Angels Voice (Heartbeat) [Remastered]

A trip to the hospital by train for my first Physio' session after a shoulder replacement following an RTA. Due to 'Constraints' at the time, it was composed with just my right hand and right leg and it's only in the last week or so I've gained enough mobility of my left arm and hand to finally get it all recorded 👍

That all said, I hope you enjoy listening to it 🎧

Hand Break

A few years ago, I spent a late summer on the east coast of Ibiza, nowhere near San Antonia, in a house amongst 20 acres of orange and lime groves, somewhere to chill and reset. This wee house had no WiFi, no TV, radio reception was patchy and... was exactly what I needed.

There was a gas bottle hob for cooking and a wood burning stove for heat at night AND a huge pile of books, mostly in Dutch left behind by previous occupants (the owner was Dutch).

Amongst these paper treasures were a bunch of Rudyard Kipling books, the books you felt you could/should have read but never found the time. 

I'd grown up on Jungle Book, albeit the fluffy animated Disney version  (yes I can sing all the songs verbatim) but delving into Kipling's other works, to get a bit of an insight as to the man and through that, the mindset of the time, one of his poems 'My Boy Jack', published in 1916, was quite moving, around the time his own son John had went MIA in the battle of Loos in France in 1915. 

This poem, which is rumoured to be about Jack Cornwell, a 16 year old sailor who was the youngest man/boy? to receive the Victoria Cross, sadly posthumously, during the naval Battle of Jutland.

It's publication at the time resonated with many families in the UK who's sons were on ships fighting during WW1. Jack O' Tars being a common salutation for sailors up to then ( and possibly still is?)

This is my interpretation of the poem.

Jutland Jack

The last coal fired power station in the UK has now been decommissioned, roll on nuclear lol! It's an end of an era in the UK's insatiable search for energy to feed our hunger for electricity so although it's no longer here as a pollutant I got to thinking about how historically this came to be.

I'm old enough to remember the Miner's strike in 1984 where miners everywhere in the UK went on strike to protest at the pit closures. It was a 'Great' time to be a policeman on a picket line. 1 week's overtime and I quote "I'll be going to the Canary islands with the wife and kids for 2 weeks with this overtime". Not the case for striking miners and their families alas. And here was naive me at the time thinking the poverty gap from Victorian times was finally narrowing. 🙄

This piece of music (working title was Bittersweet Coal Symphony 😁) is based upon a poem, written and narrated by Ian McMillan, a poet from Barnsley which sums up the demise of the UK coal industry and is specifically about Kellingley colliery in Yorkshire (Big 'K') the last working deep mine closing down in 2015 due to 'Economics'. A bittersweet moment for all concerned. 🫡
