Kiernan Abbott is a record collector & DJ who constantly pays homage to his Welsh roots like nobody else, uncovering lost gems from his homeland and beyond and selling them via his Fragments in Wax platform; a webstore,  YouTube channel and killer mix series.

For the podcast, Kiernan stuck to his guns with a hour journey, through all sorts of Welsh oddities, brushing on everything from washed out Wave to heavy Trance rippers.

Q: Thanks for your contribution to our mix series, how did you prepare for this mix, and how would you describe the eventual result?

A: Thank you! It's a pleasure to finally get this put together after months of waiting for the right records/tapes/CD's to become available. I was in the middle of building a tracklist for 2 very different mixes, one of which being an early morning AOR/Pop orientated mix with the other being this one - an early to mid 90's blend of IDM and other electronica. I'm pretty happy with the result, it was fun to play some better known tunes by Juicy Peach, Eirin Peryglus and Yiffie amongst the weird Welsh things that have come up recently. 

Q: Is there a record in the mix that you associate with a special story?

A: Not so much a record, but a CD Promo I was given by a Welsh group called Glovebox with a bunch of unreleased material from the late 90's featuring a few music videos! It's got a really great blend of IDM, Ambient House and Breakbeat tunes that only had a few radio plays and the odd play out at coastal raves.

Q: How do you dig for new music, and/or what kind of things arouse your interest in a record? 

A: Over lockdown Discogs has been an ever present tool, however I've found that I had much more luck making connections with private collectors. I've got some really lovely family/friend connections in Wales and have a buddy in Cornwall who has an amazing collection of privately pressed records from the mid 80's. I also chat to other DJ's who have similar tastes that are kind enough to share pointers for things that might be of interest, I'd say that's my favourite way of digging because you make a friend along the way! In terms of picking out records, I think the sleeve always tells a story. But I also focus on the label for info, the more DIY it looks the better! 

Q: One record you will never let go, and one that doesn’t want to leave your wantlist?

A: I never sell any of my personal copies of Welsh language records and tapes, especially given the recent rise in demand. However, one that stands out is probably a self released cassette I was given by an Aberystwyth post-punk/experimental pop group called Crisialau Plastig. It was recorded on a 4-track recorder and used wacky instruments like a toy flute, a harmonica and of course, a drum machine. 
One that never leaves my wantlist is probably an LP by Ffenestri, called 'Tymhorau'. It's recently sky rocketed in price and I'm lucky to have come across a few copies. It was recorded at the Vestry in my village and was the first release on my locally loved Fflach label, which is now defunct due to the very sad passing of the Jones brothers. 'Y Tymhorau' is a fortuitous dance tune that I play 99% of the time at gigs that always pricks people's ears, whether they're into this scene or not. 

Q: Music bonds people. Any djs/projects/shops/etc.. you would like to shout out? 

A: Yes definitely, Thom from Freedom of Groovement is the person who encouraged me to start taking music more seriously along with Vish from Dar Disku who pushed me to play more to my roots. Corey and @Kaynethehermit from Continuous Movement and DiskFrisk respectively for some great company in recent months. Also, @j_gregss from @In-Form who I've been lucky enough to share a few drinks and some tracks (heard here) with over some musical chatter.

Pero esta ocasión fue más que especial.

Sunset The MARINA crew me invitó a hacer un live distinto, enfocado en el viaje y olvidando la cadencia de baile.
Durante algunos meses estuve trabajando en este set que viaja a través del universo Barrio Lindo desde el origen hasta la actualidad con mucha música que nunca ha visto la luz, colaboraciones con amigues y otras canciones tan viejas que ya casi había olvidado.

Este fue el primer show en mi segundo tour en Japón que aún estoy realizando.

Esta entrega viene de manos de nuestra ilustre paisana, Gela. 
Gela es una viajera natural y no sólo por su música, esta Dj procedente de Riópar ha vivido en países y ciudades muy dispares, dentro y fuera de España, y se ha ido empapando de diferentes culturas musicales, que pueden ir desde la música Brasileña hasta el Detroit más futurista. Fruto de ello es el inmenso bagaje musical que despliega en sus sets, donde siempre se encuentra un nexo común entre los diferentes estilos que pincha. Bien sea un set  más enfocado a la música Disco, Electro o Acid, todo suena a Gela, y su búsqueda del Groove profundo, del Beat lento pero contundente y que invita al baile mientras te alimenta el alma. 
Gela ha pinchado en infinidad de eventos en Madrid, ciudad en la que reside actualmente, pasando por cabinas de salas como Siroco, Café Berlín, Sala el Sol o festivales como Brunch in the Park. Sus sets también han sido bailados en lugares tan emblemáticos como Razzmatazz (Bcn), Corsica Studios (Ldn), Red Light Radio (Ams), Wilden Renate (Brl), Warm Up Festival (Mur) o Festival de Los Sentidos (Ab), y como no, en Ocio (Mu), sala en la que debutó y a la que le guarda un profundo cariño, y es que Gela es mucho Beat y mucho Love.
Además, junto a Madame Excuse, forma Iguana, proyecto enfocado a la música Disco más orgánica y con esos aires oldschool que tanto gustan a nuestra invitada.
Sobra decir que para nosotros es un verdadero honor contar con Gela en nuestra serie de podcast y creemos que para vosotr@s esta sesión será una auténtica gozada a ritmo de buen Electro y mezclado con mucha clase por nuestra manchega predilecta.
