Disquiet Junto # 0737 suggested an anticipatory percussion piece. "Run, Theseus, Run" features hand-programmed drums and a manipulated field recording. When I say field recording, I mean a voice memo that my spouse accidentally sent me from the phone that was tucked away in their coat pocket. Well, now it's the sound of an angry minotaur.

Record a percussion piece that fills the listener with anticipation for what’s to come. Imply forthcoming spectacle, thrills, and excitement.

I was excited about this prompt since it called for percussion, and because it’s been a little while since I have done a Junto submission. I had a march kind of feeling in mind. Played some parts on the Roland edrums and recorded those sounds. Some from Orchestral percussion kit and some from a 70’s live kit. The gongs, chimes and bell percussion are from samples and sample instruments in Ableton. 
I was thinking about Olympics a bit, but after making a version of this for my Weekly Beats song this week, I realized it was the lunar new year this week, and it’s the year of the Fire Horse. I am now thinking these drums could be for an imaginary Fire Horse parade or ceremony.

I hope you all are well and creating music brings joy. Let’s hope this year has some positives ahead. Hard to be hopeful sometimes, but I try.

I don’t really pay much attention or have any particular belief around the lunar new year, but it’s fun to learn about. Reason to celebrate are always welcome. 

Here’s some info I found on the year of Fire Horse: 
Running from February 17, 2026, to February 5, 2027. Occurring once every 60 years (previously 1966), this rare year is characterized by intense energy, passion, and rapid transformation. It is known for fostering bold actions and independent, spirited, and sometimes volatile, outcomes. 
Key Characteristics and Predictions for 2026:
Energy & Pace: The year is expected to be fast-paced, impulsive, and highly active.
Symbolism: It symbolizes courage, ambition, and freedom, but may also bring challenges and volatility.
Advice: Focus on strategy over impulse, as this high-energy year can lead to success or burnout.
Cultural View: While sometimes seen as turbulent, it is also viewed as a time for significant, positive change. 
The last Fire Horse year was 1966, and the next will be 2086.

Fire Ceremony [disquiet0737]

In the Summer of 2025 I was travelling through the mountains of the North of Portugal and stayed for a few days in this small cottage in the middle of nowhere. The bed I had to sleep in was essentially precariously hanging from the ceiling, which caused me a great deal of anxiety, especially considering strong winds during the night and some kind of wood-chewing bug that could be heard in the dark silence.

But the worst of all was the fridge, just a few meters away from me. Every 40 minutes or so, the compressor in this very old fridge would trigger loudly and increase in intensity for 15 minutes before it would stop and remind me of what silence was.

Amazing landscape and beautiful hikes during the day, but dread and anxiety during the night. This piece tries to mimic the latter by using a recording of a compressor cycle from that fridge as a basis, and adding on several EMF recordings from the old electronics in the cottage.

It’s a long one, hope you enjoy it until the end.

Disquiet 0738 is an invitation to say something without words. I decided to try to say with music what I say when people ask me about the current polycrisis the world faces today.

My response may come across as full of dread (dreadful?) but hopefully I make sticking around to the end worth your while. Features intricately interwoven layers of Logic Alchemy soft synths, as well as sampled strings, horns, and orchestral percussion.

Paisley Pork Sunflower (disquiet0738)

Disquiet Junto 0739 invited us to consider the sympathetic resonance of vibrating strings.

I needed something with very resonant strings, so I reached for a guitar that I've never recorded before, a really nice Alvarez orchestra acoustic that I traded for last year. I recorded a few (okay, a lot of) layers of ebow, each track featuring a single note pattern played on an open string (with one cheat). I ran everything through a few pedals in various configurations: a Halo stereo delay, Walrus ARP-87 delay, Julia chorus, and Slo reverb. After about 6 layers of stacked and staggered ebow, I recorded a pass with plucked harmonics to add a rhythmic element without introducing any other instruments. I wanted the whole thing to be vibrating, analog strings.

I noticed when I listened to the pluck track in isolation, that I could hear the rest of the song playing in the background. The acoustic was picking up the sound from the studio monitors! How cool is that,

So I muted the plucks and recorded a fresh track of the playback recorded by holding the acoustic up directly in front of one of the monitors. I thought that circled back to the requirements neatly. I mixed the resonating strings back in with the other tracks, applied some stock Logic reverbs, and reported back here.

My contribution to Disquiet Junto 0739: Deepest Sympathies. 

The assignment: Make music focused on sympathetic strings, or something akin to them. Step 1: Consider this concept: When you play a single string on a guitar, or a harp, or another stringed instrument, other strings vibrate in harmony with it. Some instruments, such as the sitar, sarod, and the Hardanger fiddle, have sympathetic strings inherent in their design. This sort of sympathetic vibration is also the case with tuning forks. Step 2: Record a piece of music exploring, as much as possible, the sound of sympathetic strings unto themselves. This might be a practical experiment, trying to isolate the sounds, or a conceptual approach, using the idea as inspiration.

My process: This composition is based around a basic Karplus Strong patch on my modular synth based around the XAOC Devices Samarkanda module with each delay line cross-modulating each other. My initial idea was to build some kind of delicate generative piece, but that soon went out the window as I ended up overcooking everything with delay, distortion, and compression as usual... 

Influences: Mogwai, Fuck Buttons, Blanck Mass.

Process notes - 

It started as an idea of not using straight chords but rather have the notes play at different times and sort of create this elastic space where chord changes are up to the listener to feel.

It struck me that when I arrange for two melodic instruments, I sometimes make them only use exclusive notes of the harmony & I often drop in arpeggios too. I like a good Farfisa blast or a Teisco Del Ray gronk, but I often think that such harmonic richness is for special times and the question of "density?" should be answered, "less." So then, asking for polychords would be a pretty wild way to test that approach to density.

Then I thought, well, I'm going to use Live and my favorite generative things here. Then...let's skew the patterns a little - one track with 6 steps, one with 7 and the next with 8, then also using different time sigs on each and on and on and on. After this, I realized I didn't like the speed for too long and I slowed it down from 98 to like 30 and found 61 in the middle.  I dug into a few devices I haven't tried and came out with two stereo plucks and a bass that has its own thing going on that ends when it ends.

Touching The White (disquiet0740)

Disquiet Junto 0740 has us working with progressions of polychords, which are essentially two different triads stacked on top of one another.

I started out with software synths to explore ideas, doing several passes and trying out different parts. Once things settled I slowly replaced the placeholders with fresh performances using tweaked patches from the Argon 8M. Something analog wanted in, so I improvised a couple of parts on the Lakland bass, which I think came out sounding very nice. 

All the tracks, including percussion, were played live and unedited, no looping or quantizing. A smattering of compression, light reverb, and tasteful Chromaglow distortion; no real processing beyond that. Clean and simple.

Disquiet Junto prompt 0741 asked us to conjure the sounds of bells and buzzing wires. I have a great lo-fi church bell sample that I captured from a 1930s radio show on the Internet Archive, so I decided to build the piece around that. Both the deep drone and the repeating ringing figure are manipulations of that sample. I added some synthetic bells as well, including from Logic's bizarro FM/wavetable hybrid ES2. To round things out, I reached for the St Vincent electric guitar and my trusty ebow to add a few layers of singing wires.

The title comes from a Wikipedia article about the Bell Époque.
