Eine Reise

It was a few weeks ago that we went up to the Jack and Jill Windmills. A walk in the downs before seeing our oldest off again.  I couldn’t find any music to fit the little bit of video I shot. I tried a bunch of stuff. Drones, chimes, synths, acoustic guitars. Nothing felt gentle enough. Nothing was filling that soft happy lamenting place that was that morning. Seeing him grow, then gone. So full of love but wishing time would freeze forever. I know it can’t. I don’t even want it to. Not really.  But I found that inexpressible feeling come back as I watched the Ryuchi Sakamoto movie “Opus”. Just a man, old, unwell, knowing the end is near,  sat playing at a piano, playing his favourites from a long illustrious career. It’s a beautiful film. And it got me sitting at the piano again. The guitars and synths could take a break. I needed to work out how he makes things sound so pretty, simple, tender, full of longing and calm.  I wanted to be able to play like this. I wanted to conjure the fleeting nature of cherry blossom. I wanted to make it last whilst knowing that it couldn’t.  To cherish the cherry blossom for its brief bloom and Ryuchi Sakamoto for being able to evoke feelings that could never be put into words. i sat down last night and played the music you hear now.  it just came out as i loosely played something similar in tone and harmony to Merry Xmas Mr Laurence. And then i added a bit of birdsong that I recorded on a walk to the @ecomusicologyproject. It felt finished.

I've been playing piano for overr 40 years, and electric piano for more than 30.

- I practice classical pieces that I want to perform, and upload recordings with fewer mistakes.  
- I record adlib/improvisations whenever I feel like playing simply moving my hands.

I started with a toy piano.  
More than 40 years ago, my grandfather gave me a mahogany Kawai upright piano.
I studied piano with Ms. Kazuko Makishima from the age of 5 to 17.  She was an elderly woman in my neighbourhood who wore colorful clothes and loved the Electone as well as the piano.  
In high school, I played electric bass in a rock band with friends in a club.  (I haven't played bass since then, though.)

I entered university (not a music school or major) and joined a piano club called Piano-no-kai.  The members, friends enjoyed playing the piano and explored  classical pieces, popular, jazz, and more - each in their own way.  


After graduation, I bought my first electric piano to play at night after work.  (My mahogany Kawai piano was sold.)
I've replaced electric pianos due to broken parts.  
My current one is the third one.  I've been playing it for over ten years with a repair.


I began learning jazz because I wanted to know music theory. (I didn't - and still don't -  play jazz well.)  
First, I learned with Mr. Shu Sugawara, who works as a writer and a translator. 
Later, I learned with Ms. Miki Hayasaka at the Kawai music school in Omotesando.  I learned theory and co-created a little music piece.
I also joined a small free jazz band, where one of my colleagues from work was playing.  

After that, again I returned to classical piano, studying with Ms. Yukiko Asami at the music school.  
She taught me how to play with more fluency and elegance, and with greater attention to detail than I had learned before.

After that, I studied a little harmony and counterpoint on my own.

I enjoy watching anime and movies with my husband.

I often use my hands, body - sensing, adjusting, etc.
