What is the Murder of Crows?
This is the question that is swirling around in everyone’s mind. Much has been speculated, but not much is known. Is it the most notoriously gruesome massacre of birds in history? Well, truly, the murder of crows is not very cryptic: it’s actually what you call a group of crows.
But, more specifically, it’s a band. Murder of Crows are a student folk band operating out of Bishop Kearney High School in Irondequoit, NY. With the assistance of Kearney music director Rick Yogis, the students of the Murder of Crows play a selection of Irish and American folk music, both vocal and instrumental. The group features both singers and traditional folk instruments such as guitars, mandolins, fiddles, banjos, tin whistles, double bass, bodhran, and accordion. Recently, instruments from different folk traditions have joined the group, including the Hawaiian ukulele and the Russian balalaika. Many of the students are talented multi-instrumentalists, and one even plays the sandwich.
Each student was born in a log cabin (probably not the same one, although no one is sure), and got together to form the Murder of Crows in 2010. Since then, the Crows have had the time of their lives playing music and generally folking around. The band regularly plays shows around the Rochester area at various venues, including the Lilac Festival and the Holy Cross Festival of the Green. The highlight of the Crows’ touring life was a 2013 trip to Ireland. The band played shows all around the Emerald Isle, including 2 nights at Dublin’s famous O’Donoghue’s,  returning their music to its native home.
In addition to their live ventures, the Murder of Crows has engaged in a number of recording projects. The band recorded the soundtrack for and starred in the 2013 short art house film The Cavans Come to Cork. The film was fun, but the Crow’s mainstay is music: the band has recorded and released two CDs: 2012’s Triple Snake Chopper and their 2015 self-titled effort Murder of Crows. 
So what is the Murder of Crows? They’re a student-run, instrument-playing, gig-playing, world-traveling, sandwich-eating, folkin’ awesome Irish folk group based right here in Rochester.
