Duca comes again, what is going on? With Black Bones and Talking Drums incoming, the label returns to its various artists format with another 4 guest editors cutting and sample, looping and extending for fun. 2023 seems the year of the Bianco.
Italo king return, warm and glowing Franz Scala (Slow Motion / Bahnsteig 23) offering the slow build new wave funk of For Me to start any party.
The mysterious CW is next. Who? One of the most respected collectors and DJs on the London scene, one third of the Beauty & The Beat party and occasionally known to offer exceptional afro & souk edits for the floor, here delivering a twist and shake change up for Duca.
Our choice here is backwards of Red Axes, Der Sexa’s - Gabi Plane follows on the flip, another unknown maybe or maybe not. Why not take a look in the mirror for the denouement and let the king of a groove slice any dancefloor. 
To finish, Manchester’s finest editors Talking Drums return with a left field bomba in DMNB. We’re not sure what it means but it’s twisted and perfecto.

As we approach the threshold leading us back to the Black Lodge on our transformative 8th journey, we are escorted through and beyond the mystical portal by the vigorous and fierce forces of Sneaker. Portrait in House is a collection of 3 resonant works, which are unified into a singular vision within its uncanny language that is rooted deeply in the foundations of Jak, New Beat, EBM, and Wave. Existing inside the liminal spaces of where light meets dark, we are presented with a documentation of dissonance and harmony. 

We begin our voyage with Jihad, a sluggish and slogging piece that unforgivingly drags us through the grime and the dirt in a ritualistic fashion that would have the ghost of Georges Bataille dancing in circles. Voices call out and howl into the dark as the drum patterns of the 707 rhythmically grasps onto its anarchic components. In the dark, we can see the light beyond the known universe. In the words of Sneaker “The name is not our message, but a document of an evident, traditional concept in (y)our world.”

As we find ourselves sprawled out on the ground following the 1st sonic stanza, a menacing voice bellows and warns that this is a Sax Track. Referencing Chicago icon Lil Louis, this work juxtaposes classical elements of house music together with the bare knuckled spirit of Jak. A magical spell led by disharmonious Portasound FM keys in conversation with a teetering sub bass, where at its core, this plus this, equals something that is uniquely familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. A number fit for any uncanny ritual that will fall under the night sky. 

Bringing our cosmic procession to a close we pick up the pace with a commanding number titled, Dance On, a no holds barred work that will possess your soul in the name of Jak. Flangers wail unforgivingly alongside a pulsating 101, as samples of the human voice are chopped up and arranged into a conversation that hypnotically calls for our bodies to be transformed into soft machines, while powered by ceremonious motions that are generated from the liberating process of ritual movement. We command you to dance!

From Sweden with Italo to Dresden with love. Stockholm's DJ City drops his first release on Dresden's Uncanny Valley with the COSMICOMICS EP, a 100% fun record for all the senses, deeply inspired by Italo Calvino's iconic short story collection.

COSMICOMICS borrows its name from a collection of short stories written by Italian author Italo Calvino, first published in Italian in 1965. The stories have inspired DJ City to a record that aesthetically draws from 80s Italo Disco and 70s science fiction films. In the book, each story is based on a scientific fact about the world and the cosmos whilst using fiction to ask how we understand it. Where Calvino's stories are comical and absurd, DJ City surrenders to the sublime and romantic and moves further into the metaphysical world that Calvino created to come up with three energetic and melodic tracks bursting heavily with fantasy and drama. Deeply rooted in dance music’s history, they shine with Hi-NRG-vibes, strict dancefloor commitment and little easter eggs like that Drexciya-reference in COSMICOMICS.

The cover of the record is a painting from 2020 by Swedish artist Jens Fänge called THE INN. We see a man in front of the entrance to a Mediterranean-style building and a woman in a window on the upper floor. The picture seems to have been broken up into several dimensions, and abstract details make it difficult for the viewer to know exactly what and when the scene is taking place. When shown in Shanghai, the painting was censored by government agents and had to be taken down. A testament to the power of the image. Perhaps it shows our main character, perhaps it shows us the author or the artist. Depending on who listens, who reads and who looks, a multitude of universes open.

In a small gastro studio selling fermented products, a biological revolution takes place. The good bacteria stop working and no more products turn sour. Danilas, the manager of the tannery, who has spent his whole life among the bacteria, suddenly hears their voice. They are angry. Bacteria are fed up with exploitation, want equal rights, and threaten the world: "People need bacteria, and we don't need people."

The fermentation process is vital for humans, but the rights of bacteria sound absurd. Will Danilas be able to make people sympathize with another species – an alien species – and its needs? First he will have to convince two members of the tannery syndicate, Fatima and Jie, who take a much more pragmatic view of the crisis. This story is a test of empathy for humans.

@lorenzomorresi is a man constantly on the hunt for new sounds. Always listening, gathering, and curating fresh music from around the world—whether on the road riding his motorcycle or from his home in Italy. A collaborative artist, Lorenzo loves to work with the incredible array of musicians he meets on his musical journeys. His style blends the crossroads of jazz, funk, experimental, and electronic, with a few broken beats thrown in for good measure.

The Nonsense EP, released 16th April on his new label Minus Me Plus World, is a prime example of how Lorenzo Morresi blends sounds from a multitude of genres—a beautiful symbiosis of organic and mechanical, analogue and digital.

Nonsense is an EP designed for clubs, full of warm distortions, analogue synthesizers, and a whole range of electronic music techniques—both old and new.

“Tucu Taca”, fittingly released as a single on 1st April (April Fool’s Day), kicks off the festival of Nonsense. As you press play, the track begins with the whispered vocal, “Tucu Taca, Tucu Taca, Tucu Taca”. These lyrics may sound like nonsense, but they serve as a classic warm-up exercise to practice rhythm for funkier guitar numbers.

Before your ears have even had a chance to warm up, Lorenzo hits you with an array of percussion—timbals, cymbals, and repeniques—combining for an exceptional clave, then kicking into an electro-samba extravaganza that Liquid Liquid would be proud of.
