Nathan Germain aka Sprælle ([Sprah-lé], he/him) is a 24-yo French musician, producer, and DJ based between Montreal, Canada, and NY City, US. His work collects stimuli from multiple musical and cultural references such as contemporary laptop electronics, ambient and experimental music, as well as mainstream pop and videogame soundtracks. These, in particular, had a role in inspiring his debut EP called CRUSH UP, appeared early last year on the Spanish label xenonyms, which enacted a lively confrontation between lo-fi components and sharp sonic bursts on the foreground of energetic and eventful progressions.

Other than releasing several single tracks from 2019 onward, Sprælle already appeared twice on the Montreal-based platform Audio Bambino, with the tracks Aïsha and Gravel on this 2nd and 7th compilations respectively. Also, the artist hosts monthly residencies on Montreal’s N10.AS and Tunis’ Ma3azef radios, called Bleed In The Underground and Rearranged Existence. On this occasion, we're happy to present you with a one-track single written and produced by Sprælle, a 20-minutes mammoth composition called Ropes To Eternity Lead Nowhere which has been reportedly designed to take the listener through multifaceted sceneries of abstract realities.

Engaging on the challenge of blurring the boundaries between genres via different compositional solutions and production techniques such as time-stretching, field recording manipulation, and digital saturation, just to name a few, Ropes To Eternity Lead Nowhere is a challenging, free-form yet well-conducted journey into Sprælle’s take on electronic music, delicate and impassioned at the same time. In the track, a mutable collage of sound and rhythmical components is patched together around a central theme of wonder and discovery, which is declined in distensive moments of relaxation, tense passages of agitation, and abrasive, emotional junctures. All the drives behind Sprælle’s creation process converge into an organic tale of an ever-changing life creature arising from a pond of scattered materials and manifesting itself in its diverse, unseizable shapes, until the final abrupt conclusion. The latest house duo to emerge from the Parisian underground bid us bonjour with this stellar debut on Dialect, fusing retroist 80s leanings with brain mulching techno voodoo. Title track ‘Scandale’ and ‘Lame De Fond’ share the same pulsing sequenced heart, transplanted from Carpenter soundtracks and Italo disco classics and then zapped with a thousand volts of warped, detuned and malfunctioning synthesizer electricity. ‘El Topo’ replaces the bristling sequences with a spiky post punk snarl courtesy of live guitars, bass and organ (a la Suicide no less) but retains the twisted electronics for a woozy half time experiment in dancefloor psychedelia. Essential for fans of Joakim, Ivan Smagghe and early Gesaffelstein productions.

In a time when Jazz music is entering a contemporary renaissance and exciting the ears and minds of new audiences, Zombie Zombie's Étienne Jaumet offers us his unique, idiosyncratic take on the sound with the sprawling “8 Regards Obliques”, his 3rd solo album with the Versatile label.

Jazz requires a certain freedom of technique, interpretation and improvisation that already matches Jaumet’s own production style and sonic aesthetic as well as his playful approach towards music.
The eight pieces that make up the new LP were very quickly recorded; Jaumet let himself be carried away by the atmosphere without focusing too much on fine details or the laborious aspects of the composition process.

The finished article is a spontaneous collection that stands out, a true mirror image of the creative process adopted by the artist. Not surprisingly, spontaneity is one of the characteristics already present in his music, in both his recorded output and his live happenings, where he leaves much room for freedom and improvisation.

“8 Regards Obliques” was recorded at the Versatile studio in less than 3 weeks with quite a basic set up: TR 808, selected synthesizers, vocals and of course the saxophone, which is a constant presence also in his previous albums.
For the mix Etienne has again appealed to the maestro I:Cube, a central figure of the Versatile story and a prodigious engineer and artist in his own right. He immediately understood that it was necessary to keep the spontaneous side alive and to not over-produce the pieces or over-edit them, being constantly mindful to retain the power in the sound and in the frequencies.

From Sun Ra with “Nuclear war”, Miles Davis in “Shhh / Peaceful” or “Theme from a symphony” by Ornette Coleman to “Caravan” (already quoted by many jazzmen), Etienne enjoyed revisiting classic masterpieces and paying tribute to his inspirations. He allowed himself only one personal and original composition, “Ma révélation mystique”.
