It’s hard to say exactly where inspiration begins.
When we connect the memories of our past with the creative impulses of the
present, the connective tissue that links the two is really the essence of our
autobiography.
Perhaps it’s the sound of a train, or the flash of lightning across the night sky or
the sepia-tinged hue of a late summer day at the beach.
Or maybe it’s a pink ukulele.
For singer/songwriter Susie, it was exactly that.
The L.A.-born musician has a specific memory centered around that very symbol
which may perfectly explain the origin story of her creative life.
“Growing up, my dad always had music around us,” she recalls. “I vividly
remember the pink ukulele and our electric piano that he would play while my
sisters and I danced around.”
All that dancing, all that electric piano and of course, that pink ukulele have
helped produce one of the most exciting young voices to come around in quite
some time.
A soulful singer with preternatural songwriting instincts, Susie’s debut album
Blonde Wave​ marks the arrival of a rare and special talent.
Written and recorded over the last two years, ​Blonde Wave​ finds the 15-year old
Susie exploring emotional themes of love, feeling lost and finding place in what
can sometimes be a confusing world.
“I want people to know that my songs are an open window into my life,” she says.
“I poured so many feelings from the last two years into them. I think I’m going
through a lot of the same things as other people my age.”
Emotive tracks like the windswept piano ballad “Winter In Southern California,”
the sweeping pop of “Dream On Darling” or the open-wounded beauty of
“Twinkle” demonstrate a wide sonic pallet that evince a staggering artistic range.
Meanwhile, “Bummer Summer” might be one of the best songs of the year—a
wildly inventive number that showcases the ups and downs of a teenager coming
of age. The track is a time capsule into the life of a fourteen year old. With

mesmerizing percussion and a huge layered chorus in the finale, Susie tells the
story of her ​bummer summer​ with the aplomb of a musical veteran.
Falling somewhere between the work of Kate Nash and Regina Spektor, Susie is
influenced by everyone from Frank Ocean and The Beach Boys to Janelle
Monae and Rex Orange County. As for where her tastes derived, she says:
“Growing up I listened to my parents music. It was a blend of the Beatles, Fiona
Apple and 90’s and early 2000’s hits. When I got older I started finding my music
for myself.”
Embarking on an artistic journey is a tricky one for a high school student who’s
trying to walk the tightrope between the creative life and the social and academic
rigors of high school.
“It was really tricky to balance music with high school life,” Susie agrees. “I care a
lot about my grades and my social life and taking so much time to record was
detrimental to both of those things. My dad (Honey Cane frontman Jerry
Slavonia) was the one that kept pushing me to finish and I give him a lot of credit for why we did."
