When you arrive in Yazd, in the south of Iran, the first thing that catches your eye are the ventilation towers that dominate the skyline. Made of clay, the wind towers (Persian: badgir) have been used for centuries to provide cross-ventilation and passive cooling for buildings. You can find them mainly in the villages of southern Iran and also in Bahrain. To find solutions to today's challenges such as global warming, we should look more to traditional techniques.

Yazd

The Torre des Verger, also known as the Torre de les Ànimes, was erected in the year 1579 with the purpose to stand vigilant against the scourge of pirate raids that haunted the sea around Mallorca. This landmark, steeped in history, is but one among the many that have stood guard over Mallorca since the age of knights and castles, silently witnessing the island's past.

Contrallum - Albufera

Konvent is a late XIX century nun’s convent and textile colony located in Cal Rosal, a little village in the north of Barcelona. An artist’s community converted this place in a creative hub and an artistic laboratory few years ago. This live set (July 6, 2019) at Konvent is nourished on what it means to recover, give life and revalue an abandoned industrial heritage.

Contrallum @ Casa Elizalde 13.12.2019 - Contemporary sublime

La Corniche, in Beirut, is one of the most alive and amazing Mediterranean seafronts. It is the balcony of Hamra neighborhood, where the streets have no numbers, where the smell of hookah escapes from bars, and where hundreds of people from dozens of cultures daily take a walk, cane fishing, bathing, or running. This set was inspired while wandering around this Lebanese landscape that lives permanently the present.

Contrallum - La Corniche

One of the most disturbing scenes I have ever seen was while driving from Nouakchott to Nouadhibou, in Mauritania, across a track parallel to the beach. We came across a veritable cemetery — or dump — of hundreds of colossal boats (see photo: https://tinyurl.com/yavlq82u )

In the 1980s, the Mauritanian Government allowed this part of the coast to become one of the largest abandoned ship cemeteries in the world, with the intention that Mauritanians could buy ships to run their own businesses and boost the national economy. After some years, the ships became new ruins, the modern ruins of our supposedly advanced civilization. The image of the semi-underground ships in the sand provoked great sadness, helplessness, and frustration as a society that is directly proportional to the indescribable global economies that generate it.
