Disquiet Junto Project 0614: Alternate Route
The Assignment: Do something you often do, but differently.

This is a slightly different take on last week’s project 1.

Step 1: Think of something related to making music that you do a lot.

Step 2: Think of an alternate way to do it that challenges your habits.

Step 3: Make a piece of music using the approach you thought of in Step 2.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0614” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0614” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation of a project playlist.

Step 3: Upload your tracks. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your tracks.

Today I tested and old sample library and a new one I've got to compare their sounds. I used the junto prompt as inspiration for my tests.

I'm a small time alchemist, so I didn't went too far into the transformation. I just wrote a simple piano piece, I submerged the piano piece into some some string orchestra as a potion (a plugin called Fragile String Evolutions) and you can hear the piano piece already evolving. Then the theme is played one last time on some distant, noisy string quartet and low strings (from Cinesamples' Quatre Harmonics).
There's some sort of hi pitched pump organ, that's a mistake (I forgot to mute a test track) , I decided to keep it there in the background.

A response to Disquiet Junto 0630: Creative Sufficiency, a challenge to choose, in advance, a limit on the number of pieces of equipment, instruments, software, or plugins that will be used in the piece.

I chose 9 components: Logic, keyboard controller, piano, bass, drum kit, 8th triplet stereo delay, 8th stereo delay, room reverb, and a StepFX plugin. The polyrhythms are the result of automating the send amounts to the auxiliary channels with the competing stereo delays.

I wanted the overall feel to be a film noir carnival chase scene played on a Korg M1.

I wanted to bring the number of tools I use to make a track down to one. As I don’t own a device that can produce AND record sound AND has a loudspeaker, my number is two: Monome Norns and a speaker. I made this with multiple layers of the Flora script I recorded over each other to tape. The first layer was a field recording I played from tape.

Disquiet0630 - Sufficiency For Two

The Assignment: Count your tools in advance of employing them.

The assignment prompted some — almost philosophical — questions about what I would consider a tool, or a piece of equipment, in my music making practice. 
I often work with complex effect chains in software, using different devices and plugins as building blocks for devices that I work and interact with — by means of custom-coded control mechanisms — as if they were a single, coherent thing. So would I consider such a device chain as a single piece of equipment? Or multiple pieces? Who decides what makes a thing a thing? The manufacturer? The user?
Trying not to get stuck (again) in overthinking, I opted — rather arbitrarily — for the manufacturer point of view: if it’s packaged as a thing, then let’s say its a thing.

For the piece, I was thinking I’d like to try and make something using a duduk I’d recently bought. The range of the duduk is somewhat limited (octave + 2 notes), so I thought I’d extend that range by using a granular delay effect that also does pitch shifting. 
So the piece would consist of two main pieces of equipment: duduk and granular delay. 
However, taking into account recording equipment, the DAW and some “utility” effects, I figured I’d definitely need a bunch more to actually make the piece. So I set 10 as a limit: this seemed doable, while still presenting something of a challenge. Which it did. I had to forego EQ (though using some filters inside other devices) and a dedicated limiter (re-using a compressor). Interesting… 

So here’s the list of 10:
Duduk, microphone, audio interface, headphones, DAW, granular delay, compressor, reverb, pitch shifting/stretching algorithm baked into the DAW, tuning device (duduk is quite hard to play in tune, especially for a novice like myself; having visual feedback of the frequency I was blowing was much needed).

I made a sculpture specifically for this project by collecting things on a walk and assembling them, then recording, on only one day.

I used the leftover objects to rub, scrape and clang. Everything you hear is litter.
