Aeroplane Not-So-Monthly Mix January 2014

Ever since the epic space disco masterpieces of early Lindstrom, the electronic music world has looked closely at everything coming from the Nordics. 

We have also looked north, and found one handsome man named Jarle Brathen – a Full Pupp mate of Prins Thomas and Todd Terje – to contribute to our LUVCAST series. 

Although his productions are clearly cosmic synth influenced, he looks a lot into House when DJing. His mix is a warming conglomerate of funky, deep and fuzzy disco and house jams from around the globe. Just what we need for this cold september!

Both give an entirely new lease of life to a classic every raver will chow down on. Such a good feeling.."

Offset (a.k.a. Philippe Juven) takes his cues from the Detroit techno of pioneers like Derrick May, Carl Craig, and Drexciya-­‐affiliated  project Dopplereffekt, as well as post-­‐punk/industrial outfits Joy Division 
and Front 242. 
On this latest outing, opener “Disturbed” invents its own strain of sci-­‐fi nu-­‐disco, with brassy pads and an infectious, looped bassline. Fittingly, Norwegian DJ/producer and affiliate of Prins Thomas’ Full 
Pupp label Jarle Bråthen supplies a title-­‐track remix.  
 Rounding out the EP, “Pikes Peak” features punchy, big-­‐room drums, suspenseful builds offset by paranoid arpeggiators, and hazy, dystopian pads, while the funked-­‐up electro of “Wolf Gang” gives way to a melancholic, cold-­‐wave chords and a hive of detuned synths.

After the success of the hypnotic Solaris EP by Grabo'sky, here comes the remixes by two brilliant producers: The Beat Broker and Jarle Bråthen.

Grabo'sky - Solaris (Jarle Bråthen Remix)

Anonymous engineer Man Power delivers the Kiloton EP for Correspondant’s 26th release, available in both digital and vinyl formats on 14 April 2014. The producer’s recent contributions to the label, including a track on Compilation 02, feature corrosive riffs and irreverent stylistic mixing. Kiloton presents a tighter sound complimenting label signatures of 
acid-laced, dramaturgical warm-ups and off-kilter body workouts. 

Man Power opens Kiloton with Balearic beats and chugging 303 acid, summoning a Soca-style saxophone intervention, then stirring discordant synths into a sonic whirlpool. All sound is momentarily sucked into a silent plateau, before plunging back down to ride out the track with new momentum. In his outerworld rework, Hardway Bros’ Brit Sean Johnston pitches down the original, swerving into low-slung 80s styling and leaving behind galactic static. 

“Parenthesis” is built around samples from a ‘71 conversation between critical philosophers Chomsky and Foucault on the need for creative freedom in human labor. Man Power creates urgency around the tempered delivery of Chomsky’s words with escalating, acid-drenched pulses, distorted echoes, and distended synths to simultaneously soporific and provocative effect. 

British producer and DJ Raudive turns out a cold-blooded, high-octane rework of “Parenthesis”. His minimalist composition puts a driving kick drum at the core, and the narrative is compressed down around the directive matrix of “Work” and the encircling echoes of “Repression – Oppression – Destruction – Coercion”. Raw electricity jolts bones.

Man Power - Kiloton Hardway Bros Remix

Coming from the traffic-saturated streets and lo-fi screamo scene of Mexico City, rising producer Max Jones makes his debut on Correspondant with the Cornetto EP. 

Lead cut “Cornetto” starts things off in the label’s signature style of deep, dark dancefloor warmups, with a live-feel percussive line and foggy drones shot through with confrontational midrange sirens. “Uh Oh” opens at a clip with an electrified, alien pulse, but keeps to the stripped-back core elements of thrashing cymbals and two alternating vocal samples. “Slow feat. Mijo” finds Jones teaming up with ongoing collaborator Alec Sander in a sinister, new wave-inspired cut, built around a narcotic vocal mantra and resonant, oscillating synths, while the minimal, throbbing bassline of “L.M.M” follows its own trail into a sonic wormhole, offset by crispy hi-hats to round out the EP. 

Cornetto follows previous label releases Polina, from Agents of Time, and The Ballroom collaborative 12” from Jennifer Cardini and David Shaw, and will see a vinyl and digital release on September 22.

Juno Review... "About time that U decide 2 light my fire"
Last year, Sweetooth sorts Paul Withey and Sarah Lazenby pitched up on ISM with "Disco Fantasy", a glorious disco-boogie workout that lit up many nu-disco dancefloors. 14 months on they return to the label, this time in cahoots with Masterworks Music, Midnight Riot and Thunder Jam regular Kellini. In its original form, "Music In U" is a breezy chunk of sun-kissed disco revivalism, with Lazenby providing a strong, sing-along vocal over a fantastic backing track rich in warm bass, colourful synthesizer lines and densely layered percussion hits. Jarle B provides the first revision, pitching down the tempo and opting for a Balearic nu-disco vibe, before the Crystal Touch Remix brilliantly re-casts the track as a synth-heavy chunk of 1980s NYC freestyle/electrofunk fusion.
