Coming across quality producers isn’t always easy. 

Whilst we do our best to search far and wide for great talent, it’s not often that we have the right artists come to us. 

One of the winners of our remix competition in early 2020, Ryo Odagawa delivered a spectacular remix of Subp Yao’s “Backwitda”. Producing under the moniker Fetus, the 21-year-old prodigy lives in Osaka, Japan and is fast becoming a recognised name in the Japanese Drum and Bass scene. His tune, Black Glass, was unearthed recently on our annual Lunar New Year-themed, “The Year of the Ox” compilation, and was incredibly well-received. 

We’re now excited to be releasing his debut EP “Dark Monkey” along with Black Barrel’s stamp of approval with his remix of “Tar 11mg.” 

The five-track release is a little goldmine of tunage that is yet another chapter in Fetus’s unfolding gritty narrative as an electronic musician and showcases the absurd lucidity of every note and sonic stride he takes. 

The opening track “Tar 11mg” leads as the EP’s atmospheric rolling Drum’n’Bass belter with a soulful yet sinister touch. Half-time tracks “Depth” and “Dark Monkey” are both sublimely wonky yet punctured with club hungry industrial energy and sophisticated sound design. 

“BOO” is an energetic 160 breakbeat trip with hints of electro, clinical vocal stabs and other elements best just listened to - we won’t bother defining which boundary this tune crosses - fuck it! 

For the EP’s dirty remix flip we invited Russian boss and long-time Unchained supporter Black Barrel. Known for being able to make dance-floor bangers whilst hungover, blindfolded, using only a kebab and a small collection of broken watch parts, expect faces to get very unattractive when this remix drops.

a year or two ago, some friends and I were messing around on some decks throwing various acapellas over songs, and happened to try Stormzy's 'Wiley Flow' over first four bars of Burials famed 'Archangel'. it was so catchy that I had to sit-down and make a full version, recreating the rhythm of the break w/ my own sounds and tastes, and then building from there.

I spend so much of my time taking music-making very seriously, and something like this that's a bit more fun and relaxed was a really refreshing creative change, 

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do :)

Having thus far mainly featured as a guest on music released by long time supporters Ivy Lab, the Chamber E.P marks the first solo excursion for 28 year old Nick Jackson a.k.a Havelock; arriving via the same 20/20 LDN imprint that housed all of his collaborative work.

Featuring a span of BPM’s and aesthetics ranging from knocking 808’s to papal-inspired Jungle; the project makes for a relentlessly bleak and unsettling listen - featuring guest appearances from 20/20 mainstay Deft on the track “Chimes”, and Bristol-based instrumental grime producer Hi5Ghost with his remix of “Graphics”.

Born and bred in London, Havelock has been quietly honing his production for almost a decade, branching out from his initial explorations in minimal drum and bass into territory closer in complexion to noise-scene abstractions and alt-hip hop.

Having cut his teeth DJing in clubs and bars during his stints in Amsterdam and Leeds, he went on to found the Buried Audio record label, responsible for releasing music from acts who would go on to become celebrated actors in the bass music landscape. Sitting in the same lane as a small cohort of pioneering outfits such as Darkestral & Exit Records, Buried audio went onto release some of the earliest works from artists such as June Miller (Ram Records) & Nick Modern (Metalheadz/Tempa)

It was only after wrapping up Buried Audio and returning to London that the Havelock alias was born; his focus turned to producing music that encapsulated an increasingly far-reaching taste in obscure underground electronica. Drawing on influences from ambient, metal and abstract hip hop, his sound is loosely engineered by design and paints bleak landscapes with a tangible rawness and innocence.
