My entry into the @drumetrics #drumwars contest. I probably should've sample more of the drums, but I'm old and lazy. 
I worked it out on a maschine studio, which I'm just now learning, and I sequenced it and fleshed things out in Pro Tools 5. Yes, 5.

Solid Steel (1st June) This week we welcome back Prefuse 73, who has his first solo album in three years 'Sacrifices', coming out on 15th June on Lex . Following a detour into fractured, kaleidoscopic hip-hop on recent releases, he has become increasingly interested in injecting a sense of space into his characteristically complex productions. The resultant 17-track collection is akin to watching an old photograph deteriorate in one’s hands, as otherwise dense beats dissipate into airy expanses of emotionally resonant electronics. His trailblazing early albums altered the course of underground music and influenced the paths of countless artists, though few could emulate his uncanny skill for evoking urgency via virtuosity. You can catch him playing at Low End Theory on 13th June and he told us;
"Not much to say about this mix other than this is a Pt.2 // follow up to the Prefuse 73_Solid Steel that was compiled in 2015. Around the 12 track mark, all of the raps lose the words and become instrumentals for all of those sick of words. Most of the material comes from cassette, I hope this can serve as an accompaniment to your Summer."

Solid Steel Radio Show 1/6/2018 Hour 1 - Prefuse 73

For episode 94 I traveled deep into Flushing, Queens to record a conversation
with Neek The Exotic and Large Professor. People across the globe will be familiar with the Main Source song "Fakin' The Funk" (from the 'White Men Can't Jump' soundtrack) which introduced the world to the voracious vocal delivery of Neek The Exotic. Large Professor needs no introduction as one of New York City and the genre of hip-hop on a whole, he is one of it's great producer/MC's. In this quick hour convo, I go back and forth with the two lifelong friends, dialoging about their work together and separately. Neek has a brand new album streaming everywhere right now entitled 'Hell Up in Queens'. It features Large, Q-Tip, Freddie Foxxx and more. With Large, I tried to touch on some productions and moments in his career that might not have been covered - all in the context of the few block radius many of the most well known Flushing-based hip-hop artists live and grew up in. I close with a track from Neek's new album.

Solid Steel (24th May) Following on from last year's treatment of 'Paul's Boutique' (by DJ Food, Cheeba and Moneyshot), United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul's groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It's not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it's 25th anniversary. In his own words;
'Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul's '3 Feet High and Rising'. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, 'How High's The Water Mama' tells the story of one of hip hop's most influential albums.
When De La Soul's debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of '3 Feet High and Rising' found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate's older brother (though I'm pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes - in fact I can't think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus '3 Feet High and Rising' holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it's time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul...'
