As (Part 1 - Perspicacity)

here's an old ambient techno mix of mine, transferred from cassette tape. club du champ was a weekly electronica night at the blue box bar in vienna, hosted by peter rehberg of mego fame. it was an important part of the booming electronic scene in the 90s, providing a space where djs were allowed total freedom. at club du champ you could hear electro, dark ambient, noise, detroit techno, krautrock, industrial, dope beats, leftfield house and all kinds of electronic weirdness. open-mindedness was appreciated.
unfortunately i cannot provide a tracklist but among the artists you hear in the mix are LEO ANIBALDI, HAFLER TRIO, SPK, SEEFEEL...

This is a live recording, captured at Ego club in Düsseldorf, June 5 1999.  The music has been created with a self written step sequencer, the PX-18, controlling  a basic sample player and effects engine, all done in MaxMSP, running on a Powerbook G3. The step sequencer had some unique features, e.g. the ability to switch patterns independently in each track, which later became an important part of a certain music software.

I found the recording on a backup disk today. It has not been edited or mastered. During the first 20 minutes of the set, and before the 'encore' the Monolake CD 'Gobi' is playing in the background.

Khotin has been a key figure in the developing Electronic music scene emerging from Canada - for over ten years he has been producing and releasing music.

His sound has evolved exponentially, weaving between sounds and styles with cohesive ease of which others might only dream of. His records have found a home somewhere between the heady 90's ambient and trip hop era, deep house and has drawn upon abstract influences from balearic roots, trance and a whirlwind of other other cultural guises.

All of this makes his music remarkably interesting and hard to pin down.

His forthcoming album "Release Spirit" is forthcoming on acclaimed label Ghostly International. It features a collection of ambient soundscapes, tape recordings and off piste samples as Khotin draws inspiration from far reaching influences such as World of Warcraft, train journeys through Europe and Japan, family vacations and beyond.

We asked Khotin to record a mix which reflects a similar nature of the new album - the result is a delicate assortment of textures which lend themselves to a brooding optimism for the year ahead. At least we hope..

Shine Grooves (@shine-grooves) aka Andrey Kurokhtin is a musician, label head and record store owner from Yekaterinburg in Siberia. Over the past ten years he has released leftfield electronic music across a range of labels including his own Hanagasumi (@hanagasumi) imprint, founded in 2019 to release non-commercial, experimental music on vinyl. In 2020, the label grew into a physical record store, which is now a centre for the city's developing scene.

Andrey's mix for our series explores similar territory to his Space Garden LP, released last year on Carpet & Snares's CIRCUITS series. Ambient, experimental, ethereal: it's a real trip through the cosmos.

Ninja Tune Presents: Fitness with Sofia Kourtesis (DJ Mix)

For this mix I dug into my collection and tried to include some laid back tracks I love and usually don’t get to play when djing (i.e. the opening track by Shigeto. Absolutely in love with the whole album for many years) and combined them with some recently discovered disco & house (i.e. plz check out John Manhard), a pinch of indie sounds and other things I (re)discovered on my way through my record collection and felt right at the moment. 

One of the first things I remember when thinking about me and music is very little me listening to Elvis Presley in front of my parents hifi system in the living room for hours. With short excursions into hip hop I later got hooked to Punkrock & Indie music, playing bass guitar in bands for several years. I have always been most attracted to the rhythm section and funky stuff and as a former bass player basically everything with a groovy bassline still gets me going.

After moving to Mannheim more than 10 years I discovered clubbing, got more and more into electronic music and eventually started djing mainly (but not only) disco and house music, which has become an addiction to which I devote as much time as possible. 

I hope you enjoy the mix and it accompanies you smoothly into the new year. Thank you for listening.

From regular residencies at the infamous Robert Johnson he connects dancers from dust to space at Leipzig’s IFZ, Milan’s Tempio del Futuro Perduto Mexico City’s Funk Club and Berlin’s very own Staub as well as overseas. His discography reflects his profound artistic output on prestigious compilations like the Lifesaver 4 Compilation, the collab „And You“ and Ava Records „10 Yahre“ - Compilation as Форм. We can’t wait for what the future holds, Horkheimer will be well inspiring your paths.

This Is Your Time! Vol.42 - Maya Evers & Ben Evers

Constant Change asked me what i currently listen to. so i put together a home listening mix. the vibe is inspired by a calm day sometime between the end of winter and the beginning of spring. it has melancholic hints but also the optimism of sunlight shining through the windows again. 

i tried to find a common thread between songs that come from very different times and cultural backgrounds. so you will hear japanese ambient from 1982, drum n bass from 2022 that became a tiktok hit, italian hiphop from 2007 i discovered through a playlist by @youngerthanme or reggae by carl dawkins from 1977 next to the new single by lil yachty. i included music from england, iceland, malaysia, the united states, ireland, latvia, japan, jamaica, france, italy, the netherlands and sweden. 

seeing how good music from very different contexts goes together once again showed me that lots of stuff i listen to actually has its roots in or draws its inspiration from cultures and artists i will never know it did and that often never got the credit they deserved. so this is a little thank you to those people. i hope you enjoy the music as much as i do.

This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features @tartelet-records, a Copenhagen-based label founded in 2007 and run by Emil Nyholm. From house and trance to soul, funk and dub, the label is known for its varied releases, uncovering new talent like Brandt Brauer Frick, Uffe, or Doc Sleep.

Well, what is this? Simply said, this mix is a blend of ambient and downbeat music that is supposed to be both soothing and challenging. Listening back, it feels like diving deep into a fluorescent, sparkling abyss. 

I'm a fan of static and otherworldly drones and soundscapes. And so I've included key tracks from artists such as Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, The Necks, Madlib’s self-centred super group Yesterdays New Quintet and the great Jan Jelinek, among many others.
