"Cold Crystal Timbres" recalls the immediate past. Hight-tech emotions and synthetic unnaturalness: When sonic hybridities were echoing early 2000s pop.

Once a haven for nerds and enthusiasts, the internet became accessible to many in the early 2010s. Utopias linked to the early internet, such as that of an anonymous and democratic cyberspace, are finally being displaced by a neoliberal Silicon Valley ideology that manifests itself in platforms like Facebook and Amazon.

Rebecca Fuxen and Martin Rovan’s mixtape "Cold Crystal Timbres" pays tribute to the music that emerged from this structural change and aesthetically relates to it. This hybrid music genre, which developed between 2010 and 2015, is characterized by both cold digital sounds and nostalgic pop references. It is embedded in collectives, loose associations, labels, events, or curatorial projects that network primarily through platforms such as SoundCloud and Myspace. Although this music takes place mostly in traditional club settings, it is transnational, digital networking practices that create political activism and solidarity: many collectives establish platforms for DJs, producers, and activists. They reclaim the white- and male-dominated club scene and emphasize the queer context of its genesis and the central role of BPoC within club music.

Listening to the digital, high-resolution sounds of the time one comes to grasp the intersections of digital everyday culture and music as well as the influence that technological developments have on the realities of the artists’ lives.

London-based producer and DJ @therealendgame is the latest signing to the Hyperdub label with his four-track EP entitled Flesh: a distillation of forward-thinking club music, drawing from genres such as grime, kizomba and dancehall, and converging into the experimental sounds of Bala Club; the collective that Endgame is part of, and is shaping a new underground sound in the capital. Endgame has worked along the frantic club track axis with his self-titled EP for Lisbon’s Golden Mist label in 2015 and this year’s Savage EP on New York’s Purple Tape Pedigree label, and with Flesh the lines are being sharply drawn – or slashed apart, perhaps. Heady machinations of ice-cold riddims, convulsing synths and face-melting vocal samples are executed with glee and originality. For his Choice Mix, Endgame lays it all out.

Marco Colocci (@queimada77) is an Italian producer and sound engineer based in Berlin. Learning how to play the contrabass and music theory has initiated the growth of his interest in the techniques of field recording and sound design, as well as his overall passion for electronic music. After self-releasing music during his teens, and later producing for Taiwanese artist Sabiwa from Chinabot, under the moniker Queimada he now presents a debut record coming out on Gin&Platonic.

Built around a concept proposed by Harvard professor E.O. Wilson, Eremocene depicts a future state of miserable epoch into which human species is slowly but steadily accelerating. Characterized by the existential & material isolation that comes from having calamitously extinguishing other forms of life on Earth while intrepidly fulfilling our immediate needs, the future labeled as The Age of Loneliness sees our identity completely transformed. 
On the record, Queimada explores precisely the conflict between the tempting ease and a pang of unconfessed guilt in an attempt to capture the ironical relationship they epitomize. The album represents an encounter between different techniques of granular synthesis and field recording. The encounter between the unstoppable and destructive, altogether resulting in a disruptive anthem of the intensifying burden of the postmodern times.

We're back at our GUESTMIX series with the last mix before summer vacations. Number 72 on the list, this episode has been recorded by the multidisciplinary artist, musician, DJ, and producer MAAY aka Mayte Stevani from Buenos Aires. Affiliated with the cutting edge Trrueno collective and label from Argentina's capital, she relocated to Berlin and participated with the crew on a tour around Europe which saw her perform and DJ in several venues in Prague, Brno, Lausanne, and many more.

MAAY's focus on music develops from influences from her Latin heritage and continues towards the latest hybrid styles of the contemporary club scene, also absorbing fragments of trance's melodic drive and incorporating eerie, dark themes from industrial music. In the around 35 minutes long selection we're presenting you today, the artist collects three unreleased tracks from her debut EP coming very soon plus a number of contributions from Trrueno members such as QEEI, Candie, and Bungalovv.

The mix crafts a thoughtful yet powerful listening experience, a perfect insight into MAAY's multifaceted artistic personality, suspended between delicate warmth and unrestrained emotions. As best described by her own words: "you are going to enter a wonderful land where your deepest emotions are allowed to play freely, and where darkness and colorful flashes will dance together until the end".

'Glacial Raid' is the latest release from La Vie C’est Facile on Creaked since the duo dropped their debut EP 'Fun Zone' back in the fall of 2015. Intricate, energetic and simply breathtaking, this EP travels further into the abyss, carefully crafted to deliver an experience that pulls the listener into the deep, dark sonic space the pair inhabit. 

La Vie C’est Facile have always taken their music further than most, resculpting aesthetics of early 2000s electronics and pushing beyond to the point where their composition sounds neither human nor machine-like. This is done to define their style and take listeners to the kinds of worlds evoked in futuristic, post-apocalyptic and dream-like scenes. 

Flirting with new technology and blending cutting drum patterns, icy melodies, humming bass-heavy sounds, trancey synths, vocal samples and experimental textures, 'Glacial Raid' arguably reflects their musical background, merged with modern genres such as instrumental grime, ‘post-club’ and urban influences. 

In the past, the duo have shown their passion for linking fashion with art, music and clothes. Their two self-released EPs were paired with a hoodie in 2015 and a silkscreened crewneck in 2017. With this new EP, it was obvious for them to continue in the same creative direction.
