These collections will see Cord Labuhn open up a selection of his personal folders and archives to give listeners an intimate insight into his mindset and creative processes whilst simultaneously showcasing the talents of some his closest friends and supporters. After a lifetime of crate digging and absorbing music, OUTTAKES sees a rejuvenated Cord go back to his roots and follows a rekindling of his love affair with Hip Hop that saw him hit the studio with iconic names such as KRS-One, Masta Ace and Jeru The Damaja.  Coupled with the recent geographical displacement of Robosonic - fate and the Atlantic Ocean have separated the pairing, with Sacha now residing in Los Angeles whilst Cord continues to live and work in Berlin - the time was right to think outside of the box with the creation of an outlet for these evolutionary ‘works in progress’. 

Aiming to channel the spirit of the memories that helped him form his cultural and musical identity, OUTTAKES won’t be limited to sonic offerings and will include photographs and video footage in its bid to tackle ‘real life matters’. What Cord means by this is open for interpretation but one meaning he attributes to the phrase is it being a metaphor for physical products you can touch, trade and give-away. Known for his affection for towels  - stick with us here - he’s also applied his mind to the invention of a towel/scarf hybrid which he calls PUNCHI and uses and distributes around the necks of likeminded people and wet cats.

CORD LABUHN / OUTTAKES / Season 1 - Episode 1-12

SLEEP OUT
Dear tired, sleepless friend, I’ve laid down ‘SLEEP OUT’ as ground zero (#000) of my new project and creative hub OUTTAKES. A golden-tinged, therapeutic 3 hour mixtape depicting the most sleepy, meditative and cosy curation of tracks. Featuring works from the likes of Prefuse73, Burial, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jon Hopkins, Robag Wruhme, Stimming, Nils Frahm, and Sigur Ros to name but a few this is a mix to happily get lost within; 48 tracks to soundtrack the most libidinous of moods.

Two of my own productions ‘Gone Love’ & ‘Unter Deck’ bookend this mixtape, which were tailored to stand alongside some of the most beautiful tracks by artists, friends and labels that I truly respect and who have all been a source of inspiration for me. I’m excited to present their work in a such personal space. Further original production work will follow in future editions of OUTTAKES with this set of selections serving as a serene opening chapter and a statement of intent of things to come. Researched and road-tested over the last few years, the end result is the product of a tireless labour of love and stands in stark contrast musically to the majority of my previous artistic endeavors. After playing hundreds of house and techno gigs in over 40 countries with ROBOSONIC, this dedicated mix represents the very opposite of physical music, redressing the balance I would seek to attain as a tool to relax whenever I needed to unwind. Thus it was only natural for OUTTAKES to start at the lowest level possible… horizontal business.  Go share this heartfelt mixtape far and wide, but most importantly hand it to those who deserve sweet dreams and a good rest.

The OUTTAKES series starts at the lowest level, horizontal business. I got lost in a stoner loop long time ago, when I recorded some piano through guitar effect pedals, and flipping samples in the NI Maschine. I knew it would become more or less this piece, but it took me a light year to finish it off. I did work on it often as the last thing of the day to calm down after producing Robosonic house & techno. I would become tired immediately and leave the track alone after just a few minutes zoning - or maybe recording a take playing my Mom's accordeon or so, adding a subtle layer...I thought it was a good sign that it made me tired and lazy and I didn’t want to lose that approach by overproducing or overthinking. But I knew I wanted to have this either as the first or last track in the SLEEP OUT mixtape (www.sleep.outtakes.co), so I had to put elements in order at some point.

Years ago I made a mixtape called “Heart Ship Home” and produced the opener ‘Heartships’ myself, which was dedicated to my beloved girlfriend. Over the many years we spent together the term ‘Go Love’ became a symbol for giving each other space and individual freedom based on deepest trust, to go abroad, travel, to worship life and love to the max without losing the feeling of a safe home and being rooted. Last year - really just when the track was finally arranged and produced and hence, also when SLEEP OUT was finished with its last missing ingredient - this tune & title became a symbol for that whole story, as my love had suddenly gone. Spending most of her time in a whole different place and space, allowing too much of a contradiction, and love to tear us apart. Aua.
So I had compiled the most cosy selection of music to rock myself to sleep - which was the initial idea: a tool for whenever i have to rest between club gigs, airports, hotels, trains - but I became awfully insomniac over the situation. I felt I had to wait with this release (relief!) until I had recaptured my ability to rest in peace. Meditation, rational reflection and an incredible amount of appreciation and love by my realest allies was key. You know who you are, dream on.

"The first time i was in Lebanon for a Robosonic show I got invited by Sleiman & Tarek aka Three Machines. Not only gifted musicians, producers & DJs but also most lovely habibis - yalla - shukran - شكرا.  So we met once again in Dubai after a gig making music, exchanging ideas - not doing anything forbidden, لريال مدريد. 
On another tour some things were recorded in their studio in Beirut (...plus some of the strings were recorded in Jordania, to keep it real). More collaborations are waiting in the pipeline, but this third episode of Outtakes is about اصنع الحب لا الحرب, i guess." C:

"With one of my favourite studio wizzards and multi-task-instrumentalists Jan Weigel I recorded some random samples from old reel-to-reel tapes of his father...we also used the tape machine to record drums and piano onto the magnetic tapes for unique texture, saturation, distortion and low fidelity. Kloing. Chzzz. Nnnpf.
When i went through all the stuff later picking the most useful bits & samples, I found that little piece of vocals in between the solo guitar sessions of Wolfgang Weigel and this beat fell into place. Episode 4 is an unexpected family affair." C:

„This one is dedicated to all the towels in the world. Favourite fabric of all times, multifunction. Even better if you turn it into a scarf. This is what Kim and I would do after some serious sweating on stage and dancefloors. Fresh new hybrid called Punchi was born. Introduced to the world as a @robosonic merchandise, I really wanted to produce some dedicated punchipunchi-music and weave a whole story around it. Honestly I've had a hard time convincing Sacha to join the fun, he wasn't very fond of strange ideas, that would distract me from making music and become a pro in what we were trying to be: DJ-producers in the field of dance music, house, techno, bass. 
Anyway, I couldn’t stop playing the towel game, spreading the love, no sweat. Until today - via hundreds of stages, thousands of people’s necks, along the beaches, in the gym or any other wet hot situation you can imagine. So i made an Outtakes-version of the track formerly called „Punchi Punchi“, i stripped it down to my initial ideas, sample workouts and vocal recordings and rebuilt it half-time, laid back. Still looking for a vocalist to add some terry towel praising lines on top of it. Just saying. Maybe this is it, done. Aiming to channel the spirit of the memories that helped him form his cultural and musical identity, OUTTAKES won’t be limited to sonic offerings and will include photographs and video footage in its bid to tackle ‘real life matters’. What Cord means by this is open for interpretation but one meaning he attributes to the phrase is it being a metaphor for physical products you can touch, trade and give-away. Known for his affection for towels  - stick with us here - he’s also applied his mind to the invention of a towel/scarf hybrid which he calls PUNCHI and uses and distributes around the necks of likeminded people and wet cats.

'OUT#007 is the opener of the „Heart Ship Home“ mixtape. I remember this was one of the first beats I ever made on the Native Instruments Maschine. Also I wasn’t using my turntables a lot those days, until I got myself an NI Z2 vinyl control battle mixer - finally - that would let me scratch up any sound I had on my computer - like I used to do with vinyls in my early days of DJing. In the Robosonic productions you hear that especially in „Good Old Feel“ feat. Masta Ace, „Macho Madness“ or „Dedicated“, but in Heartships I almost overdid it with all those micro samples. :) I’ve had a few different artwork options for this one, but I went the retro-romantic route: This ship was anchored no 200m away from the place where I wrote Heartships, just someday it disappeared. Fun fact: While I took the picture a Mariachi group was playing and shooting a video there in front, a year later I found out a friends father is member of that band! Saludos.“ C:

'Happy to have Jason Filos on board in the first season of OUTTAKES. He once came up with a fly sketch called 'Fliege'. I eventually took some things out, put it in my brand new teleporter - just like in the 1980s trash movie - and the Insection was happening. Easy as that.' C:

'I wrote this as a second theme song of the HEART SHIP HOME mixtape some time ago. I played my mum's accordion over a broken beat, chopped a whole bunch of organic samples, used local field recordings of swans and seagulls and even played around with eunuch voicings and a pitchtuner. My favourite engineer Jesco Lohan, responsible for the mixdown, kept it sounding warm and round, creatively chaotic and neat in equal measures - it actually feels like home.' C:

'Goethe Institut and the Berlin Club Commission invited me for a show, talks, studio and DJ workshops to Yangon, capital of Myanmar - the country formerly known as Burma. Lucky me could travel with Lutz Leichsenring, Sascha Disselkamp and Lola Luc, get inspired and meet local talent through musician and social worker Darko C. 
One day my mission was to find the 'D.I.Y Studio' run by Logn Logne with only a little piece of paper with an address in Burmese signs. Adventure time. 
I met a bunch of local musicians, young producers and writers like i2, Hein Htet (MJN), Right D and T-Zin for a little session. I basically started to cut up a beat out of the field recordings I've made the days before and showed the guys how I make use of found sound sometimes to weave aural memories into music. 
They jumped on the groove and came up with different ideas on their instruments and computers. From this jam I took a bunch of loops and sounds home, where I also checked through all my recorded mobile phone video bits. I thought of a piece, that works as a little self-explanatory report what happened on the whole impressive journey where I could learn a lot about high life, low life and freedom - as I basically do all the time making a living with music I love.
Many thanks to everyone I met over there in Myanmar, the crew from the Berlin homebase, Max H. Raeder for the video editing and the Punchi towelscarf to prove useful in tropical heat. Yangon State is the finale of OUTTAKES season one. To be continued. 1love ' C:

„For many years I was on the grind with my man Sacha Robotti. We met around 2004 through a mutual friend, Matz, who became something like the godfather of Robosonic because he purposely placed us together at a dinner table - and probably fed us some doobies for dessert.
Matz’ later child was named after our later first original release „Yasmin“. To survive and somehow make a living based on our love for music the three of us formed a company offering our services to corporate clients. That wasn’t always the easiest and most fulfilling but still it paid our rents or loans and meals a few times before we were welcome and somewhat respected in the international DJ-producer circuit.
Back then another friend of mine was creative director with a reknowned agency and asked me for a commissioned work for a car company, which short after had it’s ‚big‘ moment in a presentation at the Detroit Motor Show. To support my gang I involved Sacha, Matz and my favourite mixdown engineer Jesco Lohan in the project and paid top dollar out of my budget. Unfortunately the client wanted me to completely overdraw the production for wow-effects on car journalists at this trade show.
Now when I went through my folders looking for candidates and stories for the OUTTAKES series, I used some of this piece and came up with this stripped down version. 
Big ups and co-production credit to Sacha, who in 2015 decided to leave Berlin and me behind - as our dual ambitions for Robosonic - to focus on his own solo path which he had prepared for years. 
I was sad and paralysed for a moment, but had to accept and support his decisions and manner. I finally decided to keep Robosonic alive with fresh new energy, production work, worldwide touring and unaltered love. Good luck and nothing but the best for his grind and happiness. Peace OUT#008!“ C:

Exxxtraordinary experience with some real rap and dirty disco diesdas from my Cord Labuhn crate, only the opener is an upcoming @robosonic joint on OUTTAKES.  Many came dressed to kill, others didn't wear anything at all. ^^ I took advantage of my towelling fetish, so it felt pretty natural roaming around like it was happening in my bedroom...C°°

'eclectic line'

The spring/summer collection 2013 'eclectic line' of 'Isabell de Hillerin' creates a fashion-conscious fusion between the Moldovan handmade art and contemporary fashion design.
Traditional embroidery and hand-woven fabrics are reinterpreted in her creations, with the aim to counter the current loss of culture and push these highly skilled craftswomen by implementing their cultural skills in a modern fashion context. A combination of nostalgia and modern design gives the fashion label its own identity.

The fashion label ‚isabell de hillerin’ was founded in Berlin 2009 and stands for elegance, structured cuts and details which remind of an old tradition.

This work was conceived through the Tandem programme which is supported by the European Commission Culture programme, Robert Bosch Stiftung and delivered by MitOst and the European Cultural Foundation. It was additionally supported by the Open Society Foundations with contribution of the arts and culture programme of Budapest.

In cooperation with Tatiana Popa/ Casa Parinteasca, Moldova

The Autumn/Winter 2013 collection ‘quiet’ by isabell de hillerin is
inspired by the vision of preserved fragments in deep ice.
Long-forgotten traditional elements are hidden like fossils. Barely
visible, but once captured in marine blue water, the ice reveals
frozen moments like black stones and green moss.
Moldovan embroidery and Romanian fabrics appear in contemporary
fashion, forming a new identity. Quiet. Elegant.
The label isabell de hillerin stands for elegance, structured cuts and
details which remind of an old tradition.
In recent years the ancient fabrics industry in Romania and Moldova
has been driven to near extinction. To strengthen this traditional
artisan industry, her label works with local Romanian and Moldovan manufacturers
to support the production of handmade materials. Her aim
is to push these highly skilled craftsmen by publicizing and utilizing their
cultural skills in a way that hasn’t been done before.

Cartoon life - At six years old, CORD LABUHN had his first real career aspiration : becoming an ‘inventor’. Or space traveller. At least working in some kind of laboratory. Hence he became a producer of beats, tunes, records, imagery & merch - and toured the whole planet to play music for the most spaced out...

Earlier, when the ghost of Jimi Hendrix jumped out of his parents record collection and passionately promoted the guitar as the weapon of choice for a leftist punk, folk, if not eurodance infected teenager of the 90s, the piano and his sister’s drumset would have to step back for a while. 

A few years later when TV was still the thing and gaming consoles like PS1 were battling N64, Cord the Beatmaker was rather staring at tiny AKAI S2000, MPC and CRT displays, head-nodding, turning the jogwheels, dreaming of a second turntable to complete his DJ setup - the true school, golden age hiphop way. Next mission - still as a school kid - was a self-released vinyl record with international distribution through a self-founded label – learning everything from scratch, only a few years before DJing went 99,9% digital, crazy fast and globalised anyway. 

To date, his longest running project is ROBOSONIC, which was formed as a DJ-producer duo together with Sacha Robotti over 10 years ago. A while after their unconventional, free-spirited debut album „Sturm und Drang“ (2007) they took the world by storm with a string of popular tunes and remixes that went into the crates of tens of thousands of DJs worldwide and made it to top spots in the infamous Beatport charts (“Worst Love”, “The Edge” 2012, “La Fique” 2013, “House Music” 2015, “Rise” 2016). With releases on labels like Defected, Toolroom, Get Physical, Diynamic, Stil vor Talent, Deep Dish’s Yoshitoshi, Nervous or lately Mother Recordings, ROBOSONIC became an authentic figurehead for something dubbed “Golden Era House” (Juice Magazine). Not only because Cord was convincing real rap icons like Masta Ace, Jeru the Damaja and KRS-One to collaborate on house tracks, but also because ROBOSONIC remixed legends like Todd Terry, Arthur Baker, Kerri Chandler and Eddie Amador.
Today, after his partner emigrated to the US, Cord the DJ is playing most of the ROBOSONIC shows alone. The house & techno driven sets and releases under this moniker are internationally recognised and performances in 40+ countries (and counting) reflect the universal appeal of a trademark sound they unleashed into the world. And with a string of new remixes and releases it seems that he won’t stop shedding club sweat and tears.
For 2017 Cord Labuhn has redefined his structures and launches a series called OUTTAKES. The label and collaborative hub serves primarily as a studio-to-listeners feed – to pilot an own musical direction, independent from A&R decisions, laws of the market – out of the box. A conscious counterpart and soulful antidote to the dance music business with its particular formulas. 
The zero point (#000) of the OUTTAKES series is the ‘SLEEP OUT’ mixtape - a carefully composed 3 hour set indulging in the tones and frequencies of sleep, representing this important human state in musical form –  horizontal business. Two of his own productions ‘Gone Love’ & ‘Unter Deck’, which bookend this mixtape, are being released through the label as a wake-up call, followed by hypnotic beat science, hiphop infused electronica, songs, fragments, field recordings and probably some dance music in the future, that would not fit under any other label than: OUTTAKES.
