We went a bit ravey with this one, and that's a good thing.

Breakbeat heavy tune ’T-800 Type Beat’ serves as the power tune in the release through it’s percussive breakbeat, nostalgia inducing synths and an infectious bassline driving up the energy levels alongside sampled vocal chops

St. Petersburg native (and Lobster Theremin & Steel City Dance Discs mainstay) Maruwa provides an amazing 90’s trance influenced remix to the 12”. Having just remixed Skream (omg), her style is exactly what we dig. In this remix jacking drums and classic synth chords form a solid foundation on top of a gritty acid bassline

‘Roxanna_Break_Stuff’ incorporates memories of acid bright neons, the ubiquitous smileys, baggy trousers and bucket hats. Pumping drums, funky synth work and a standout vocal edit makes this one a unique and catchy piece of rave music culture.

‘Roxanna_Break_Stuff comes accompanied with a remix by Japan’s rising UK garage producer Stones Taro, who's been featured lately in several places with his on target vinyl releases and precise DJ mixes.

A bit different one is ‘Takedown Request Edit’, which stands out as the deepest track on the release, keeping things eccentric in terms of the rhythm section while bringing in spacey pads to close out the record on a high note.

Paul & Shark - T-800 Type Beat

As one of the three co-founders of Washington D.C. production and DJ trio Black Rave Culture, James Bangura is no stranger to situating electronic music within its most purposeful and potent contexts. With this new duo of tracks, however, Bangura taps into a deep, personal internality, metabolising visceral experiences and personal transitions into unexplored phases of his musical life.

The bass-forward “Harrar” is a complex organism which operates on two planes: a sweat-drenched 150pm symphony of synth pulses, fidgety percussion, shimmies and distorted vocals, that falls into lockstep with a meditative, dubby bass tone that calmly swells and recedes. Emerging out of Bangura’s high intensity hardware jam sessions with friends and collaborators, both the depth and energetic fizz of “Harrar”’ are signified by its name, borrowed from Harrar Coffee & Roastery--a beloved Ethiopian coffee house and community meeting place in Washington D.C. that radiates warmth and familiarity.

“Witness Dub” occupies less of the senses, exploring a state of liminality through a contemplative deep house signature. Having emerged from an extended period of active duty in the military, Bangura had to navigate civilian life for the first time, causing him to process multiple culture shocks that stretched across culture, language, communication and identity. “Witness Dub” finds Bangura at this crossroad, juxtaposing the steady propulsion of kicks and drums with pensive minor key chords, as he begins to explore the other side of the self, letting the energy guide the music.

Fireground's live sets brim with joy and Mediterranean warmth, so as we have now passed the vernal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and are well on en route to leave the long, cold winter behind, what could be more fitting than a new release from the duo? 

As with their three previous releases on Tresor (Dualism, Refreshing Part 1, and Dreams) for Love Letter Angela and Daniele have created a heady melange of styles of techno synonymous with the turn of the century with such outrageous elan and jubilation that they practically embody the musical term giocoso:

"We had the "summer" concept in mind from the beginning, this pushed us to create a message in our sound making it uplifting and engaging, capable of conveying a positive, romantic and warm vibe.

In our productions we always give priority to the harmonic parts such as melodies, pads, piano and guitar riffs, the peculiarity of this EP is that all the tracks were born first from these elements, and only at the end the groove was crafted, not due to a difference in importance, rather to ensure that the rhythmic part paid as much respect as possible to the harmonic part."

This decision to build upwards from the harmonics has paid dividends: the entrance of a string section provokes visions of a rapt club crowd cheering with exultation; a looped groove stimulates a connection to such gleeful nostalgia that is almost certain to be heard at many festivals in coming months; a blissful pad sweeps over a track like the first rays of sun in the morning; a filtered synth rises to be met with a xylophone-like countermelody&hellip;every track has a moment where the music overflows with some form of happiness. Together the collection promises, and perhaps even delivers, a summer both ecstatic and joyful.

Back in February we invited Dukwa over from Florence to come stay with us in Glasgow and write some music. The time spent locked away in the studio was similar to this social distancing we're dealing with at the moment actually... and coincidently we came up with a track that in retrospect, we thought was pretty apt for these strange times we are working through...
