Here is a recording from the up and coming AZA recorded at Midwest Freaks last December in Madison, where IT, Intellephunk and Remain in Night united for a secret warehouse party. How can you explain being lost in the Midwest and spending all night with non stop rave alchemy in a secret warehouse? This type of thing really fills you with hope for the future. 

AZA is techno as a living being. She was born in SF to parents who had immigrated from Trinidad and Tobago of the West Indies. She grew up within music, from the music of the Caribbean (ranging from Dub and Reggae to Calypso) to the sounds of Jazz and Funk, which led her to singing in operas resulting in a college scholarship for voice. Her greatest revelation came when her mother took her to Movement and she experienced techno. She says, “I feel blissful when I create and play techno. It takes me into inner space travel. It is a place where I feel safe. The possibilities feel so endless in my techno explorations.” Experience that techno bliss with this moment of AZA at Midwest Freaks.

The trio behind our party of the year discuss creating space for the FLINTA community, their most outrageous live performances and more.

Resident Advisor is wrapping up the year, and alongside our best-of-2024 records and tracks lists comes our favourite party: Barcelona-based platform MARICAS. The self-described "loving and pervy LGBTQIA+ techno collective" started in 2018 when ISAbella, Eloisa Blitzer and graphic designer Gina Guasch decided it was time to create a fun space for queer women and nonbinary people in their city. Since then, MARICAS has become a celebrated international series, revealing in its ascent how much of the techno scene—even in its queerest corners—continues to cater to men.

In this RA Exchange, the trio talk about their humble origins as well as the ongoing obstacles they face in promoting the party in the face of discrimination. Performance plays an important role in their events, and they take an entertaining trip down memory lane, discussing some of the most outlandish theatrics and installations that have made it onto their dance floors: a Catholic confessional booth where the priest gave kisses, a livestreamed toilet stall where people undressed in front of the camera and a make-out session from figures covered in paint. Underneath the showmanship, however, is an unwritten code of respect and acceptance that extends far beyond the rave—their mission is to transform the social taboo surrounding difference into a positive force in our world. London-born, Amsterdam-based Lenxi began as the lead singer of a punk-electro band before immersing herself in the Dutch dance scene. Now a DJ, singer, and producer, her music blends personal, melancholic synths with the rough energy of deep techno, IDM, breaks, and rave in her DJ and live sets.

BASHKKA is a powerhouse. As a DJ, she’s a resident at Blitz in her hometown of Munich, Raum in Amsterdam and Hamam Nights in Berlin. In her sets - and her productions - there's a driving percussive-ness that speaks to her formative years in New York amongst the ballroom community.

Cormac (Polari/Running Back/Ostgut Ton/Correspondant)

Once a hidden gem in the dance music world, Cormac’s reputation as a respected selector has risen . Originally from the North of Ireland, he’s known for his signature mix of HI-NRG, house, techno, and nu-wave—sounds that have made him a fixture and influence on the international electronic music circuit. His acclaimed sets have been notable highlights at clubs and festivals such as Panorama Bar, Sónar, Bassiani, Glastonbury, fabric, WHOLE Festival, and beyond.

A former dancefloor regular at iconic nights like Trade, Nag Nag Nag, and Bugged Out!, Cormac has been DJing for over two decades. His marathon closing sets at Berghain’s Panorama Bar—sometimes running 11 hours or more—have become the stuff of legend, reinforcing his status as one of the scene’s most trusted selectors.

In 2021, he launched Polari Records, a label dedicated to showcasing LGBTQ+ artistry, with releases from both rising talents and established names.

Beyond the booth, Cormac has been featured on magazine covers in Germany, the U.S., and the UK, and has contributed standout mixes to BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix, Beats in Space, Resident Advisor, and DJ Mag.

In January 2024, he debuted his podcast Cormac’s Queerly Beloved, where he speaks with LGBTQIA+ artists and allies about the role music plays in their lives. As a host, he brings warmth, curiosity, and a deepening commitment to his work as a queer health advocate and queer history archivist.
