Summers End Festival 2021

Evil Nine are an English DJ/Producer duo comprising of members Tom Beaufoy and Patrick Pardy. Gaining recognition after signing to Adam Freelands label Marine Parade in the early 2000's their unique sound gathered a high following worldwide and had a very influential effect in the early Nuskool Breaks scene. Blending breaks with 4 on the floor the guys were the instigators of the very early tech funk sound held in high regard from such acts as Elite Force and Meat Katie.

This mix was recorded LIVE at A38 (which was in Prague?) back in 2008.

Ahh, what can I say about this mix? Right before this campout I had gone through a really rough couple of weeks. I lost a really good friend (I love you Brandon aka B Funky) and literally 2 days after their passing, while I was on my bike leaving work, I witnessed a very traumatic fatal pedestrian vs. auto accident in which I was first on scene and felt so helpless. I know that life has its ups and downs but that was a really rough time.

This FnF campout was in my calendar for a couple of months before all this shit happened and I am such a fan and supporter of the FnF events that I was honored & excited to be DJing. But the thing was, my head wasn't in its usual, happy, content space. I felt sad and angry. So I decided that the best way to work it out would be through music with my very accepting, understanding & forgiving FnF community.

This set was recorded live on Saturday night (aka Sunday morning) on September 10 (technically 9/11), 2022 from 3-4am. There are no edits to the live recording aside from a gentle mastering process to bring up the levels, so what you hear is what we all experienced that night. This is probably the darkest set (for me) that I've played in a while. It bumps at around 130bpm and bounces between tech house and techno. It was a cathartic set and I felt like things started slowly making a turn for the better immediately after this campout.

After reviewing this set list, I want to give two special shout outs: 

1) To Matt Sassari, whom I only discovered whilst shopping for techno for this campout. I played two of his originals in this set but I actually bought quite a few more, I really like his productions and am happy to have discovered a new (to me) artist. 

2) Track 15, "Temporary," was one that I originally purchased for the FnF Summer campout but never played. I forgot about it and then rediscovered it when I was preparing for this campout. Turns out the lyrics were just what I needed at the time:

Elite Force aka Simon Shackleton has been in the electronic music scene for well over 15 years from his early beginnings in a band (Headless Chickens) with the well known Thom Yorke of Radiohead fame to his early electronic music beginnings with Lunatic Calm. Elite Force is a true professional which has seen him tour on every corner of the globe and gather a large fan base over the years. 

This LIVE mix was recorded at the Breakspoll awards back in 2011, right around the time the Tech Funk Breaks genre was gaining momentum. Elite Force won 2 Breakspoll awards that night, one for Best Producer and one for Best Label (for his highly regarded U&A imprint). The mix itself is a great journey of breakbeat music and one of the stand out sets of the night.

Elite Force - LIVE @ Breakspoll 2011

With a huge back catalogue of music Koma and Bones paved the way in the Nu Skool Breaks scene in the early 2000's with hit after hit including the huge Breaks anthem Morpheus on the TCR label. They were a three man outfit from the north west of Britain (Lancaster), comprising of the DJ'ing duo Koma & Bones (Andy Duckmanton & Chris Kirkbride) and former drum and bass producer Proteus (Jude Sebastian).

This mix was recorded LIVE at the now defunct Tangled Nightclub in Manchester, UK.

Commonly known as “The Godfather of Breaks” Rennie Pilgrem’s contribution to the early Nuskool Breaks scene is legendary and given this title is often considered responsible for the creation of the Nuskool Breaks genre. Before moving into the genre  breaks Rennie produced techno and acid house and was part of the influential rave group Rhythm Section along with Ellis Dee. Rennie is also the boss of Thursday Club Recordings aka TCR a label which he founded in 1993 which was a major force in the Nuskool Breaks scene. Rennie now concentrates more on his talented art projects but recently released some new music created during the co-vid lockdown.

Supafunk, and others, Country Cockney is still relentlessly wowing the masses with his jaw-dropping blend of musical mastery and funny faces. With a belief that 'if it's good, it gets played' regardless of age, genre or cheese-factor, you can always guarantee that no matter where or when this DJ gets on the decks he'll always ensure that he finishes with a satisfied dance floor and a phat set of anthems ringing in the ears. You can catch him DJing live at Full Flava Behaviour @ The Chambers in Folkestone every few months and also on Cutters Choice Radio where he is live from 7pm every 2nd Friday and 2pm every Sunday playing the latest and greatest breakbeat music.
