Kohei Matsunaga aka NHK yx Koyxen follows up an impressive slew of releases for labels such as DFA and L.I.E.S. Records with a new full-length album for Hypercolour. ‘Climb Downhill 1’ is a dazzling collection of trippy post rave electro and wonky techno, pushing the sonics to breaking point in a contemporary stye.

Matsunga has previously deployed his brand of psychedelic bleeps and beats on albums for the likes of DFA Records (the legendary electronic label founded by James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem, Tim Goldsworthy, and Jonathan Galkin) as well as on London-based imprint Diagonal, run by Powell & Jamie Williams, and for Bruk Records.

Exciting news on the horizon: There's a new EP from el Duro Durán. Pa' Bailar is the new work of the Colombian-Swiss artist, in which he collaborates with his old talented pana, Parco Palaz. We have three tracks to get lost in the depths and eroticism that a dark, sweaty and hot dancefloor can present. After a long time, Luca once again dabbles in fast tempos that intertwine nostalgia and incisive percussive programming, whilst also slower, more sexy bends, as on "Ojos Cerrados".

And right there, in that track, is where the remixes stay. Perko makes a special intersection that Ricardistas and Basic Chanel fans will enjoy very much. Last but not least, one of London's prodigal sons, Laksa, makes a fabulous decision: 143 bpm half tempo | half guaracha.

The release in 1995 of wipE'out'', a lightning-fast, razor-sharp, futuristic racing game that helped to launch the PlayStation in Europe and North America, changed video games industry. Equally striking was the game’s original music, which came from Welsh musician Tim Wright, aka CoLD SToRAGE, mixing the accelerated beats of drum & bass with the pure synth rush of trance to make music that sounded as breathlessly exciting as playing the game felt.

The second instalment of the advanced singles from wipE'out'' - The Zero Gravity Soundtrack comes in the form of a 4-track package containing two original songs by CoLD SToRAGE –the iconic 'Canada' and the trance based 'Trancevaal'– plus two additional remixes by the French producer @simocell and the British IDM master @jamesshinra.

General Blurb:

Back in the 1990s video games were still largely seen as nerdy: fun, sure, but basically a guilty pleasure that you’d soon grow out of. The release in 1995 of wipE'out'', a lightning-fast, razor-sharp, futuristic racing game that helped to launch the PlayStation in Europe and North America, changed all that. This was a game that looked and sounded both adult and cool, the kind of game you would put on display in your living room, rather than hide away under your bed. Key to this was the fact that wipE'out'' borrowed unashamedly from the clubbing experience and electronic music, in a way that put it at the heart of progressive mid 90s culture. It soon became a phenomenon.

wipE'out'' looked sensational, with Sheffield agency The Designers Republic - known for their work with Warp - creating the visuals, packaging and manual for the game, drawing heavily on the bright colours and excitable geometric shapes of the rave and club flyers of the early 90s.

wipE'out'' also sounded like a new rave dream. The European version of the game included music from The Chemical Brothers, Leftfield and Orbital, the kind of fashionable game syncs that were almost unheard of at the time. Equally striking was the game’s original music, which came from Welsh musician Tim Wright, aka @coldstorage, by this point already a veteran in the video games world, having worked on the music for Amiga titles such as Lemmings and Shadow of the Beast 2. His music for wipE'out'' was, if anything, even more extreme than the big-name syncs, mixing the accelerated beats of drum & bass with the pure synth rush of trance to make music that sounded as breathlessly exciting as playing the game felt.

These tracks were burned into the brains of millions of gamers; the soundtrack to a generation of late-night anti-gravity racing, as the sun gingerly rose beyond the curtains. But they haven’t, perhaps, quite got the respect they deserve, something that this release will address. In 2023, video game music is finally getting its dues; here, remastered and repackaged –and also remixed by cutting edge producers such as Kode9, μ-Ziq, Brainwaltzera, Simo Cell, Wordcolour, James Shinra, Surgeons Girl and Dattassette– are some of the most important, thrilling, innovative and most fun songs ever committed to game release.

Her music made its way through various platforms and labels, from Pino Peña’s W133 to Kangding Ray’s ARA and has always had a special place in our ears. Prieste5s’s workflow and research for organic sounds, paired with the minimalism of her production, brings a new depth and drive to her music. From Willow to 10,000 Lux she depicts a powerful landscape full of percs and toms that will get to your mind and feet.

Through Enchantress Prieste5s showcases her love for bass, percussion and hypnotic sounds, building a deep atmosphere and minimalist groove throughout the four tracks.

« Thematically, I take a lot of influences from the natural world, geology, and spirituality. Having studied evolutionary biology previously, I have a fascination for all things relating to natural-history. And as a somewhat spiritual person, I also enjoy exploring through my music the idea of one’s personal connection to the earth. I really like to play with the juxtaposition of technology and nature, both in the process as well as the materials I use. For me, it’s a way of showing that we should still seek harmony with nature even amid the chaos of the modern world. I feel like a big theme in my music is the ephemerality of the natural world and how we as participants of that experience can find ways to connect in a magical, childlike sort of way. »

Los Angeles-based DJ and artist BAE BAE brings us her debut EP Spiral, a sentimental exploration of the intersection between club music and R&B. Fusing elements from Miami Bass, jungle, and various flavors of House, she creates lavish compositions centered around the human voice, working with seductively chopped up samples as well as original guest vocalists AKUA and Asphodèle. Made as a means for her to deal with the current absence of nightlife, these six tracks were designed to help channel the physical spaces we all long to dance in during these strange and isolating times of social distancing.
