Yamaha TX81Z - FM Synthesizer Module (1986)

What better way to get to know a synthesizer than making a track with it? I decided to get over the insane difficulty of programming the Yamaha TX81Z, my first FM-synth, and dive into its core only to discover a very interesting and deep machine with lots of possibilities. All sounds are self-programmed except the famous lately bass sound and some additional percussion.

"The Yamaha TX81Z is a 4-operator digital FM-synthesizer module from 1987. It is basically a rack mount version of the DX-11, which makes it a cheap and compact source of Yamaha's 4-op FM-sounds. What makes this one interesting is the ability to use waveforms other than just the classic sine wave when programming FM-sounds. A true quality semi-vintage synthesizer for a low price, definitely a keeper!"

A short demo of the Yamaha TX81z available for sale here in Portugal.

As you likely know, this is a very nice compact rack mount FM synthesiser.
It might only have 4 operators rather than the 6 the Yamaha DX7 has, but you get extra waveforms available in the operators (in the DX7 you can only use a sine wave).

This demo shows the nice FM sounds this synth has in memory.
To finish the demo, some of the sounds are played again together with some nice external effects (Eventide H3000 and Lexicon PCM91), which takes this nice sounding synth to a whole new level.

The unit is fully working, but the buttons could have some cleaning (sometimes it is easy to move up or down two sounds at one press) and the top is quite rusty (but only the top, looking at the unit mounted in a rack it looks in pretty good shape).
Still, it is ready to work and sounds great, as you can listen to in this demo ;)
