This song is based on a poem by extraordinary Zen poet Shinkichi Takahashi, from Triumph of the Sparrow as translated by Lucian Stryk. I ended up taking the words in a little different direction though, because that's what happens when you write a song.

Frozen Cittern

A remake of a track from round about 2008 / 2009 written with David Nicholls or Amber Dave.  Its from the sessions that spawned two tracks this one and Hey Now Sister.  
This one as the title suggests was quite dominated by Dave playing the guitar with an ebow, obviously inspired by R.E.M. and Ebow the letter.  
My version always managed to get a good groove going on the original. David even said he liked it at the time anyway spin forward into 2025. I’ve kept that groove, trimmed the whole track down a bit. 
The original didn’t have singing, but did have a recording of a hypnosis session that I’d had that year.  I’d  cut and pasted bits of the session into into the track. I’ve only kept one bit of those soothing words in this remake - right at the end, but I have added some actual singing vocals.

Geordie Haley is a composer, improviser, educator and guitarist. Contributing to the creative music scenes of Fredericton NB, Toronto ONT, and now Halifax NS, Geordie has been presenting songs, rhythm based compositions and improvised music for over 25 years. 
Since returning to the Maritimes Geordie has been a featured artist in concert and festival programs by creative music presenters Upstream Music, Suddenly Listen, Canadian Music Center, The Motion Ensemble, Jazz East, Scotia Festival, Shattering the Silence Festival, and the Harvest Jazz Festival.

THRENODIES, a work for 4 musicians and 3 dancers based on Haley’s original compositions in collaboration with dancer/choreographer Susanne Chui was featured a during the 2012 Halifax Jazz Festival.

As an educator Geordie continues his practice at the NSCC Waterfront Campus Music Arts Department, teaching private lessons and instructing ensembles.
As a bandleader Geordie’s music can be heard at cd baby and on CBC RADIO 3.

These tracks are songs or contemplations or guided meditations that come from exploring present moment experience. The songs of course speak for themselves. As far as the meditations, what you discover in these explorations might be very different than what I’m suggesting, and it's important for you to honor that, and follow it wherever it takes you.

When we discover something to be true then it has the possibility of changing us in a fundamental way. It has the possibility of awakening us to a new way of being. That's what counts. In a moment of discovery there’s often the feeling of surprise, even astonishment. 

Some of the meditations are directed toward people who are new to exploring life in this way, and some are directed to the old dogs like me who have been wandering these woods for a long time. Hopefully someday I will find a way to make it clear which is which, though I'm not sure it matters.

And as to the title of this page, Essence of Awareness is a small online group of friends exploring together this precious human life. It's about making discoveries and awakening to real freedom, real love, and real happiness. What else could we want?

I am a minimalist. There are no computers, other than a drag and drop from a digital 8-track. This music is not made for phone speakers. I release the songs on SoundCloud as I record them. Once an album is done, I release the songs in album form on Bandcamp.

Alex Summerlin is an eclectic alternative and folk-rock musician who has played music professionally for over a decade around the Little Rock, AR, and Nashville, TN areas. Originally hailing from Bryant, AR, Alex was drawn to music at a young age by the generations of working musicians in his family.  He started playing cover music in local bars and clubs as young as 12 years old, playing music steadily throughout his teens and twenties.

Alex started writing music in college as a passion project to break out of the limitations he felt playing cover songs. There, he met fellow long-time musicians and collaborators Rick Scott and Chad Terrell, and they joined Alex to write and produce songs from their home studio in Maumelle, AR (WaterWoods Studio). 

Since then, Alex, Chad, and Rick have continued writing and producing songs that reflect influences from several genres and three generations of music they wish to share with anyone who will listen.

Nothence is a personal independent alternative-rock music project, started by Fabio Scagliola in Lugano, Switzerland, in 2009.

The latest single The cost of integrity was released on May 11, 2025, and, just like the albums, it is available on the major music streaming services.

The instrumental post-rock studio album Proposed tracks for unproduced movies was released on December 1, 2018. Fabio had previously released three other studio albums: his favorite one Post mortem memento vivere (September 1, 2016), Public static void (March 21, 2014), and Portrayed by a blind painter (October 1, 2012).

The singles Welcome to my world and Tired were released on Jul 7, 2022 and on Aug 5, 2022 respectively.

Everything here is created, recorded and mixed on an IPad Pro using AUM.

I use GeoShred to play everything that is not generated or sequenced.
