It was a few weeks ago that we went up to the Jack and Jill Windmills. A walk in the downs before seeing our oldest off again.  I couldn’t find any music to fit the little bit of video I shot. I tried a bunch of stuff. Drones, chimes, synths, acoustic guitars. Nothing felt gentle enough. Nothing was filling that soft happy lamenting place that was that morning. Seeing him grow, then gone. So full of love but wishing time would freeze forever. I know it can’t. I don’t even want it to. Not really.  But I found that inexpressible feeling come back as I watched the Ryuchi Sakamoto movie “Opus”. Just a man, old, unwell, knowing the end is near,  sat playing at a piano, playing his favourites from a long illustrious career. It’s a beautiful film. And it got me sitting at the piano again. The guitars and synths could take a break. I needed to work out how he makes things sound so pretty, simple, tender, full of longing and calm.  I wanted to be able to play like this. I wanted to conjure the fleeting nature of cherry blossom. I wanted to make it last whilst knowing that it couldn’t.  To cherish the cherry blossom for its brief bloom and Ryuchi Sakamoto for being able to evoke feelings that could never be put into words. i sat down last night and played the music you hear now.  it just came out as i loosely played something similar in tone and harmony to Merry Xmas Mr Laurence. And then i added a bit of birdsong that I recorded on a walk to the @ecomusicologyproject. It felt finished.

This set of SWWs was written in memory of a wonderful singer, teacher and friend, Diana Walkley. In essence this is a fantasia on the Alleluia motif sung by the Angel in Elgar's masterpiece, The Dream of Gerontius; when I conducted this in Wells Cathedral, Diana was that angel and the top A on the final Alleluia was one of the great notes of my musical life
