Breakbeat Paradise Recordings is happy to announce one of our promising up and coming Breakbeat/Nu-Funk producers ‘Conte Crux’ is back with another instalment of funky/old skool beats. This time with his very own E.P. Hailing from the South West of England Crux’s style incorporates hip-hop, funk and old skool breaks at a slightly higher nu-funk/Breakbeat tempo, and not always together.

Conte Crux has been a DJ for 14 years and has moved through various genres. As music has changed directions, so has he. With a love for breaks and scratching he has warmed up for and played alongside the likes of The Scratch Perverts, Krafty Kuts, Benji Boko, Plump DJs, and many others throughout the years. Although he is fairly new to this side of the scene it seems there are promising funky times ahead.  
 
A.      Freak Money.  The EP starts with a boom and an upbeat mixture of his trademark funk guitar licks and riffs. With breakbeats looming large, the mixtures of vocals used are transformed from their original homes into a new place to live within this funky track. Expect a bass line that switches and a little LL, Missy, ODB and Kelis all in one room.

B.      That’s the way. A straight up funky disco mix of KC and the Sunshine bands ‘That’s the way I like it’. With cut and chopped vocals and a low searing, almost eerie bass line this is sure to be a favourite amongst hardcore Breakbeat fans.

C.      Take me to the Q-Tip. Next up is another funky beast, this time with live drums and bass line, Crux mixes Q-tip – Breathe and Stop with the legend that Al Green and Take me to the River in something that almost sounds like it truly belongs together. Expect rolling bass lines, scratching, funk guitar, horns and sing along choruses. Everything you need for an automatic classic.

D.      With a beat like this. Old Skool through and through this last tune promises to renew an old favourite in C&C Music Factory’s ‘Do you wanna get funky?’ Updated for 2014 but with late 90s flavours expect hard and low bass lines and delicately chopped vocals that turn fingers into drumsticks with much toe tapping as standard. Amen style breaks throughout and a major hook in the vocals this promises to be a favourite with Old Skool Breaks fans.

A tribute to the legendary DJ Kool Herc, whom invented the Merry go Round technique, brought Jamican sound system culture to America and birthed a sound we now call Hip Hop in the early 1970's.  We used the first 3 songs he used, but we used re-edits and different versions to create something uniquely fresh. The additional songs are some songs he could have played afterwards and some that came out way after his first Merry go Round, namely the Kurtis Blow song, but we wanted to add that call and response flavor that he did use in later sets. We hope you dig it, and respect the Godfather of Hip Hop DJ Kool Herc. 

The Merry go Round technique took all of the instrumental breaks out of popular songs and ran them together because he noticed people only danced on the instrumental breaks in songs. After listening to a sample of him doing this it got me thinking about a genre of music that exists today that seems to be one big instrumental break, electronic music.

When you listen to artists such as The Glitch Mob, or Bassnectar it is rare to hear a person singing, if there are words at all they are usually a few spoken words and no more than a few seconds. I thought maybe DJ Kool Herc’s technique used on the tables could have possibly been what created one of the most popular club and party genres that exists today. I mean most of it is upbeat, danceable, and contains little to no words, which is exactly what Kool Herc was trying to do when developing his Merry Go Round technique.

I know this tunes been reworked quite a few times but my take on it's a little different, upping the bpm to mid tempo/breaks territory (I was really making it as a bridge/dj tool between mid tempo & more upbeat breaks as this mix is 120bpm) . 

I've played this at a bunch of festivals & clubs shows & always goes down a treat! ENJOY.

My plan was to not remix, but re-play the song in a full live setting, as if in 1975 Bowie recorded the original and then flew to Brooklyn (or even Jamaica) to cut another take with my players. Everything was recorded 100% analog to tape. All on equipment that was available before 1975. My approach was to take influence of the Jamaican musicians (and recording styles) of the mid-seventies, and their infatuation with American Soul music. If you dig it, that would be great. Knowing that BOWIE digs it, I’m over the moon.

I started out as a old-skool DJ when I was about 19, used to love the ragga/hip-hop samples used in old-skool/jungle tunes and scratching was definitely my thing growing up as a DJ. I have moved since through various genres, hard-house/hard-trance/hard-style for example. I got to play with my heroes and idols for all of those genres under a different DJ name. I then moved onto House/Electro/Fidget but found the sound all too samey. What I really like is a mixture of the old and the new. I'm a massive Motown fan, a huge Stevie Wonder fan and love my hip-hop and funk.. I now seem to have found my place amongst the Breaks, Funk/Nu-Funk, Ghetto Funk, Breakbeat and Glitch-Hop. Keep your ears peeled, I'm working hard to create or re-edit, remix and mash-up tunes which have my favourite aspects of music in them whilst remaining true to my belief that 'music is there to make you feel.'
