Jerry Bouthier’s Continental records kicks off 2015 with the tentalizing  double-A side single ‘Imagine/Easy To Find’ from duo Bleu Toucan, the latest gem to break out of the French electronic scene.

Leo and Manu are Bleu Toucan. Leo lives in Pau in the south of France, Manu’s based in Paris, they are both in their mid twenties. It’s not even a year they’ve started to work together, yet the songs keep coming: breezy post-cards blessed by delicious melodies gathered from teenage diaries and worn out vinyls, Bleu Toucan’s songs are as personal as they are ambitious, light but never shallow, different yet familiar, and so addictive. 

If their debut single ‘Salade de Fruits’ EP, released last November on Profil de Face records (attracting praise from Les Inrockuptibles, France’s highbrow rock bible, and La.Ga.Sta, currently one of the most trusted music blogs out there) was the introductory set presenting Bleu Toucan’s gripping world, vaporous and seamless, chilled and nevertheless rhythmic. Their second single ‘Imagine/Easy To Find’ on Continental was gonna be the one that would introduce them to the dancefloor. 

First comes ‘Imagine’, a glorious break up song (?) sung in French, a moonlit face to face rocked by housey pianos and quite simply a modest jewel of emotive nostalgia. In the hands of Continental’s stalwarts Reflex, ‘Imagine’ morphs into an inventive dreamy escape that’s still driving. Lud and André’s sound is blossoming without losing any of its shimmering harmonies. 

The EP’s other A side ‘Easy To Find’, a mini carnival wrapped around yet another killer piano line and tingly vocals sung in English, is as melancholic and powerful as ‘Imagine’ despite the all around sensual Latin fever. To compliment the original, the club mix switches the hypnogroove on as if it’d been tailored by those hot shots in Norway… and you’re yet again in the streets of Rio pulling your best moves.

This is how pop music should sound in 2015: sexy and daring but never over-confident, sensitive and still funky, melodic without sounding fake. Feels like a big, genuine breath of fresh romantic air… then again what else to expect from talented French boys?

After last month’s detour by Mexico for the Bluehost EP ‘We Need You’, Jerry Bouthier’s London-based label Continental hops across the channel to hook up with Middle for the release of his stunning debut single ‘In Your Way’.

Located by the Mediterranean Montpellier, France’s 8th city twinned with Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona and Louisville USA, is famous for its huge student community and thriving nightlife. Part of the city’s bubbling electronic/dance scene 24 year-old Steve ‘Middle’ Stullgens is a talented musician who stands out from the lot for crafting… UK house. Surprisingly on the ball, fresh, innovative and damn funky, Middle’s compositions are not only unusual coming from a Frenchman, they’re also tastily groundbreaking not least for their musicality, inspired chord sequences and sonic dynamics.

A self-taught musician who started playing bass in punk bands at the age of twelve, Middle soon caught the programming bug and started to produce tunes in his bedroom, exploring genres until he eventually settled on house with a strong UK flavor a couple of years ago (“I love it cos it’s so groovy!”). After a string of free downloads which quickly attracted attention in Europe and as far as the US (his first track ‘Girl’ was snapped up by EDM.com and has clocked up 75,000 Soundcloud plays to date), Middle’s name’s soon getting bigger and bigger in the right circles, and deservedly so.

‘In Your Way’s no-nonsense original is a beautifully chiseled piece of futuristic house, both moving and griping at the same time, complete with euphoric peaks and enchanting melodic breakdowns (that vibraphone). Peppered by snippets of tweaked soulful vocals, synth chords and wooshes pulsate like heartbeats to the repetitive 4/4 injecting powerful tension to the dancefloor.

Remix-wise, Continental labelmates Reflex – coincidentally also From Montpellier – deliver a dreamy rewrite that’s still 4/4 but slower and sexier. Another local, DJ/producer Kaviar exercises his future beats magic and turn things around dramatically. Next Sergey Ledovskiy’s project Ledaux – a Russian based in San Francisco - takes the song into housey disco territory. To finish - other new French kid on the block - Aimeric Miriel AKA The Vein offers his own take on futuristic beats, soundtracky and vibey.

After a handful of remixes The Kung Fu Divas return with original material – and ladies and gentlemen – hands down, it's a smash hit. TEKK ME is not only a techy and percussive elektrobeat-track that will rock the floor for sure – it is also graced with the incredible talent of – DRUM ROLL – the fantastic, incredible, amazing, guest-vocalist BARCA BAXANT! Will the sensation ever end??? No. The gifted diva joins the KFD from her own band THE BANDALOOP and many people will still know her well from her preceding projects SILICONE PUMPGUN and PRINCESS HIM.

TEKK ME is also an experiment in the matter of the pop-song itself, the lyrics almost entirely consist of listing some of the favourite artists of The Kung Fu Divas and Barca – hence also the refrain … 

No wonder that the créme de la créme of the viennese electronic scene where eager to put their remix-skills to work. 

LEITSTRAHL, who put the L in funky electro provide a solid roller, fuelled with influences from 80ies italodisco to 90ies IDM all in one. What a shiny piece of circuit mastery. The Divas are amazed.

On the other hand the up-and-coming specialists for elegant minimal afro-influenced machine-funk that is WEISZ & SCHRENK put their already trademark-y craftmanship to work and a piece of ethereal beauty and mind&bodymovement appears. Wow! 

And last but not least another redux emerged from France – the Les Distilleries Ideales remix takes no prisoners and demands a crowded dancefloor, will everyone please headbang and bootyshake? Merci!
