Golden Chanterelle (Silica Gel)

Summer’s currency whorled in the peat moss. Turmeric dancers. The type species, the golden standard. Both yolks and yokes are rooted in the bestial. There’s a certain wild joy in the washes where water goes to rest, and the crow flies over the white oak tree. Here, the blades are mere wrinkles; here, time slows and smells of apricot.  

Latin: Cantharellus cibarius, roughly meaning culinary chalice.

Properties: The chanterelle is a cosmopolitan mushroom that occurs nearly worldwide; known as the pfifferling in Germany, the girolle in France and the gallinacci in Italy, it is beloved everywhere it occurs. It’s becoming clearer to science that there are many cryptic cibaroid species hiding within the “golden chanterelle” species complex. Golden chanterelles are one of the few mushrooms that have had no changes to their original latin binomial since it was assigned in the 1800’s. Like their illuminating star, Cantharellus sp. provide high amounts of Vitamin D and quicken the vision with carotenoids. 

Companions: Chanterelles are ectomycorrhizal with numerous hardwoods and coniferous trees; in these alliances, the chanterelles and trees exchange nutrients that they can’t synthesize on their own. In the eastern United States, chanterelles associate heavily with Quercus species, but they also find kinship with the dark, witchy hemlock forests of New England. Other companions include: beech, birch, eastern white pine, balsam fir and sphagnum mosses. Care should be taken to avoid poison ivy, as they’re often in cohabitation.

Silica Gel ~ July (Chanterelle)

City & i.o are immensely proud to present Chaos is God Neighbour, the full-length follow-up to their 2019 record Spirit Volume. This new release finds the musicians digging into murkier depths than Spirit Volume, and features extensive contributions from collaborators Dis Fig, aka Felicia Chen, x/o, aka Veron Xio, and vvilms, aka Aaron Wharton.

Composed at a frenetic pace over several weeks in mid-2020, the claustrophobia is palpable. As the album progresses the tracks get both shorter and progressively more brutal, interrupted by brief moments of respite. Throat-shredding harsh vocals provide a high watermark in intensity, while the expansive performances of Dis Fig and x/o serve as vantage points over the morass, giving the listener something both beautiful and human to grasp. Careening from rich synth work, to distorted guitars in alternate tunings; from i.o’s virtuosic and unhinged drumming to slabs of harsh ambient noise, this is a genuinely ambitious and rewarding album.

The latest episode of our morning show DJ Afterparty (Radio Študent) brings forth an electrifying mix from one of the most promising Slovenian youngbloods! 

Ljubljana-born digital artist and DJ Luna Woelle aka wo11.e is a young representative of the global hybrid club aesthetics. Currently studying in Tokyo, for the past year she's been active on the local experimental club scene. She recently established the platfom @mizuha-cc with Ichiro Tanimoto, and presented their first compilation Bioshpere, which includes 21 up-and-coming artists from all around the globe. 

For her first contribution to DJ Afterparty, she delivered an ecclectic morning mix of effervescent club sounds and hypersynthetic sound collages.

This album follows intergenerational trauma, fugitives of Christian violence in a twilight called Puruma, returning to Mama Cocha, the sea that theorists call Nowhere.

Dedicated to the life of Paul Sousa, who while incarcerated, worked years as an inmate firefighter across the Sierra Nevada of California. Also dedicated to the work of Sage LaPena and Dr. Gretel Mendizabal Nolte. (Includes misreadings of Jimenez, Saenz, Claudel, & Wright).

ORCORARA 2010 was comissioned and released in 2018 by Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva, CH for the first floor at the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement 2018 ‘The sound of screens imploding’.

Cosmic Sex (also known as Sexo Cósmico) started in 2017 as an event series focused on bassy, breaky, percussion-driven electronic music in the Hessle Audio mould, but it has gradually become a movement of like-minded lovers of transgenre electronic music of past, present and future. 

Cosmic Sex events have become notorious for its joyful and warm vibe, eclectic programming and impressive lightshows by the collective's lighting maestro TiWi, setting the template for forward-thinking clubbing in Slovenia.

CS events take place at the 200-capacity club Channel Zero in Ljubljana.
