The deep, immersive echo chamber that sits at the centre of DeepChord’s signature work with Echospace may appear inspired by the genre-defining work of first-wave dub-technoists that appeared on the Chain Reaction label in the mid to late 90s. But it’s also work that’s quintessentially building upon the Detroit scene where it was born, and that divine marriage of roots and vision makes the work of Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell at once so highly considered, so timeless, and so pertinent. The distinguishing feature of the duo’s sound is its ability and willingness to stand still; whereas much of dub techno attempts to propel the listener forward in either a lover’s rock groove or the cushioned reverb of a driving beat, DeepChord’s synth-driven analog warmth trades not only in static ambience but also propulsive design. Their set at Métropolis in 2011 was nothing short of enveloping and transcendent.

 (1969) & EARTH ROT (1970), tracks from other projects like STRANGE 
LADIES (MCA 1977) plus music he produced or arranged for artists like 
Cannonball Adderely, David McCullum, David Rose & His Orchestra, The 
Electric Prunes,  Nat Adderley...

On May 25th 2024, to accompany the launch of his Arthur Russell book "Travels Over Feeling" Richard King put together an event at London's Barbican celebrating Arthur's life with an all star musical cast recreating and reimagining his music.

I was thrilled to be invited to play a DJ set in the foyer afterwards. I have been an Arthur Russell devotee for 30 years and decided to play an all Arthur Russell DJ set*. The atmosphere was very special with lots of love transmitting back and forth from the DJ booth to the dancefloor. I really felt a freedom to slowly build it up playing so many of my favourite AR tracks and it was one of my very favourite DJ gis of 2024 so far.


*Full disclosure - there was an additional 30 minutes finale of this set that didn't record where I played non Arthur Russell, disco / disco adjacent records.

I’ve been wanting to do this for a while and now is as good a time as any!

I’ve done a tribute/compilation mix of 2 of my favourite artists - who also happened to be brothers: Geoff & Trevor Bastow

Geoff & Trevor Bastow were born in Yorkshire and moved down to London in the mid 70s. They became stalwarts on the Library scene recording thousands of pieces for the likes of KPM/Bruton and Music De Wolfe. 

Geoff Bastow latterly moved to Munich, worked with Giorgio Moroder and was responsible for a lot of the Munich Disco sound in the early 80s. He was also behind the early 80s mega hit K.I.D on Sam. 

Relatively little is known about his brother Trevor. There’s hardly any information about him at all online apart from a single image on Discogs of him looking pretty morose at a piano. He also recorded under the pseudonyms Anthony Hobson and Unit 9. 

These guys definitely had the secret sauce and I hope you enjoy some of the pieces on here. All the tracks have a Bastow writing/producing/performing or mixing in them.
