Breaching is one of the most spectacular things you can see while on a whale watch. Whale watchers and scientists alike have often wondered why whales sometimes engage in this most impressive and acrobatic of all whale behaviors. In this spectacular display of athletic prowess, the whale will dive beneath the surface for a few seconds or minutes only to surface vertically with great speed. Often the animal will twist while in mid-air and then come crashing down with thunderous splash.  While all whales have the ability to breach, none do it as often as the Humpback Whale.  But why do they breach?  Some of the main theories are as follows.  Removal of parasites: whales breach to help rid themselves of parasites.  Humpback Whales especially, sometimes carry a variety of external (as well as internal) parasites that may cause itching and irritation to their sensitive skin.  Aid of digestion: whales may breach to help move food along in their digestive tract, a whale might consume over 1 ton of fish every day!  Just of fun: Certainly in the case of young calves breaching could very often just be for fun! Young whales, just like the young of any mammal, do have a keen sense of play which is actually quite important for exercising growing bones and muscles, as well as building body awareness and coordination. Communication: perhaps the most widely accepted theory of whale surface activity, however, is that it is  a non-vocal form of communication among each other.

For violin, piccolo, bamboo flute, oboe d'Amore, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, french horn, tuba harp, whales, dolphins, seagulls, fish, and crustacean recordings, virtual instruments and percussion.

can’t say goodbye, just good riddance to this year and glad for the departure. no fond farewell, au revoir, wiedersehen or さようなら to 2020. in the words of Ray Charles, just hit the road and don’t you come back no more, no more.

in spite of quarantine lockdowns and turmoil i’m grateful to have had the inspiring music of so many wonderful soundcloud musicians who kept on playing and creating music throughout a difficult year. special thanks to hitoshi yasui of chairhouse for his daily musical gems and for allowing us to create our versions of his beautiful piano music. looking forward to a better 2021 and wishing everyone a happy, healthy, peaceful and musical new year. play on friends.

Can't Say Goodbye

When I write music, I try to go on a journey to feel emotions, whatever they may be.  To me, music is a celebration of life; for all the pain and suffering we may endure, it is a gift to be alive. 

I hope music can take you on journeys of your own to places where you may want to be.  Thank you for listening.
