A founding father of Rinse FM, recipient of the first ASBO involving a ban from all rooftops and the man behind the decks at some of the scenes most electric moments; the name Slimzee is synonymous with grime. Whilst all of this is common knowledge, what you may not know is that in the early nineties he went by the name DJ Slimfast and predominantly mixed jungle and hardcore. For many of the grime scene's originators, with some of whom he went on to form the seminal Pay As U Go Cartel, jungle is the foundation. Wiley, Riko & Maxwell D all “emerged out of jungle fever” and the same goes for D Double E and Dizzee Rascal who started off mixing jungle in their bedrooms as youngsters before picking up the mic. From its humble beginnings in London’s tower blocks and basements to NYFW and art galleries on the Queen’s doorstep, everybody wants a piece of grime. For our 111th Truancy Volume, we have the man who has been there from the start in the mix to take us back to his roots. Sixty minutes of Kool cuts, tape pack classics and B-side rollers. No MCs, no rewinds.

Recorded in The Panther Room at The Bunker and Wrecked's Gay Pride party on June 27, 2015.  The room was opened by Mike Servito and closed by Aaron Clark Price of Honcho.  Mike Servito had this to say about The Black Madonna's set: "I must say I have not seem someone command a room quite like that in some time. people losing their fucking minds! she served and beat us silly! she is inspiring us awwwwl!".  to which she responded: " I have to say I think it was basically my favorite time I ever DJed and so much of it had to do with how great Mike Servito was and the state the room was in when he did his thing. It was just perfect."  Yeah, it was basically one big love fest in the booth and on the floor.   As TBM says: You're damn right we still believe!!!

Truancy Volume 177 comes from our favourite selector. Affiliated with Numbers, Wireblock, Dress 2 Sweat, and Rubadub, Jackmaster is known generally as one of the most consistent forces in music. With a wealth of heavy-hitter, high profile mixes in his pockets, such as his DJ-Kicks mix, BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, FabricLive instalment and more recently his Live From Mitchell Street series alongside friend and collaborator Jasper James, it’s his six-year running Mastermix series that’s recently taken a new life of its own. Running Mastermix parties across London, Glasgow, Amsterdam and Lisbon, he’s also just hosted a Mastermix stage at Riverside in his hometown of Glasgow. We’re delighted to add his first Truancy Volume to his catalogue; a mix that comes in at almost an hour and a half and it’s a relentless hour and a half at that. Jack takes us through a selection of techno including releases from Numbers and a track by Lory D he holds dear; the rest is left for the listener to discover. “I prefer not to publish tracklists for my own mixes for many reasons. Mostly because it removes any element of surprise which was always pivotal to my mixes which featured well known pop tracks blended with techno, or whatever. It was never to keep music secret. Music is for everyone and that’s why it’s so important, especially in these times.” We caught up with Jack about the art of digging, Circoloco, ‘Cunter the unsackable’ and the mix he’s recorded for us – with a second part to follow.

Bullion has had a busy July, to say the least. Earlier this month the Trilogy Tapes released their 58th record, a record that's caused quite a stir online with it's sea-shanty anthem title track 'Blue Pedro'. Bullion's regular feat of producing catchy, rhythmic melodies shines through on this jaunty jam, and it's a superb follow up to his previous Young Turks release from 2011. Long time fans of Bullion, or anyone remotely interested in J Dilla, will also have heard his hit 2007 mixtape, 'Pet Sounds: In The Key of Dee'. Taking apart The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds LP, Nathan turned it into a stylistic ode to J Dilla, who had passed away a few months earlier. To mark 10 years of the mixtape, he recently assembled ten musicians to recreate the album at the Jazz Cafe in London. Players included Mica Levi collaborator Giles King-Ashong, Raven Bush of the Heliocentrics and saxophonist Wayne Francis. On our 182nd Truancy Volume, Nathan works his way through blissful 80s jams from Barry Reynolds, Nick Höppner and Tent. We caught up with Bullion to discuss his early garage days, his debut album Loop the Loop, DEEK Recordings and his new EP 'Blue Pedro' on The Trilogy Tapes.

WHAT'S NEXT?! - Octobre 2018

Time sure does fly when you’re having fun, and so it is that we’ve already raced up to podcast number 200. We’ve managed to call upon a suitably large name for the honour; someone who has very much shaped the techno scene over the course of the last 20 years and continues to excite people every time he plays. That man is Surgeon. As a performer, Birmingham’s Anthony Childs was one of the first men to embrace and exploit the possibilities of Ableton Live and Final Scratch. His mastery of that technology made his sets even more improvised and innovative, and over the years he has never compromised his vision. He plays with a sense of devastation and destruction that explores the very outer edges of what is possible, while always keeping the dance floor absolutely locked in. It’s been the same since he founded his hometown’s first techno club, House of God, at the start of the 90s. 

As a producer—whether solo or in celebrated collaborations with Regis as British Murder Boys or Ben Sims as Frequency 7—he seems to be getting better with age. Right from his first EP on Karl O’Connor’s Downwards in 1994, surgeon has had a hard hitting, linear style that remains to this day. Recent years saw him return to a primitive rave style and incorporate the gritty industrial influences of his youth. But in 2018 he evolved again and served up what many consider to be his best album in years. Luminosity Device features a more rhythmic, playful sense of drum programming next to his meticulously crafted synths and enthralling sense of urgency and future paranoia. The nuance in his tracks is now as intriguing as the visceral power of the kicks, and it all adds up to an album that works as well on headphones, at home, as it does on the dance floor. It’s proper techno by a proper techno head. 

And so is the mix he has put together for us. Over 1 hour 45 minutes, the man calls upon plenty of pivotal names from Juan Atkins and Oscar Mulero to Donato Dozzy and James Ruskin. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, so that zoned out passages of dubbed out drums are followed by intergalactic space battles and moments of synth laden intensity. It’s a testament to Surgeon’s skills that he can take you to such far ranging corners of the techno world without ever getting lost.
