Skyrim Soundtrack - Silent Footsteps (The Elder Scrolls V)

Disquiet Junto 0740 has us working with progressions of polychords, which are essentially two different triads stacked on top of one another.

I started out with software synths to explore ideas, doing several passes and trying out different parts. Once things settled I slowly replaced the placeholders with fresh performances using tweaked patches from the Argon 8M. Something analog wanted in, so I improvised a couple of parts on the Lakland bass, which I think came out sounding very nice. 

All the tracks, including percussion, were played live and unedited, no looping or quantizing. A smattering of compression, light reverb, and tasteful Chromaglow distortion; no real processing beyond that. Clean and simple.

I have limited knowledge about music theory so I’m not sure whether this comes close to satisfying the prompt but here’s my contribution anyway. One area I’ve always been interested in is the correlation of various modes to moods or feelings. For this, I tried to combine two triad chord progressions to create an evolving ambient drone in D Lydian. Don’t know if I succeeded 100% but I'm mostly happy with how it sounds.

I used a Soma Lyra 8 to create two triads using six of the eight metal sensor pairs. Tuning notes on this synth is unpredictable, imprecise and has a tendency to drift, so the final chords might not be accurate. I manually tweaked the parameters as the drone progressed. Lydia Moves On [disquiet0740]

This track is an endeavour to create an ambient piece using polychords. These are distributed among different sounds and appear in the middle section, where the trees' dreams become slightly uneasy before resolving again into pleasant dreams feeling like birds in their crowns.

Dreams of Trees are like Birds (Disquiet0740)

This track is based on a field recording made during a rainstorm on our balcony. The bells belong to the nearby church and were captured at one point in the recording. The drones were developed from the sound of a plane passing overhead.
These sounds were turned into instruments played by the generative MIDI sequencer Transition while the rain and birdsong recording plays.

This track was inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project, which proposed combining bells and drones.

Electronic ambient / abstract experiment.

One track of real bells from my collection layered with Oberheim synth emulations: two bell-like synth patches and several drifting drones, both low and high.

A slightly unstable arpeggiator adds an off-tempo, almost tachycardic pulse beneath the texture.

Created during the afternoon of March 12th in Paris, France.

Disquiet Junto prompt 0741 asked us to conjure the sounds of bells and buzzing wires. I have a great lo-fi church bell sample that I captured from a 1930s radio show on the Internet Archive, so I decided to build the piece around that. Both the deep drone and the repeating ringing figure are manipulations of that sample. I added some synthetic bells as well, including from Logic's bizarro FM/wavetable hybrid ES2. To round things out, I reached for the St Vincent electric guitar and my trusty ebow to add a few layers of singing wires.

The title comes from a Wikipedia article about the Bell Époque.
