mago three skilled remixers contribute their personal interpretations of Semodi’s tracks to the record and thus broaden the multitude of genres to choose from.

While Melokind delivers a deep, melodic version of “Oh Boy” that radiates the positive warmth of a festival afternoon, Nico Pusch contributes an up-tempo tech house version of the same track that will work nicely on peak time main floors. Theus Mago presents us with his never-ending-lockdown psychedelic remix of “Next Summer”.

As he fast approaches a 10th out on this label, Linear B continues to establish himself at the cutting edge of the electronic scene. His wealth of vital tracks have made their way into the bags of titans like DVS1, Noncompliant and Truncate, and sit in the grey area between house and techno. Stuffed with detail and built on heavy grooves, these four newest cuts continue in that tradition.

The title track - inspired by the difficult journeys we face in life - opens up with a stark dystopian atmosphere. Unsettling vocals and fizzing synths combine with dark, distorted bass to make for arresting dance floor dynamite.

'Long in the Booth' is an homage to people who, like Linear B, still spend hours hidden in dark corners of clubs soaking up the vibes. It's punchy, rhythmic techno with hammering hits and a percolating baseline that keeps you locked. Add in a manic, spraying synth sound and you have a rave-making contemporary classic.

'The Emerald Isle' is where Linear B was born but has been UK-based since two years of age. The track features him singing in German and puts a twist on JFK’s famous speech over drilling bass and industrial techno drums. It is brilliantly dark and unsettling, and perfect for vast warehouses.
