Lost Colony Transmission

One of the most disturbing scenes I have ever seen was while driving from Nouakchott to Nouadhibou, in Mauritania, across a track parallel to the beach. We came across a veritable cemetery — or dump — of hundreds of colossal boats (see photo: https://tinyurl.com/yavlq82u )

In the 1980s, the Mauritanian Government allowed this part of the coast to become one of the largest abandoned ship cemeteries in the world, with the intention that Mauritanians could buy ships to run their own businesses and boost the national economy. After some years, the ships became new ruins, the modern ruins of our supposedly advanced civilization. The image of the semi-underground ships in the sand provoked great sadness, helplessness, and frustration as a society that is directly proportional to the indescribable global economies that generate it.
