Avant-garde experimental ensemble INSECT LIFE is set to release their self-titled debut album, INSECT LIFE, via 577 Records, on November 7th, 2025. The album delivers a sound that is raw, wild, and authentic, blending improvisation, orchestral textures, and dynamic interplay into an immersive, art-driven experience. There’s something hypnotic about the whole listening experience, drawing the listener into its cosmic, abstract world.
Born from weekly collaborative sessions at Ben Goldberg’s house, INSECT LIFE is an Oakland-based experimental ensemble dedicated to pushing the boundaries of improvised music. The band emphasizes spontaneity, orchestral cohesion, and an adventurous sonic palette that fuses avant-garde and abstract elements. Over time, they developed a distinctive collective approach, creating an instant orchestral sound where cello and drums interact with winds, driving rhythm and texture in unexpected, groovy, and abstract directions. The result is a cosmic, dynamic, and innovative sound—modern yet deeply rooted in the old-school spirit of improvisation.
Enhancing the record’s depth, Zachary James Watkins (Black Spirituals, Foreign/Domestic) contributes remixes as a guest member for this album, complementing the ensemble’s expansive sonic landscape.
This release marks INSECT LIFE’s debut on 577 Records, featuring Gerald Cleaver—a guest member of the band for this album. A longtime collaborator with the label, Cleaver has released five albums as a leader and countless more as co-leader or featured artist. With its daring, cohesive sound, INSECT LIFE is poised to become a standout entry in 577 Records’ catalog.
The album will be available digitally and on CD, with a first pressing of only 100 units.

'Scene Thirteen' by INSECT LIFE

Thought as an hypnosis session inspired by the neurophysiology behind the mysteries of sleep stages and its transitions phenomena, the aim is to introduce the listener to an altered state of consciousness where sound frequencies are melted into brainwaves. Repetitive bass lines synchronize rhythmic slow activity, as during sleep-onset, able to induce a hypnagogic state. Higher tones overlap, mirroring the gamma band that evoke inner memories from deeper areas. As melodies and whisperings modulate your thoughts, REM-like architecture sculptures the imagery and the self vanishes. 

<<< You are now entering the “dysvreality”. Chords resonate echoes from a distant time: chaos imposed as order. A frenetic lullaby that has already alienated many, turns dreams into nightmares, forcing the subject to escape. Enchanting atmospheres are invaded by electroacoustic patterns seeking for awareness. Sound robot machines return a sense of control, followed by a dreamy space odyssey. Suddenly, a familiar street sound breaks the wake-sleep frontiers. You’ve listened to that before, in another life… Your life. Lucid dreams emerge by identifying this clue. Metal elements dive into an oneiric soundscape where fear and hope collide. Wandering voices interrupt lucidity, translating you to a confusional arousal. 

As you try to open your eyes, you notice with panic that you cannot move, cuddled by sub-bass and strings. Expecting to feel safe while paralyzed, horns and whistles warn you about destiny. In that moment, you realize that distant reality is, in fact, the present and time is running out. >>>

This set was recorded at “Vanishing Point”, a magical open-sky sleepover that took place in Madrid's surroundings in September 2025. So glad to be part of it, endless love to all people involved. Final cut is added as an epilogue, which I hope completes the story with a special bonus for this HOCast.

Gannein - Desiderium [GNRL002]

A therapeutic journey into a mix of jazz, classical, and a blend of types of electronica.  And a wry, gradual observation that promotion tends to only go as far as you push it.  At least I make my fellow musicians laugh a little.

Cat Dog Mouse Records is the record company of the music group FAT. Formed by Phil Giborski, Jeff Noble and Eric Rosenzveig in Montreal, Canada in 1982  the group moved moved to Barcelona, Spain in 1987. They released four albums before disbanding in 1992.  They released their final three records - FAT and the Masters of Haha, Citron and Duos in 2015 and available on vinyl at Forced Exposure and digitally on Bandcamp.

577 Records is proud to be celebrating its 24 year anniversary.  The legendary music master Daniel Carter was one of the first people 577 cofounder Federico Ughi met soon after arriving in New York from Italy in 2000, after a brief stint in London.  It was a meeting of like minds and shortly thereafter the two started a series of house concerts at 577 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, the apartment where Federico was living at the time. The spontaneous nature of the concerts along with the incredible caliber of the deep downtown underground music they were able to present inspired them to bring the unique nature of what they were doing to a wider audience and they founded the label 577 Records to further that mission. 

577 Records started the New York Forward Festival in 2015 to mark the momentous occasion of Daniel Carter’s 70th birthday, now with festival editions happening in Morocco and Italy as well, and the international residency program Sounds of Freedom, in which active musicians are awarded the opportunity to develop their own sound, skills, and improvisation concept.

100% of profit from the sale of most of these albums goes to the musicians.
