Escapism is a theme that runs through the very heart of music. We listen to be transported, removing ourselves from our immediate surroundings as our senses relax and the sonic experience washes over us. During times of hardship, such a sensation is naturally magnified. Music gifts us a way out from our challenges, allowing us to choose how we feel in response to the sounds we hear. This theme has been explored meticulously by Audiojack over the past four years, resulting in the release of their second album, Surface Tension, on Crosstown Rebels this April. 

The pair described the meaning behind the album, encapsulating what inspired them to pursue the four-year project: “In the modern world our attention has become so fragmented with technological distractions. We wanted to create a piece of music that could be an escape from that, where someone can close their eyes and let their imaginations fill in the gaps that the other senses have left behind.” 

The journey sets off with Subterranea, a futuristic breaks-inspired cut that features shimmering female vocals throughout. It feels both euphoric and spacious, taking us to a world far removed from ours. The first collaborative effort comes next in the form of Under Your Skin. Released as the album’s lead single in February, Kevin Knapp’s weighty lyrical offering takes no prisoners, paving the way for the track’s punchy, percussion-heavy backbone. 

The American producer and vocalist is no stranger to the label, having collaborated with Audiojack previously on Implications as well as releasing Flipped on Crosstown’s sister imprint Rebellion. Binaural Dreaming soon arrives, plunging us into a sensory experience thanks to an array of worldwide field recordings, which simulate the experience of a dream. 925 Shift ups the pace, pairing resonant kick-hat combos against a myriad of robot-like synths whilst gentle keys chime softly in the background. 

Surreal yet familiar in one, it opens smoothly into Easy Rider, a groove-led, minimal laced dance number that transports us to brighter days with upbeat piano rolls and dream-like chords. Psychoactive pt. 1 continues the warming theme, delving further into tropical realms. Ethereal pads blend into pulses of acid to form an immersive auditory piece.

Finalizing the exceptional series that celebrates the legacy of two decades of Poker Flat Recordings, label-head Steve Bug drops another batch of stunning reworks of the label's classic tracks.

The EP kicks off with his seminal 'A Night Like This' which originally dropped back in 2001. Here it gets the treatment from label ally Mihai Popoviciu - the Romanian producer brings a new twist, shaping the material into a streamlined tech-house roller that is both faithful to the original and completely his own vibe.

Similarly, Germany's Sven Tasnadi brings his own particular feel for house and techno, tweaking Steve Bug’s 1999 classic 'Loverboy' into a slick, weaponized bomb, built around a minimal riff and slowly unfurling into something quite epic.

Next up is Lele Sacchi, the DJ, producer and promoter from Milan, who reworks 'FR 101.2' from 2004, re-emphasising the track’s main room prowess. His Dub Beat remix strips the track down to its basic elements, while keeping the energy on full.

Also included as a shop exclusive is 'You Make Me Feel (The Midnight Perverts Feeling nostalgic reinterpretation)', which as the title suggests, takes us back to 2002 via a chunky, rolling rework.

American dance music legend Roland Clark returns to Get Physical Music with 'All My Friends,' a massive house anthem that taps into the feelings everyone who has ever been to a club is currently feeling. Ant LaRock also steps up with a special Sunset Remix. 

Clark is a Get Physical regular whose last outing was 'WTF!' an anti-racist statement with label mates Roland Leesker, DJ Pierre, Phuture, and Chris Liebing. His most celebrated track, 'I Get Deep,’ has also been remixed on the label and is one of many essential tunes from the acclaimed writer and vocalist. Others have come on Strictly Rhythm, Defected, and Skint Records, and each one brings real house depth, warmth, and soul with prescient lyrics and unrivaled authenticity. 

This fantastic new single is another case in point. Built around a sure-to-become iconic vocal refrain from Clark himself, he sings 'I can't wait to see all my friends again,' with the same gusto and unique sense of grainy soul that has made him such a mainstay over the years. Bustling house beats and tribal drums, rising synths, and edgy fills create an irresistible sense of energy that builds to a peak and will blow up any dancefloor. 

Remixer Ant LaRock is a contemporary face who has been championed by greats like Kenny Dope and Armand van Helden, with whom he has also collaborated. He is a Grammy-nominated artist and here he flips the tune into a more stripped-back track with plenty of pent-up energy. His steely synths and the chopped-up vocal keep you locked before warm synth sequences arrive and bubble with late-night soul. 

The long-awaited return to clubs is just a matter of weeks away, and these are the perfect tracks to bring everyone together in an explosive fashion.

On 9th July Crosstown Rebels released ‘TTOE Remixes #3’ – the third in a trio of Eps featuring reworks from Krust’s lauded masterpiece ‘The Edge Of Everything’. The selection of top-drawer artists delighted to rub shoulders with the revered master added UNKLE, Hodge and DJ Nature to a list that has seen Masters At Work, Four Tet, Damian Lazarus, Batu, Calibre, LCY and Flynn all deliver inspired versions. Following ‘TTOE Remixes #3’ EP, the full set of reworks is now released via Crosstown Rebels as an album called ‘The Edge Of Everything - Remixed’.

Linking back to a shared history that saw Krust (alongside Roni Size) remix DJ Krush’s ‘Dig This Vibe’ and also provide their own track ‘Tribetoon’ for the seminal ‘Headz 2’ compilation, both on James Lavelle’s label Mo’Wax, now the influential DJ/producer/A&R delivers arguably his best ever work under the UNKLE alias, with deep breakbeat goodness that’s both classic and perfectly now.

A sonic son of Krust, fellow Bristolian Hodge works ‘Constructive Ambiguity’ into a proggy new school breaks monster that carves the original’s metallic bass into sharp new shapes, whilst sparkling like melodic stars is Four Tet’s take on ‘Negative Returns’, which packs a deceptively heavy punch, maintaining the original’s hurtling velocity, fuelled by a huge sub-bass engine.

In an exchange that reaches back to 1997, Krust sampled Masters At Work alias Nuyorican Soul’s ‘Nautilus (Mawtilus)’/‘Mind Fluid’ on his game-changing single ‘Soul In Motion’. This was reciprocated in 1998 by Nuyorican Soul’s remix of ‘Watching Windows’ by Reprazent, of which Krust was a key member. Here the duo individually known as Kenny ”Dope” Gonzalez and Little Louie Vega deliver pure audiophile euphony, somewhere between broken beat, real house, cosmic acid and future jazz funk.

A rugged halftime head-nodder (which again brings things full circle) is by Krust’s brother Flynn – a fellow member of 1989 ‘Wishing On A Star’ hitmakers Fresh 4 alongside Krust, and also a jungle legend in his own right, as half of veteran duo Flynn & Flora. More West Country royalty comes from Wild Bunch founder Milo Johnson AKA DJ Nature’s wigged-out Martian house by way of New York – which, in another of Krust’s many thematic circles – echoes the Latin-tinged, blunted science of Nu Yorican Soul’s ‘Mind Fluid’ and ‘The Nervous Track’.

Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus maintains Krust’s epic adventure narrative, retelling the tale in his own words, taking recognisable parts from the original and transposing them into a groovy cosmic house odyssey, whilst Calibre turns ‘It’s A Lot’ into a warm, glowing two-step roller with serrated analogue bass and masterful musicality befitting his classical training.

The spiralling beat-and-bass science of Batu’s version takes ‘Space Oddity’ and deconstructs it like a cubist portrait, matching Krust himself in pure outside-the-box original expression. Rising new school leader LCY is clearly a kindred spirit too, rivalling Krust with their future-facing breakbeat science that’s equally as compelling and inventive as the original.

With such inspiring source material, it’s unsurprising that all of the remixers have brought their best game to this impeccable collection.

'French trio Mind Street’s 'With Me’, featuring acclaimed Canadian songbird Jaidene Veda, gets a full make-over from South African heavyweight producer, Enoo Napa and Canada’s resident Deep House stalwart, Soledrifter. Bringing a deep afrocentric vibe to the song, Enoo Napa offers a spacious melancholy soundtrack with tension filled drops and haunting melodies that intensify and lift Jaidene’s sultry tones. Flipping the script, Soledrifter delivers a deep and jazzy vibe, playfully cutting up the vocals over a smouldering groove driven by piano stabs, a funky bass hook and deep beats.

Mind Street are a French production trio, Jess, Stif and Baby Duke. Their musical output weaves between Soul, Funk, House, Afro and Electronic music, with warm melodies and soulful voices. Since their debut single release on King Street Sounds with ‘Inside' in 2012, Mind Street have gone on to work on various productions and remixes for the likes of Dolls Combers, Groove Assassin, Souldynamic, Mark Di Meo, N’dinga Gaba and Dj Spinna, to name a few. Also working with vocalists Jalley, Andrea Love, Pete, Simpson, Jaidene Veda, Stephanie Cooke and Sheila Ford, among others In 2019 Mind Street launched their own label Soul N Pepa, a home for their own musical output alongside other artists including Stoim, Sulene Fleming, 84 Avenue, Systemfunk, Ignace de Souza & Boddhi Satva and many more.'
