As we begin to notice those first flickers of Fall, it beckons a new phase of reflection. A meditation on the power of silence. Those spaces between the notes which can often be more important than the notes themselves. Our next guest understands this power well and has utilized it throughout his almost 30-year career to astonishing effect. 

Rolando, at this point, should need little introduction. A former member of Underground Resistance, he has since gone on to start his own R3 imprint and hold residencies at both Berghain and Rex Club in Paris. His music has deep roots in Detroit where he grew up, permeating through his lifeblood as an artist. Normally known for his inclination towards building and maintaining an infectious groove, he uses that same skill here but without the pummeling presence of the kick drum. Rather, he guides us along with percussive pads and ethereal musings in this special 2-hour edition of UNRUSH.

Best Known for their textured, hypnotic, deep techno sounds, with continues releases on Hypnus Records, they have developed a unique, quintessential sound that captured our attention. Their productions only offer the transcendent escapism we long for in music.

GET TO KNOW PRIMAL CODE ...

1) How and why did you get into producing / dj'ing?

- We produce and dj'ing because we really enjoy the vibe that music can gives to us, and the good feeling of sharing something intimate with other people. We also make music to create our own imaginary worlds and atmospheres, to escape a bit with the mind from this Earth.

2)  What/where was your most coziest gig you've been to or experienced and why?

-We remember with joy and a big smile our first gig ever in Prague. We had a great time with all Harmony Records Crew, spending time all together with artists such as Alan Backdrop, Enrico (a_000), and Hydrangea. We were pleasantly surprised when we saw all those people coming to hear us, even some from different countries, just for us. It was fantastic and filled us with joy and gave us more energy.

3) Are you an introvert or extrovert in the industry?

It depends, we both have different personalities. Gabriele is more introverted and more private but equally social when it takes time to be. In the same way, Davide is not very social, but we both really like to get in touch with other artists of the scene to share moments and ideas together.

4) If you had to choose 1 track to vibe out too forever what would it be?

5) What is your routine when preparing for a gig / production/writing session? do you have any special remedies/ mental prep/ places to go to? :)

It depends on the time or the period. Sometimes we like to have a break in nature, have a walk, or a dinner with friends. Music is also communication, so to be with friends and people you love is important. Of course, having our private time is important too, especially to connect with your personality and with it, create something that can express yourself at your best.

@kimkenis is the next artist to feature on the Above Below mix series. Hailing from Belgium, Kim has made appearances at festivals across Europe including Waking Life and Doel. It is our pleasure to welcome her to the Above Below family. 

The mix fuses numerous styles including Dub, Dub Techno, Deep Techno and House, exploring the intricate areas that these genres can venture to. Percussive, melodic and atmospheric elements flow throughout. Kim's seamless DJ style, combines these components with ease. 

The tone has been set and we look forward to hearing more this June.

— Artist Intro —

F-on (Alfonso Pomeda) is the owner of Alpenglühen (the label) focused in deep and ambient techno which explores the thin line between light and darkness.

His progressive sessions, profound and with long mixes, are real voyages that sail through experimental music, ambient and horizontal and dubby techno.

F-on's productions are 4x4 experiments of low tempo with field recordings and marked spaces, where he explores timbres, textures and cinematographic structures. He is a resident at the Alpenglühen and Taiga sessions and owner of the label Antimatter together with Bule.

Belle confusion: F-ON

This weeks mix comes from Berlin based producer, dj and jazz pianist YYARD (@yyard_music). We first stumbled upon YYARD’s producti ons through his beautiful release ‘Immanence’ on the @qeone.rec compilation LANDSCAPES . JUNGLE . shimmer.

“This vinyl mix came about very naturally. It’s a fusion of playful UK-oriented rhythms and fluffy breakbeat and techno moments, combining different grooves that I feel at home with. It always matters to me to let the music sound warm and maintain a certain easiness when i’m playing. So i guess that’s what it is about. Enjoy!”

We met Volen through a tip from our friends at Cyclone as a Los Angeles-based DJ who was also a natural with production. In 2021 we released Volen's Distortion mini-album on Rhizome Forms. Those heady productions stuck with us and we knew a vinyl would soon be ready. Four years later, with countless hours spent in his Arizona desert sound lab, we present four acidic dancefloor interventions on wax.

“Validation” is immediately lively with a cascading acid groove. Spinning through inversions, the vocal refrains frame the kaleidoscopic dance floor energy of the title track.

The record's a-side finds completeness with the twisted anthem “I've Got to Shower".
Wobbly chords simmer under that famous sample while a slick breakbeat delivers the rhythm.

Side-b arrives with swagger as "Left & Right” rolls in with a mental acid and breakbeat powerplant of a groove.The track's breakdown billows atmosphere while the lower frequencies growl.

Volen saves the starry ecstasy for the final track. “Pump Their Dump” is an upbeat and dreamy acid house journey evolving into a collage of ear candy samples that'll satisfy dancers looking for that positive vibration release.
