Kevin Gordon‘s latest album, Long Gone Time, continues his thoughtful, critical examination of reconciling your love for family with deeply held incompatible beliefs. Country Fried Rock previously featured Gordon following his album, Gloryland. Gordon again recorded with his friend and frequent guitar player, Joe V. Allen Thompson Band‘s new album, Brace Yourself, is still kept under top-secret guard, but the stories leading to the title seem surreal. Thompson and band mate, Clint Maine, both broke their backs in separate accidents within a month of each other. The following year helped them expand their sound and get weirder, as they describe. Thompson called on a slew of music friends to contribute to the record, including the first single, a duet with Elizabeth Cook, “Long Time Thinkin’,” out now.

In the Fall of 1989, I moved to Athens. John, my cousin convinced me to be his roommate in Creswell Hall on the UGA campus. John was best friends with Maureen who would very quickly become my girlfriend. Conveniently, she lived directly above me on the 4th floor. Her best friend and roommate was Debbie. And Debbie's boyfriend was Noel. We quickly formed a little music going posse. We saw an early performance by an Atlanta band called An Evening With The Garbagemen at the 40 Watt that Fall. We instantly fell in love with the group. Very soon after that show, the band added a bass player and changed their name to The Jody Grind. For the next couple of years, we went to every Jody Grind show we could. Most of these shows were with their friends the Opal Foxx Quartet and Deacon Lunchbox. I taped a few of these shows. You'll hear occasional chatter from us on this one. You'll also hear Noel's trademark, "Whoo!" Noel went on to become a notable music and movie critic. I have him to thank for introducing me to a ton of great bands.

Presented here is a show from February 3rd, 1990 at the recently reopened Georgia Theatre in Athens. They were opening for the Seven Simons that night. Later that week, they played a show at the Downstairs Cafe in Athens. I have that one recorded as well and hope to post it soon.

I don't want to go too much into it because it hurts too much, but tragedy befell the group in April of 1992. On the way back from a gig in Pensacola, the equipment van carrying Robert Hayes, Deacon Lunchbox and new drummer Robert Clayton was hit head on by a driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel. All three were killed. Kelly Hogan and Bill Taft had driven separately and were unaware of the tragedy until later that next morning. It still hits me as hard as the day I heard of the accident.

The Jody Grind were a fucking, great live band. They were always trying to stretch and reinvent the songs. I miss them greatly!

Andrea Juarez never planned to release an album, but it seemed like the best way to honor her fiance, Chris Porter, who passed away on tour October 2016, when their van was rear-ended on the interstate. Mitchell Vandenburg also was killed, and Adam Nurre miraculously survived the horrific wreck. Porter was mostly finished with tracking his album, Don’t Go Baby It’s Gonna Get Weird Without You, which he had recorded in marathon sessions with Will Johnson (Centro-Matic) producing, and Shonna Tucker (Pegi Young, Drive By Truckers) and John Calvin Abney (Solo, John Moreland) with whom he had toured. Bonnie Whitmore hosted a memorial concert to raise the rest of the funds to finish the record, which will be released on the anniversary.
