“This song is about the presence after loss.” explains Sky Larkin singer Katie Harkin. “I knew that the inspiration for this song meant that it would the saddest on the record for me, so I consciously attempted a fake-out with myself. I wanted it to be our Enola Gay, pop on the surface with a darkness that the casual listener might not pick up on. For me that's one of the funniest things about songs: they can be powerful without being self-evident.”

‘Motto’ the album shares its name with the opening track, released to acclaim online earlier this summer.  Recorded with long-term collaborator, producer John Goodmanson (Girls, Sleater Kinney, Los Campesinos!) in Seattle, the album, like the same-titled opener is a distillation of all that makes Sky Larkin great. 
 
Written for the most part whilst Katie was on the road playing in Wild Beasts, its varied themes and moods reflect the experience of performing in 28 countries and 20 months, a journey that became the record’s foundation. ‘Motto’, the name itself chosen on the 2nd day of the Wild Beasts tour, is a wide and swerving album venturing themes through love (‘Treasury’), loss (‘Loom’), the band's Yorkshire home (‘Tarn’), seasons and lobotomies (‘Frozen Summer’) and much more beyond.
 
Through all it’s themes and moods, ‘Motto’ showcases Sky Larkin’s unshakable ability to conjure immediately satisfying, vibrant indie rock. “I've always wanted our records to be immediate at their most accessible, and at their most expansive, inhabitable” explains Harkin. “I really wanted to make something beautiful that wasn't also permissive.”
 
Since the release of their second album 'Kaleide' in August 2010 and subsequent touring with the likes of Les Savy Fav, Cloud Nothings, Best Coast and Frightened Rabbit, the band took a hiatus. Singer and guitarist Katie Harkin joined fellow northerners Wild Beasts an as extra live band member to accommodate the expansive sound of 'Smother', touring through 2011 and 12, whilst drummer Nestor Matthews sat behind the kit to record with Menace Beach and Giant Fang. Alongside the talents of musicians Nile Marr (AKA Man Made) and Sam Pryor (of These Monsters), Sky Larkin spent this past winter writing a new record in Yorkshire, before taking themselves to Seattle to record their third album. The results promise to be the defining Sky Larkin album.
 
Now well established in the indie rock world, Sky Larkin formed in 2005 with school friends Katie Harkin and Nestor Matthews. After spending their early days earning their stripes appearing alongside bands such as Los Campesinos!, The Organ, Gossip, Architecture In Helsinki and Wild Beasts, the band caught the attention of Wichita Recordings and subsequently released debut album 'The Golden Spike' to much acclaim in 2009.  Between then and the release of their second record 'Kaleide', they have toured throughout the world, headlining and sharing stages with the likes of Stereolab, Broken Social Scene, Conor Oberst, and The Cribs.

As Elephants Are follow last October’s release of the “Crystal” single (BBC Radio 1 Zane Lowe ‘Next Hype’), with the brand new 4-track “Hand Prints” EP.

With past releases being described as everything from “sinister” (This Is Fake DIY), to “Life affirming” and “Magical” (the 405) to “Wonderfully dreamy” (Time Out London), EP title track ‘Hand Prints’ develops further the band’s ability to write nagging melodies wrapped in barbed wire rhythms. EP title track “Hand Prints” has already racked up over 25,000 plays on Soundcloud and plays on BBC Radio 1 from Huw Stephens and Jen & Ally as well as playlists on XFM and Amazing Radio. EP track “Went Wrong” has also given the band its first US radio play courtesy of KCRW.

On the live front, 2013 saw As Elephants Are play their debut slot at the Reading and Leeds Festival on the BBC Introducing Stage as well as appearing at Bushstock and Southsea Festival and supporting Half Moon Run. On 31st March 2014 the band completed their first headline UK Tour. The 10-date tour culminated in the band’s first proper London headline show at The Sebright Arms on 31st March. A Summer of festival appearances now beckons with the following shows already announced and more to follow:

“Nantucket! Take out your map and look at it. See what a real corner of the world it occupies; how it stands there, away off shore, more lonely than the Eddystone lighthouse… all beach, without a background… Nantucket is no Illinois.”
When Herman Neville penned these words in 1851, he envisioned Nantucket through the eyes of a weary whaler at sea. Yet 157 years later, his words resonated with two young men landlocked in the Midwest. Michael LoPresti and Aaron Smith could empathize with the whalers of Neville’s Moby Dick. Their music was their Nantucket, beckoning them to break away from their day jobs and go back to what they loved.  It was this longing that gave way to The Lighthouse and the Whaler.

In June 2008, Michael (lead vocals, guitar, mandolin, keyboard) and Aaron (violin, guitar, keyboard) met in a field Ohio to take photos with a friend. Taking up their instruments – a violin and a guitar – the musicians had an impromptu collaboration session as the photographer snapped his shots. By the end of the day Michael and Aaron had written their first song, aptly titled “The Field Song,” which was released in December 2008 on a four-song EP entitled A Whisper, A Clamour. The band’s blend of ethereal folk and sweeping harmonies quickly caught the attention of Paste, which featured “The Field Song” on its acclaimed CD sampler. The band also earned early praise and recognition from Under the Radar and FILTER, which in July 2009 declared The Lighthouse and the Whaler its “Unsigned Band of the Month.”

While holding odd jobs as graphic designers, grocery clerks and freelance musicians, the band worked for its rightful place in the Midwest music scene, adding Michael’s younger brother, Matthew (percussion), to the full-time line-up. Their college friend Mark Poro (vocals, guitar, mandolin) soon followed, along with his musical collaborator Steven Diaz (vocals, guitar, keyboard, percussion).

Pursuing a do-it-yourself approach, the band booked itself regional tours through the East and West Coasts, sharing stages with notable acts including Sufjan Stevens, The Temper Trap, Carolina Chocolate Drops, A.A. Bondy, Via Audio and Hallelujah the Hills. During these shows the band showed off its multi-instrumentalist approach, impressing crowds at House of Blues, SXSW, Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, The Living Room, Schuba’s and other venues with what MTV describes as “really cool, melodic folk rock… and a live show you’ve got to check out for yourself.”

The Lighthouse and the Whaler was also busy preparing its debut, self-titled LP, just as it was named “Best Indie Artist” at the 2010 Cleveland Music Awards. Described as “colorful, eccentric and fantastically triumphant,” the album showcases the band’s ability to take seemingly simple instrumentations and layer them into something powerful and strong. “Windows” and “Of the Heavens and the Earth” offer punctuated melodies and sustained harmonies, while “Under Mountain, Under Ground” is marked by “sweet harmonies, a resonant barroom piano, and propulsive percussion to an exuberant climax” (KEXP). The lyrics, which hint at the band’s studies in philosophy and theology, provide room for fans to interpret and correlate the music with experiences in their own lives: struggles, triumphs, good ties and bad.

And while Neville’s protagonist looked out longingly for a home that was out of reach, The Lighthouse and the Whaler is wasting no time chasing down what really matters. “We’ve equated music to be something by which people can really be changed and moved,” explains Michael. “There’s something beautiful in music and powerful in music and when faced with a choice of this or other things – other ways to make money or other ways to fill our heads – we would choose this every time.”
