Self, the title-Single from the upcoming debut album has a double-meaning: 
Firstly, the song is autobiographical as being a commentary on my 'self' and my struggle in tackling my own personal issues. Secondly, it is also a message to the listener to reflect on the instant-gratification nature of western society and how, instead of being seduced by other things to make one happy; they can instead rely on themselves. This narrative sets the stage for the sound and narrative of the upcoming album.
'Self' will also be accompanied by a music video as well as a lyric video.

Backwoodz Studioz is excited to debut the first official single, "Body Of Work," featuring Masai Bey and Roc Marciano, from History Will Absolve Me, the new album from billy woods

The track, produced by Willie Green, is one of the earliest that the emcee and beatsmith recorded for the album, and billy woods grew immediately attached to the track upon hearing it live in the studio. "The inspiration for 'Body Of Work' comes from chain-gang spirituals," he explains. "All of the verses concern themselves with work, but also with getting older and trying to sum up one's life, for better or worse."

After laying his verse, woods knew he wanted features on the song, but he also know it couldn't be just anyone, given the weighty retrospective - and introspective - subject matter. "I knew I needed some older cats on it," notes woods. Each rapper builds on the themes that billy sets forth in the opening verse ("if you are familiar with the land issue in South Africa and Zimbabwe, the content of my verse might be a little clearer," says woods), and each add their own personal experiences and emotions, bringing the track to life with three unique and insightful perspectives.

"Blue Dream," according to woods, was inspired by "the end of a long relationship, the movie Blue Valentine, and this period I went through where I seriously contemplated whether I wanted to quit smoking weed."

The beat, produced by Man Mantis, sets the mood with a hypnotic sample and reverb-heavy drums, aided along by singer L'Wren's haunting vocals on the song's chorus. woods, pulling from the concept of Blue Valentine, gives his take on a relationship, focusing only on the relationship's beginning and end. But even as things start smoothly, woods hints at issues, rapping, "I'm hoping you don't ask the wrong questions/ I really don't wanna start lying." The song takes a firm turn towards the darkness in the second verse, as woods raps, "So much unsaid/ We only keep it real when we're joking... Somewhere along the line/ We stopped trying and started going through the motions."

It’s been only a few short months since billy woods released his dense, mission-statement of an album, History Will Absolve Me, and already the Washington, DC-born, NYC-based lyricist is back in the studio working on new music. This time around, however, he’s working with long-time Aesop Rock-producer Blockhead, and the two are currently deep into a collaborative album scheduled for release later this year. Backwoodz Studioz is excited to release a remix for the the History Will Absolve Me standout “DMCA.”


Although “DMCA” became a fast favorite from History Will Absolve Me, to hear billy woods tell it, the track almost didn’t even make the album. “DMCA is one of those songs that I really loved but didn’t expect to get the kind of love that it got,” explains billy, noting that while he wasn’t originally planning a remix for the track, it turns out that other artists, especially, have been drawn to the song. “I think I managed to sum up stuff that a lot of artists are dealing with right now.”


While the original track, produced by Willie Green, is one of the more “boom-bap” tracks on the album, Blockhead’s remix offers a darker take on the song, an ethereal swirl of bouncy congas, winding guitar riffs, and brooding synths. “Once Blockhead and I connected, I was bugging him about a remix,” explains billy, recalling how the remix came to be. “We got sidetracked on the new music we’re working on, but I’m glad we got this out there – not only is it a new take on ‘DMCA’ but it’s also a little taste of the project that Blockhead and I have coming.”
