"When I get asked to do mixes I often take that as an opportunity to put together a selection of my favourite pieces from a specific era, genre or composer. In this case I compiled a number of my favourite Japanese electronic tracks as I have been listening to a lot of that stuff for the past year or so."

Throughout the last decade Ulrich Schnauss has produced three albums which perfectly captured his vision of taking the 90's 'Shoegaze' aesthetic - very uncool at the time as we'll discuss below - and placing it into an electronic context. With the new album 'A Long Way To Fall' Ulrich felt the need to change and explore new avenues. And it's another beauty.

On the 3rd July, German born musician and producer Ulrich Schnauss will play an extra special live A/V show at Electrowerkz. We decided that this was the perfect time to have him create his Ransom Note Mix and we caught up with him to find out a bit more about his background, his mix and his general thought on music;

In the first week of September we’re heading to the beautiful scenery of Tisno, Croatia, to celebrate the first edition of Dekmantel Selectors. In the run up to the festival, we’ve launched a new temporary podcast-series where we invite ten of our selectors from the festival to dig deep in their unique collections. The idea behind the mix is to create a Time Document, focusing on a specific period of time with the artist being free in choosing this period. This period could in fact entail anything: a certain decennia, the time he or she fell in love, The Cold War, November ’92 – March ’93, or the rise of Nigerian music. It’s up to the Selectors to choose and tell us a story based on their music collection.

What has been a beautiful ride through many record bags, now comes to an end with the final Selectors Podcast by Manchester-based Andrew Lyster. The NTS-radio host provided us with a finger licking good mix, touching on many electronic gems that have a special connection to him.  "I wanted to stay true to the theme of the mix series, hopefully offering something different to the other selectors whilst also presenting something that’s true to myself."

Lyster is known as the co-founder and designer of the meandyou collective. Over the past years, Lyster has established himself as a DJ in his own right, through hosting the collective's monthly radio show with a string of world class guests and making regular DJ-appearances everywhere. "This corner of my record collection really excites me, so much interesting stuff was happening at this time, many of these tracks are what I’d now consider to be classics of that time. Quite a few older Manchester related things in here too, which are some of my personal favourites. For me this mix was more about recording a segment of my collection as opposed to a proper DJ mix. A lot of this stuff I picked up in the basement of Vinyl Exchange in Manchester; this era and that shop feel very connected to me."

Matrixxman has been a Dekmantel regular for a couple of years now. The San Francisco producer continues to impress with a new triptych for Dekmantel Records. Over the course of three EP’s (Rhythm, Acid, Polyphony), Charles McCloud Duff displays his versatile and original take on house and techno. The concept of the triptych is to explore the range within the confines of a particular limitation.

The first scheduled EP is called “Sector I: Rhythm” and is, obviously, an exercise in rhythm. Just because a track is entirely composed of drums does not mean it has to be lifeless or devoid of feeling. Given the right approach, drums can be symphonic and even tell an exciting tale in their own right. The four-tracker serves up classic rhythms tracks and is a party from the crust to the run-out, checking off Plastikmanesque styles with ‘Process’ and proper Spartan rhythmic patterns on ‘Mainframes 2.0’. Matrixxman never overstuffs his tracks, ‘Glyph’ being the perfect example of a flanging and spacious rhythmic rundown. ‘Instigator’ rounds things of in style, melting layers of drum effects and bone-rattling
machine rhythm.

For all the emphasis on good times and euphoria in clubland there’s always been a dark side to electronic music, a side that 23 year old DJ/producer and one of Belgium’s most exciting new talents Charlotte de Witte has readily embraced.

If you take a look at the definition of dystopia, you will find that this is a fictional narrative depicting an organized imaginary society so that it prevents its members from reaching the happiness. A dystopia can also be considered, among others, as a utopia which turns to the nightmare and thus lead to one against utopia.

Gordon's dystopia could be defined by four tracks that merge past reveries and acid violence in a disenchanted post-apocalyptic world. 'Dystopia', eponymous track par excellence is both the cornerstone and the violence peak of this EP. It´s gloomy soundscape is well oiled with raw machinery effects and proves to be both incredibly captivating and a powerful floor filler.

More about Gordon : Gordon is a French Deejay-producer who began by remixing InFiné artist Oxia, pop act Bertand Burgalat (Tricatel), Sinner DC, and more recently Vessels. In 2015 Gordon enters officially the label roster and released two EPS (Bleu Merle in February and Coelacanthe in November) as well as a track for Explorer#1. His previous EPs have been featured in XLR8R, Tsugi and Clash amongst others. Gordon recently performed in respected French venues (Gaîté Lyrique, Trianon) and festivals (Nuits Sonores, Printemps de Bourges), and will play at Bataclan & Trans Musicales soon.

Seven years after revolutionizing the scene with his Cumbias de Villa Donde, he’s back with “Tierra de King Coya”, the first single from a long awaited second album to be released by ZZK Records in 2017.

Since 2006 the French label InFiné released 21 albums and 49 EPs. A large discography in a short period of time that is crammed with music that does not follow one stylistic guideline. From Techno to Classic, from House to Electronica, and Pop: each new release enters a new path in sound. Their artists roster consists of hailed musicians like the Luxembourg pianist and composer Francesco Tristano, the Austrian Minimal Pop lady Clara Moto, the experimental Techno maverick Rone, mysterious Arandel, the Classic meets Techno trio Aufgang, and the French club music legends Agoria and Oxia.
