Summertime Wubbin' - Dec 2025 Mix

The Balafon is an African instrument where wooden panels get struck by mallets over hollowed out gourds to create a multitude of organic sounding tones like those of a marimba, just more earthy. Rather than the traditional 11 note, equal temperament tuning system that we are accustomed to in the west, the Balafon uses a pentatonic scale. This makes it a lot more difficult to accompany traditional instruments because there is not C, D, E, F, F#, etc. It’s an entirely different framework. 

My typical workflow for a composition is to start with a key signature, such as A minor, and work forward from there. Since I began this project by playing the balafon, I had to instead work backwards and discover what western chords would complement the progression. After fumbling around for an hour or so on a keyboard, I landed on the progression of F minor to C minor in the key of C minor. 

I have a new group that I have been meeting with called Make Music Mondays. On the first Monday of the month, we get together and present our challenge piece. This month’s challenge was to first create a sample and then send it to the group. From there, we would each compose a one-minute piece using every single sample. Having access to the EAC lab at UNR, I decided that this was my opportunity to finally record some of the Balafon that had been collecting dust in my living room for the last four years. 
After putting together the piece for the group, I decided that one minute was not long enough to tell the story I wanted. It was only one dimensional. Therefore, I decided to extend it to four minutes. However, this was on a different day, in a different place, and in a different state of mind and mood. 

Life can be a bit all over the place. This piece explores how the very same tones can sound and feel different the very next day if presented in a different context. It explores how a minor scale can seem to frolic and be whimsical in one context, and then dark in another voicing. The same riff can be bouncy one day, and dramatic the next. Lunes Martes demonstrates that even the most joyous of melodies can eventually grow into overtones that become lost in the deep sea of harmonies. Can we say more of life?

Chuck is co-founder of House Party, a cornerstone event series in Reno’s dance music scene. Through this series, Chuck has had the privilege of sharing the DJ booth with renowned artists, such as: Atish, Rodriguez Jr., m.O.N.R.O.E., Tara Brooks, Sacha Robotti, Robag Wruhme, Andreas Henneberg, Spencer Brown, Yolanda Be Cool, Ardalan, Nala, and Holmar. kosha (Sanskrit कोश, IAST: kośa), usually rendered "sheath", the covering of the Atman, or Self. 

kośa is a soundsmith who brings you a flavour mixing - downtempo, acid house, minimal//deep-tech ranging from 80 to 120 bpm, electronic yet organic tunes, deep hypnotic meditative grooves and solid kicks infused with Indian, Arabic and other Ethnic influences which we beautifully term 'spiritual deeptech' a genre coined by kośa, rooted in the deepest part of India's underground scene.

ॐ//om -The great primordial sound, the original sound from which the universe was created, the sound of all sounds together. According to Hindu metaphysics everything is made of sounds (vibrations), since everything is sound, healing through it, is an ancient ritual, as sound is not only heard through our ears but vibrates within every cell of our bodies.

For us at kosa records this network gives space to connect ideas of various forms to do art for art's sake - not for social recognition. to break the rules of systematic exploitation of the artist's energy and to feel the soul in synchonicity.

We consumed too much music and it started to leak and this is when kośa evolved into a record label in January 2019 with the release of their first various artists compilation Mīmāṃsā, though the real beginnings were with our Podcast series the raga saga https://soundcloud.com/kosamusica/sets/the-raga-saga where in we showcase an hour of beautiful music from our favorite artists from around the world.

50% of all proceeds are donated to Pawbro India Foundation that aims at feeding stray dogs and other animals in Pune, India, feeding over 150 strays everyday. Part of the artists’ stream shares are directed towards these efforts.
