Composer-pianist Robert Cunningham's many works for piano, various chamber ensembles, voice, chorus, and piano and orchestra reflect a highly original, complex, and chromatic Romantic style. He studied piano with Loren Withers at Duke University (graduating in 1970) and with Katherine Bacon at Juilliard.  Later turning to composing, he obtained a master's degree in composition from Georgia State University in 1995.  Based on a dissertation analyzing Rachmaninoff's harmonic practices, he received his Ph.D. in music theory from Florida State University in 1999. He is the author of Sergei Rachmaninoff: A Bio-Bibliography, published by Greenwood Press.
